I think I just pieced together on why I'm vibing with playing this at launch so much. It's a bit of a stretch, certainly some of you will overlap here so you can tell me if I'm full of poo poo or not.

Playing this game at launch, reading all of people's messages, seeing their White Phantoms, bloodstains, reading posts here, wandering around this giant foreign land filled with secrets, new gear, abilities and excitement...It's recaptured that feeling of playing a brand new WoW expansion during its peak 2007-2011.

I played a lot of WoW during its first two expansions and this feeling I'm getting playing this feels so much like venturing out with everyone during The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King it's crazy. I love it. And I don't have to wait for quest mobs to respawn.

The thing that allowed me to get him is jumping. He staggers easy and jump attacks seem to avoid his attacks more than being on the ground.

Hey help me out!?

I'm playing Elden Ring and I like it just okay.

Seems like Dark Souls 4 but instead of having a cool creatively interwoven world that does fun little moebius things on itsself

It's big and wide open and you have a horse.

Sorry if that's reductionist and dismissive. I really do like it!

Anyway my approach has been to avoid reading anything at all to help me with this game. No googling anything. No walkthroughs. I don't want to know where the cool great items are hidden or where you can hop on your horse and sprint into an area way above your level and grab that one magical sword that will make the first half of the game a total cakewalk. I've made that mistake before.

That said: I've explored much of the map such as it exists to me thus far and am not sure what to do next? There are multiple bosses I've encountered but they all seem to be out of my league (I'm level 21 now). I'd also like to get some magic going but there appears to be no way yet to be able to have a weapon capable of casting (I started a dex build but have been leveling vitality and now faith, mostly).

Should I cave-in and look at some tips and walkthroughs? Keep grinding? I hate grinding and do not want to spam trashmobs to reach level 25 or 30 so I can beat the next boss and progress.

It's so weird I'll kill a special or tough enemy and they're like CONGRATS here is a smithing stone! or a dagger! or some more (effectively) worthless crafting junk! Am I wrong to be expecting not-garbage loot in this massive world? Even when I go out of my way to find a clearly secret area and I find a cool hidden thing I get nothing of value.

Also wild to tout BIG OPEN WORLD OH EM GEE! When there's a bonfire every 10feet and you can warp at any place and any time.

I guess it's a matter of taste. I started trying to go totally blind and I was having some fun but it seems that I'm terrible at finding stuff, co's the world felt super empty and a little dull.
Once I let it go and looked at some stuff online I'm having a blast doing loads of cool stuff in those same areas where I just passed by without finding anything.

Yeah I've been using it for quite a while and I believe so. Technically your spells/incantations scale off your casting tool, which then scales off your stats-- keep in mind though that this is a split between both stats and it's very likely that to compensate, it's not as powerful as other casting implements. That said, it rules for a hybrid.

I've been using it along with the talisman that boosts roar/breath skills and basically Fus-Roh-Daing guys off of cliffs everywhere, it's pretty loving sweet

edit: same guy that gives you that also gives you an HP regen incantation that I like more than the normal one, it's really FP efficient, but it only works on you and not on allies

Unless someone knows for sure it's different it's probably the DS3/DS1R system of matchmaking based off level and maximum weapon ascension your character has ever had in their inventory. You might have also forgotten to reset a multiplayer password if you set one.

I got this because a friend told me it it was a great early game weapon but its awful. Its both slow and has a very small attack area when it's poking as designed, it doesn't even feel like the range is all that great. Using +4 katana now and everything feels so much less clumsy and awkward. I think I might ditch the shield tho, at least against bosses since their attacks usually go right through or at least stagger you for a follow up deathstrike. Have had way more success evading damage by just dodging every which way.

Anyway just beat Margit and it only took me a couple tries. :toot:

Unironically stay close to him. His swings are super telegraphed and he never attacks more than 3 times. Punish his openings, especially after his big overhead swings or his jump. He's also vulnerable to bleed.

I use Nightrider flail as my backup for my axe or when I wanna mix things up, but I've never gotten the hang of using the swing stuff for lots of chain hits and my axe does a better job staggering enemies when it hirts, they tend to shrug off the nightrider swings. It's also kind of wimp looking, fails don't look cool until they get absurdly large with the spiky smashy bit. Probably one of the dumbest weapons ever invented next to nunchucks. Obviously any weapon can hurt the user but flails and nunchucks seem like they're more effective hurting the user than anyone else.

