Canada's gun laws are very capital-L Liberal in that it's legal to buy an assault weapon, provided you buy it from a company that has jumped through the appropriate loopholes. Can't buy an AR-15, but you can buy a wk180-c that looks, works, and shoots the same as an AR-15.

We can either decide to ban semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines, or we can keep chasing the tail of outlawing whatever gun got used in the latest mass shooting. But I have a feeling that gun enthusiasts prefer the current state of affairs, silly as it is, over a ban on semi-auto rifles with detachable mags.

Yeah I'm going to miss all of this too. I hope not to wind up as a bouncer/host/bartender again, but when I was doing all of that last year I got real used to mouthing "gently caress you" over and over. That's gonna be a hard habit to break.

The worst part is that the war in Ukraine has affected global food prices, so now even more people in Yemen are going to starve to death because funding is drying up.

i'd say it's more that racism is a useful tool for capitalists. it's one of the things you can use to divide the working class into smaller, more manageable chunk, with an implicit hierarchy that makes the chunks that are higher on the pecking order do a lot of the work keeping down the people underneath them, which capitalists would have to do themselves with a unified working class

that a whole lot of capitalists are also racist shitheads certainly helps making this happen

Honestly I feel like the bridges would be far more pedestrian antagonistic then not for that reason.

bridges means people can shout at you for not using them

EvilJoven posted:

Well, there is one layer of truth to it - roads dedicated to cars and nothing else, and roads better designed around their speed, are both ways we could get greater pedestrian safety.

But that first one implies creating dedicated pedestrian/bike infrastructure to go with the dedicated car infrastructure. The second is more that if you want to slow people down, you need to do more then just put up speed limits.

Something I was thinking about the other day wrt media coverage is that this is the first time I can remember that the media are reporting on a war from the point of view of the victims and the invaded. Virtually every other war, we're on the side of the aggressor and our media coverage reflects it.

I enjoyed this comic as well! It's fairly US-centric but given our cultural overlap it's pretty much the same poo poo. The only misstep in the comic imo is that there aren't any open symbols of nazism (ie swastikas or SS bolts) held by the chuds, which was mostly accurate in 2019 but lol, not anymore.

It's the same problem I have to work through with the Ottawa convoy. It's good the police didn't horribly bludgeon those people who were mostly annoying but not violent (though there are those who were), I want that treatment for everyone. Yes, it's good that the coverage is sympathetic to Ukrainians who are being crushed by an aggressive neighbour, that coverage should be extended to every country enduring the same tragedy.

Ultimately hypocrisy is a rhetorical dead end when it comes to this stuff. I don't think about it too much otherwise I will go nuts.

recognizing hypocrisy is indispensable if youre going to bother consuming newsmedia at all since it helps you know who will just say anything so long as it promotes their preexisting position and who is bothering to try working from a place of principle. This helps you calibrate your bullshit detector and properly weigh the deluge of information youre exposed to.

I feel like very little genuine sympathy is actually being put out there for the actually existing Ukrainian people. I'm kinda reminded of Thomas King's distinction between "dead Indians" and "live Indians." Dead Indians, as a cultural type easily categorized for the benefit of the majority, are beloved while the actually existing human beings are either ignored or reviled. Right now there's a fondness for the idea of suffering Ukrainians, but little (institutionally) being done to help the actually existing people. And if the actually existing people were to make serious material demands, that love would evaporate quickly.

I mean, just look at how many people are fantasizing about idiotic war scenarios that would see countless actually existing Ukrainians killed. The sympathy is for the idea, not the actual people.
