Emuelec is like 351elec for Android TV boxes. Some of them are very good, notably ones featuring the Amlogic S905x3 chipset with 4gb of RAM, which can usually be found for $50. It can emulate N64 down. A popular model is the HK1 Box, lovingly nicknameed the Make Up Box, or MUB for short.

The Beelink GT King is the best of these Android TV boxes, which can do Saturn and Dreamcast and some other poo poo like that. Maybe GameCube, too? idk. Those cost about $120.

A 2TB USB 3.0 external hard drive costs about $60. You can run emuelec and store your roms on that.

If you want to emulate on a TV with a controller, this is a great and cost-effective way to do that. It's a lot of fun playing MAME with four players!

They are not, but they operate very similarly. The next gen handhelds aren't doing much for me, tbh.

Ah, thanks for explaining. I lurk a bit ITT and I don't think I had seen any of those names so far. A cheap way to set up a four player MAME is actually something I hadn't even contemplated but now I'll have to do it, just in case I ever have enough visitors who are into gaming.

I don't think Dolphin even works on it and Gamecube needs a lot of GPU power it probably doesn't have

Yeah think of it like those "set up retropie on a raspberry pi" kits but instead you're setting it up on a cheap existing android tv box that's made to run Kodi and such. They may not have bluetooth (or it may be bad) but if you've got a bunch of wired or usb dongle controllers and an extra microsd card already then this is the cheapest way to make your own TV box, especially since raspberry pi prices have gone up and the units are rare.

EDIT: Warning, this might have a couple kinks. I tested some SNES games and the compatibility is worse, like Soulblazer doesn't have sound and Secret of Mana's all messed up. I think they borked the default SNES core.

Hit up your local thrift stores for Xbox 360 controllers and order one of the generic Xbox 360 USB receivers.
Works great, costs little.

It looks like some people have done this before (and people have been building lego raspberry pi nes-like cases forever) so it should be doable, the usb ports might be challenging, but with enough time and glue it should be possible

yep 351Elec is great. reminder that you can modify retroarch's per-console and per-game settings directly through the 351Elec frontend and avoid messing with RA's horrible ui almost entirely. also suggest memorizing the hot keys for save states (select + L for load, R for save) and fast forward (select + R2)

The real solution is to have two microsd cards and/or hard drive backups. ArkOS is no slouch, and you can freely switch between both on a whim.

my retroid pocket 2 got stolen.

1. does anyone need a free pcb upgrade kit? i have one but never got around to installing it
2. i’m mostly irritated at the amount of time i spent setting it up (and the fact that they also took my sd card with all the legally acquired backups of games i had on it, which was even more time, along with the sd card reader). i think i’m probably done with retro handheld gaming.

This got me thinking - if you only have a Retroid Pocket 2+ upgrade kit, is it possible to simply put the 2+ PCB inside the upgrade kit clear acrylic case and use it like one would any other Android TV box? Probably not ideal, given the forced 4:3 HDMI output, but just a thought.

Otherwise used RP2s are about 60-70 on eBay so it's not a complete loss.

The purchase page and some of the assembly guides posted have said you need a valid display out going on with the PCB for the HDMI out to work, so you can't use the kit by itself, you'd have to buy a screen upgrade as well or have an existing screen to plug into that ribbon port.

Well my 351p on Aliexpress didn't happen, I didn't pay attention to the sellers rating being so low and new. They never shipped anything but I got a full refund. I went to the official powkiddy site and ordered a Rgb10 max 2 instead. Stacked shoulder buttons are just natural.

As a general rule, if you can use standalone emulators on a device you should, they're going to be more current and more capable than whatever out of date version is currently in Retroarch.

Taki Udon finally does the input lag test we've all been waiting for

Well not quite, a real apples to apples comparison on a device that can run both EmuElec and Android, such as a TV box or an RG552. Still props for going through the trouble to wire up a LED light. And this does show that as long as the hardware isn't underpowered the lag should be the same regardless of OS, and that it is roughly twice (two frames) worse than real GBA hardware, which is about what people expect from emulation. A couple frames of runahead should even that out.