I got my dex to 30 thinking I might eventually find something that needed it like the big stat weapons I have for everything else. Might be a mistake though, I'm playing 90% of the time just two-handing my one-handed axe and frost-stomping. I should probably pump more points into mana and hp, not sure what all this dex is even doing for me at this point. The axe has C scaling on dex and d on strength. Lame but haven't seen anything higher than C scaling yet.

I should find the respec NPC because I'm wanting to try this idea of a faith/punch monk since I have that sweet holy hand weapon I can't use. The double weapon lifestyle also seems like it might be fun, it's weird, I don't actually block two-handing much, one-handed axe obviously lovely blocker anyway, except maybe rounding corners in case of ambush. Still, seems a little scary to have that second weapon and I'm not sure when you'd actually use it, or if it would ever do more damage anyway? Generally the amount of damage I do in a combo is limited by how long the boss let's me wail on them. In cases where I'm stamina-blocked, not sure having two weapons swinging would matter. In cases where I'm rolling around to dodge after just a few good whacks, is just the advantage double-stamina for double-swinging? Do you ever get simultaneously swings though?

Scaling goes up as you level the weapon up.

Dual wielding is great for status effects and catching rolling enemies.

all the myriad reports rolling in how sorcery falls off in the midgame is actually psyching me up because it means that instead of choosing easy mode i have chosen hard mode and i'm gonna flip everyone the bird when i beat the game anyway

not that i'm sure how much i believe them in the first place. there seems to be this harmful preconceived notion going around of a "pure mage" build being something that uses exclusively spells to deal with everything and never deigns to touch a melee weapon or shield, because somehow that would make you a "spellblade" or something. that poo poo hasn't flown since like dark souls 1 when you could stack up 800 flavors of soul arrow (i.e. glintstone pebble) and 30 different magic damage buffs. even an arcane build in bloodborne (perhaps the most powerful version of magic since ds1 because it never hits a softcap with the arcane stat) has to slot a int-scaling gem and go hog wild smashing beasts with a big loving saw.

Good luck, magic buddy! I'm having a pretty good time as a snobby magical specialist, but I have not hit castle Stormveil yet. Meeko had a pretty good post about the keys to being an effective mage using the big spells, but I'll add that it's pretty important to get your flask upgrades. As a mage, I usually only keep 2 red flasks and dump all the rest into blue so I have the reserves to make it through dungeons as they start to get longer further into the game. You can get away with 2 blue flasks in early side dungeons that let you open a shortcut to the boss, but that gets less true later on.

Also a physical damage spell is really important for when you face enemies resistant to regular magic damage.

Meeko posted:

You're pretty much just intended to use Spirit Ashes if you want to use the longer, more elaborate spells, as far as I can tell. The cost for using summons is already reduced if you're a caster (you should be building more max FP as a caster to begin with & it frees you up to allocate more flasks to FP), and they do a good job of distracting bosses so you can, well, take advantage of the fact you're ranged. That's why you don't get poise, and why the FP costs are so high and force you into allocating more FP flasks - that's the price you're paying for being allowed to sit back and do your thing, and your goal is thus to let your meat shields take aggro any time the heat gets on you so you can find another casting chance. It's not entirely risk free, either, as bosses have numerous ways to dash or ranged attack you specifically to still keep things interesting for this style of play.

They recognized you can't really be a big cool windup caster mage versus the boss and mosh pit room designs they have in the game, and so they gave you a free (outside of the FP cost) way of summoning meat shields so you can do your caster thing. And if you don't want to do that, or you're in a area where you can't? That's what the cheaper, faster, more economical spells and arts are for - with the later getting away with it since you have to, well again, be in melee range for them.

This game is awesome and I spend way too much time thoroughly combing areas for random bullshit, especially after finding out a random aristocrat enemy north of the bridge of sacrifice turns into a runebear after you kill him.

I really love how the bigger strength weapons just send things flying if you hit them hard enough. There will certainly be better weapons than the brick on a stick, but it will hold a special place in my heart for telling nearly every enemy in Limgrave to gently caress off with their fancy nonsense.
