Vintage Valiant (Jan. 15, 1950) I really like this scene. In another story Geoff, or Arf rather, is the protagonist and this is a very dramatic moment. But Arf isn't the protagonist, so he just looks ridiculous. I don't know if this is the right term, but he almost feels like a deconstruction of Prince Valiant (the character). He's honestly still a pretty impressive person, stealing the king's horses to run messages to and from a combat zone and all that, it's just in a way that's a bit more down to earth than the typical adventuring hero. I also like Boltar's reaction. I don't think he's deliberately trying to save Arf from embarrassment. He's the kind of guy who just says whatever he really means or feels.

Goddamn it I love Prince Val. The art, the faces, it really is a shame that poo poo like Peanuts and FOOB and Funky is all over the comics pages. Imagine Val with a full page.

Thank you to whoever pointed out the weird emphasis usage in Mary Worth a while back, I notice it all the time now and it's great. Even in a strip like this where the emphases are used in a pretty natural way, you still get fun stuff like HA!... BICYCLE!

A friend of mine used to mess with the smtp headers so that the timestamp on the message would always be exactly 11:59:59. Not to cheat, it was always actually sent with hours to spare. He just did it to mess with the instructors, to make them think he was doing what Jeremy's doing here, every single time, and never missing.

I'd mentally outline it ahead of time, then wait until like 8 PM to go to the computer lab at the student union and crank the entire thing out in one sitting. (I found it useful to write on a public computer where I wasn't, say, logged in to The Something Awful Forums to keep myself focused.) Never received a mark below a B.
