Feliday Melody posted:Also, Isn't the EU a financial cooperation? Even if Ukraine joined, that wouldn't mean military support. At best, sanctions and financial support. Yes, it's a trade bloc, but it also has a Common Security and Defence Policy which does allow collective self-defence. The EU also gives out grants and invests in underprivileged areas. This isn't purely generosity. If you're going to allow freedom of movement, then the EU wants ensure that there isn't a huge disparity in quality of life to prevent a huge exodus from the new member. If you're selling EU membership as a way to encourage businesses and jobs to the new country, then you're going to have to make it attractive to those businesses. This is why the EU funds projects for culture and infrastructure in member states. The second that Ukraine gets membership of the EU, it becomes eligible for all this support, and that means millions and millions for post-conflict rebuilding.

Today I was at a local nonprofit organizing some temporary housing and other support for refugees. I've no idea if anything of what you all have contributed made or will make it it to them but I'm sure it's enabeling other ngos just like this to provide the much needed services! Loading and unloading vans of supplies https://i.imgur.com/VQCMPb3.mp4 Propaganda cupcakes. We weren't allowed to actually eat them The housing is all dorm-style which I assume is only good for shorter stays, but there were tons of people cleaning everythign up to ensure it's fairly nice there I haven't been downtown since the whole thing popped off, there's massive signs of support and protests everywhere. If only that did anything against tanks Lady Demelza posted:The second that Ukraine gets membership of the EU, it becomes eligible for all this support, and that means millions and millions for post-conflict rebuilding.

The Putin invasion of Ukraine is the most insane thing in my entire lifetime. I don't say that lightly. The runner-up is definitely the 2008 financial crisis. He sent kill teams into Kyiv to murder the top government of the 2nd largest country in Europe. He was totally delusional thinking this would work & Ukrainians would give in to a puppet regime and I find my brain justifiably obsessing that really happened, because it means the leader of a nuclear-armed great power is actually irrational. I always used to think the Putinist propaganda he spouted was for domestic consumption and he didn't buy into it, that his evil was more rational and calculating. But it's clear he does to a large extent or he never would've tried to invade this way. The commando kill teams thing is the most viscerally frightening to me, even more than all the bombs, because it's an insane epic level psychological terror. The first 24 hours, I was terrified they'd win and the Ukrainian people wouldn't really fight. I know, I know, there was always going to be resistance and an insurgency in theory. But I couldn't help but imagine the alternative, which would be like Hong Kong's slide but maybe even worse, with the Russian puppet regime *seeming* not TOO repressive for a few years, enough to get sanctions lifted, all meanwhile dark salami tactics ensue and they go after actual Neo-Nazis first, followed by hardcore nationalists, then after a while LGBTQ, eventually journalists & democracy activists. And within 15 years, Ukraine ends up more repressive than Belarus, a crushed black hole of a place where people have no future and almost everybody outside has given up. After that, probably annexation by Russia. This could still happen, but ironically, it'd be even more nakedly brutal now if the Russians win. Honestly in some way I like that more, because it will force the Russians to wear their *REAL* moral values on their sleeve, and Ukrainians won't have to suffer through the insane gaslighting bullshit period where the repression slowly ramps up while countries like Germany loving ignore it except for some slapdash sanctions and terse words. Now it will just be jackbooted fascist murder right from the start. It clarifies the stakes, and forces me to discard my previous deference to the German perspective that heavily arming Ukraine will embolden Ukrainian nationalists to escalate Donbass conflict. It was a reasonable concern, perhaps, but irrelevant now. Best case scenario is a repeat of the Winter war, where Ukraine gives up some small territory, after which the West needs to arm the hell out of them so even his delusional state Putin sees he can't try again. Hopefully the Russian army starts ignoring the insane orders like Saddam's army halting their advance in the Iran-Iraq war. I wonder if Putin might end up going full Saddam, executing generals left and right for failing him, if that kind of thing is possible in modern Russia. Also think most people have ignored the mental health impact of Putin doing the evil murderous dictator rigmarole for 24+ years. He has to worry about being killed too. That's a lot of accumulated stress. e; should've posted in the main Ukraine war thread. But I do plan to donate. Eregos fucked around with this message at 01:07 on Mar 2, 2022 |

Maybe this should be added to the OP: Meduza is an independent Russian news site based in Latvia. They're still operating, and tech-savvy Russians can still access them through various means, but they're now cut off from 90% of their funding, because Russians can no longer support them. https://meduza.io/en quote:There’s one challenge for which we are not prepared, however. Ninety percent of the donations we receive come through the payment systems Stripe and PayPal. Our readers in Russia want to keep supporting us, but now their bank cards are being rejected. Additionally, economic sanctions against Russia’s financial sector create serious risks for our crowdfunding, forcing us to prepare for the worst.

Please give me a gangtag please. I also went to one of my local Eastern European grocery stores, and they are run byu Ukranians. They are willing to take the financial hit by removing all of their Russian goods. In fact, they trashed a bunch of Russian wine and beer! Absolute badasses: https://www.seattletimes.com/busine...ampaign=RSS_all I gave to a Ukrainian Relief org. I also joined the Patreon of the Kyiv Independent, so I'll be donating to them monthly. (If you need to kill a tag, you can get rid of the 'Yes, I want coronavirus' one - I've had it, twice. Do not recommend.)
