I really like this scene. In another story Geoff, or Arf rather, is the protagonist and this is a very dramatic moment. But Arf isn't the protagonist, so he just looks ridiculous. I don't know if this is the right term, but he almost feels like a deconstruction of Prince Valiant (the character). He's honestly still a pretty impressive person, stealing the king's horses to run messages to and from a combat zone and all that, it's just in a way that's a bit more down to earth than the typical adventuring hero.

I also like Boltar's reaction. I don't think he's deliberately trying to save Arf from embarrassment. He's the kind of guy who just says whatever he really means or feels.

Boltar really appreciates the kid's honesty and emotion, and probably sees a lot of Val in him as well.

In my Junior and Senior years I never wrote a paper until the night before. I'd mentally outline it ahead of time, then wait until like 8 PM to go to the computer lab at the student union and crank the entire thing out in one sitting. (I found it useful to write on a public computer where I wasn't, say, logged in to The Something Awful Forums to keep myself focused.) Never received a mark below a B.
