On the bright side I was talking to a friend who is a nuclear physicist and he said this reactor is a PWR and basically based off of the stuff they use for submarines reactors and designed to take a beating.

This is where TV coverage of what's going on tends to differ than the more informed information posted in this thread. Anderson Cooper just said that they've been told if the reactor goes it will be ten times worse than Chernobyl.

I'm not one of those idiots who cries fake news at anything I don't agree with, but CNN and FOX have seemingly been telling a more dire story than the information posted here.

The Ukrainian PWRs also have better containment reactors than the ones deployed in Russia, partially for compliance with western nuclear reactor safety standards but also because they know very very well what happens when you don't give a poo poo about reactor safety.

Supposedly the russians are firing on the firemen. That's gotta suck for those guys. I mean they already know Russia don't give a gently caress about firemen at nuclear power plants.

I hope to hell they don't hit live fuel.

The oldest reactor came online at the end of 1985. The second to last one in 1989. VVER-1000 model. This same design is widely used in Russia, and also can be found in China. Only two reactors at the plant are noted as having had any significant upgrades or life extension done since then. I think the only thing worth noting is that they aren't the old RBMKs, but that's not saying much if the grid power is lost and some idiot blows up the backup generators:

It won't be 'like Chernobyl', but if they have a loss of coolant incident, it won't be good either. Three Mile Island's Unit 2 was also a PWR, but also that accident didn't occur during an active war, and nobody shelled the goddamn plant. The only thing we know for certain is that they've got six reactors there (each with something like 65 tons of low-enriched uranium fuel when loaded), and all the spent fuel facilities that go with that. It's not a good thing to shoot at. I stop taking reality seriously when someone starts shooting at something like that.

Equipment is a surface level change. The same pattern occurred during Chechnya and their other wars, poor performance, firings, change to address problems. These don't stick around because the system is rotten with corruption. Without enduring systemic change the same cycle will just continue. This is the system Putin and his cronies have built, they would struggle to maintain control with the kind of change required for a high quality, professional military.

Giving them intel from the RC-135s, Global Hawks, satellites, lethal aid, and :nsa: ain't nothing. If the Russians had even a fraction of the intel capacity we're "donating" to the Ukrainians this would be a MUCH different war.
