Well, of course I know him.
He's me.
It’s still a bit dark and glossy and I’m not crazy about the flight of stairs separating the conn from the captain’s chair, but as far as modern Trek bridges go it’s one of the better ones.

It’s too bad it looks like we’ll be back on La Sirena from now on.

I'm digging this new Robert Meyer Burnett. The Stupidest Man On The Internet (Star Trek Edition) encounters a legitimately good hour of Modern Star Trek, immediately shuts up and realizes he has been rendered inert.

I thought that's what that whole "That ship has sailed" line to Guinan was all about though? I have to go back and rewatch it because I didn't hear all of the conversation clearly but it seemed like they were very pointedly talking about Crusher and Picard flat out says he hosed that one up and Guinan was like "Oh did you? ...I'm not as sure about that one as you seem to be."

Prodigy has shown that Kurtzman and co still have Gates McFadden's phone number. I'm guessing if or when Crusher finally shows up on Picard it's going to be a Big Moment.

Yea, I totally see them hiding Crusher coming back as a big thing.

Oh poo poo, Picard looks like it might actually be good? That’s a pleasant surprise, hope it holds up. Fell more hopeful for it than I did at this point in season one as I recall.

I saw someone else mention missing some of the conversations on first viewing, though I can’t find it to quote it, but what’s up with that? I had the same experience and was a little worried early on in the episode that I might not be able to follow things.

If you want to sub for Picard, there's a promo right now.

With promo code BIRTHDAY, the ad-supported plan is only $1/month for your first three months.
With the same code, the ad-free plan is just $2/month for your first three months.

I believe it works for lapsed accounts too. not just new ones.

Seriously, 'young science officer' had a name that was said once and I can't remember it and had 10 seconds of screen time but still felt like more of a real person than any of the Discovery bridge crew have managed in 4 seasons.

Yeah, at this point, if Paramount wants to do, I dunno, a Stargazer spin off now that Picard's basically wrapped and in the can starring Rios, Jurati, and the bridge crew they had for 2x01, I'd be there for it.

I think the idea of all those blue plaques they're standing in front of is the ships in the Fleet Museum. The Stargazer plaque mentions it's in the museum and Voyager's on one of them too and the Prodigy showrunner mentioned that's where they've decided Voyager is by the time of Prodigy. That would give us a fate for the Excelsior too, then.

My only gripe with PIC 2x1 is How did Picard NOT realize they were the Borg when he heard the sound sample? It's literally exactly how they've sounded every time he could hear them in First Contact.

Alchenar
Apr 9, 2008

I liked and I think it's promising that the show understands that it doesn't need to spell everything out and can leave things to the imagination. Stuff like the Borg being scary when they show up but shattered as a galactic power - that fixes a setting problem that Voyager caused and there's an implication that between TNG era and Picard era it might have taken a pretty nasty war to get there (see all the young officers who wouldn't have been born before Wolf 359 having personal grudges against the borg), but it isn't said outright and it doesn't need to because it isn't important for the story. It's just a bit of background that's understood between the characters and makes the world feel like it has a real history.

Ironically, this is probably going to be the second time in 30 years that an ominous thing emerges from a hole in space right in front of Picard's face which proceeds to 1) kill him and 2) lock him into some kind of time loop.

The hologram fighting on La Sirena does beg the question, as always, why fighting ever happens in a holoemitter-equipped area when they can just use the holoemitters to whip away their weapons and instantly project restraints, but whatev, it's the same question as why they don't use transporters to help fight or Disco's programmable matter walls don't crush bad guys.

The fact they weren’t short-hop transporting in the latest Disco frustrated me. “We’re up against the clock so we need to find something quickly to help us communicate with 10-C, but also we’re gonna park really far away from things and then walk slowly around this mega structure.”
They mildly handwaved all this as the entire episode only taking 4 hours, but still.

Discovery - the writers need to learn some astronomy. A gas giant has no solid core, there would be nothing to build structures on. Also, why would you choose the dead planet over the Dyson rings around the nearest star? Surely the Dyson rings would give much more information on the species?

I gotta be that guy here. Gas giants can have a core, and indeed, it's currently believed that Jupiter has a solid core about 7-8x the mass of Earth. Saturn might not have a core.

There's room for a lot of strange things in this universe.

"Hi Everybody!"
Watched the first episode of the new season of Picard and... it's a mixed bag. A lot of the dialogue just felt like hamfisted exposition and catch-up directed square at the audience rather than natural dialogue, and some of it contradicted itself like Stargazer is a brand-new ship, first of its kind with the new Borg-developed enhancements... OH NO, now suddenly ALL the ships somehow have these enhancements too and the Queen is taking over them all! You'd think Starfleet would have developed network security since dealing with the Borg too but, oh well, all the ships must be in danger for Maximum Drama!.

It's definitely overall better than I thought it might go, but I'm still holding my breath to see how it plays out.

Ah, fair enough! It was my understanding that while gas giants had a core, it wasn’t actually a rocky solid, but liquid metals sloshing around.
