crossposting, because while it won't offer Steam keys, it's still relevant I think. the itch.io Ukraine Aid bundle closes submissions tomorrow, but it's already received a lot of notable submissions. this is not a complete list, it's just notable stuff that I saw as I went through each page of the submission thread. more newcomers than you might think! a couple of big ones too.

i'm primarily just listing stuff that i've either played or know of, and stuff that's on Steam. (the bundle will of course have a ton of tiny itch-only projects, notably a fair number of shmups)

Is it fine to start on DS3? DS 1 remastered still has frame drops and I heard DS 2 is bad or something (plus it looks ,well, like a ps3 game, which it is)

I really want to play ER but even after the "fix" yesterday I was dropping into the 30s fighting the Tree Sentinel.

DS3 is a fine starting point. There are some references and callbacks to the previous games, but it's not going to stop you from enjoying beating the poo poo out of monsters.

The speed of the game is a lot closer to ER than 1 or 2 as well.

That itch.io bundle sounds great. I would give special mention to “Bury Me, My Love”. I really would urge anyone who hasn’t played it yet to spend some time with that one.

Tell us more about it and why you like it, please. I gave it a glance and it's got mixed reviews on Steam (and not many, even). Screenshots were all a smartphone in frame? Not the best first impressions.

After 60 hours of ER I can confidently say that the area around Tree Sentinel is easily one the worst places when it comes to stutter. He is also completely optional and the reward is not that good for most players anyway, so I would strongly recommend moving on because the rest of the game is pretty smooth. I won't say I didn't get slowdowns but nowhere else did the stutter kill me in a middle of a big fight.

Sure. It portrayed the experience of just how terrible it must be to be fleeing a war. You are essentially helping your partner navigate her escape with an ongoing text message dialogue. The gameplay is basic, yes, but the artwork is beautiful and the overall mood really got me to consider the overall tragedy of war. Even if dialogue games aren’t typically your thing, I’d encourage you to try it.

The cable insulation on my ancient Xbox 360 controller is starting to fray and wires are poking out. Since Microsoft doesn't even seem to make wired Xbox controllers anymore, what's the go to PC gaming controller these days?

I use a PS4 controller with a USB. It may not be what you're looking for, but it works.

I think most people just grab whatever the new wireless xbox/PS controller is, depending on what they're used to. Many (most?) steam games assume that no controllers have ever existed outside of the xbox one, but fortunately all others will support PS and generic logitech gamepads perfectly.

Modern Xbox controllers will still operate in wired mode if you plug them in

If you really don't want to pay for wireless functionality you don't need, 8bitdo does a wired-only variant of their pro controller

I ended up buying an xbox one controller and a USB cable lol

I was using my ps4 dual shock before that, and it worked perfectly fine, the only thing I couldn't stand was games that didn't have the option to use playstation button prompts. They both have blue X buttons, but they are not in the same place and my feeble brain couldn't wrap itself around that

It's strange how many different outcomes they invented for this one mission on Noveria, when I feel like 95% of players bypassed all of that and just got Lok'Quin's access card.

It really comes across that Noveria was likely the first area made in the game and was probably their gameplay prototype to show investors.

When you factor in the mako bits, the big decisions, the multiple approaches, etc. the whole thing is very much a vertical slice of Mass Effect 1.

For anyone who has been interested in space mining simulator Delta V: Rings of Saturn, today the developer did this:

quote:

In a time of a global crisis, there are causes that need your contributions more than we do. Today I’m lifting all the restrictions of the demo version, making it essentially a full game. Instead of buying ΔV, spend your money on something important and help someone in need. You can get the full version of ΔV when we have peace again.

Sale is still coming, but please, use that money better.

If you, however, opt to buy the game at full price, it will be greatly appreciated, and all the extra funding goes towards developing it even more.

Remember to pick up our free DLC with supplementary material!

So basically the demo is the full game, at least for now. Also:

quote:

Our most iconic spaceship - the Rusatom-Antonoff K37-TNTRL - is a product of joint-venture between Ukrainian and Russian companies. It makes me uneasy in times like this, but I won’t be changing that. Peace will come, and in times of peace there will be rebuilding of the economy, and eventually new friendships and a new space program. I’m leaving that in as a symbol of hope.

There’s even that one section that feels like it’s about to be a stealth sequence except it always ends with Shepard awkwardly murdering those thieves in the office building no matter what.

It probably was, Noveria is the only location in the series where they tell you how many credits you'll get for a quest in the voice acting. Making Noveria's quests give gently caress all money.

"I'll give you 200 credits for this quest"
<renegade> "I deserve more than that!"
"Fine, I'll give you 250 credits"

Meanwhile you'll get more than that from killing a random goon early in the game and everything to do with credits scales up the higher level you get.

I use an 8BitDo Pro 2, and it's legit one of the best controllers I've ever had. It syncs in XInput, DInput (a few very old games still need a DInput controller, like Trails in the Sky), and Switch modes; it has rumble and gyro; and has programmable back buttons, turbo, macros, etc.

Dinput is mostly there for Android to be fair (Android can use xinput but using Dinput instead lets you have another device synced on the controller for xinput)

The cable of an xbox 360 controller is super easy to swap, and you can get a new one for a couple of bucks off of e.g. Aliexpress or Ebay. Just open up the controller, unplug the JST connector of the old cable, and plug in the new one. That said, there are better controllers out there, but a spare never hurts.

I fully consider the first ELEX to be on the level of something like Pathologic. The gameplay and story are just sort of acceptable, but sometimes I found myself wondering, "Is this what it's like to be addicted?" Not in the "this is so fun" way, but in the "I seriously cannot stop myself" way.

See, you can buy unlimited stat increase potions in ELEX. And you seriously need those potions to survive in a world where Runt Critters can take off half your health in a single fight. When I first found my drug dealer buddy, I blew all my cash and sold off all kinds of stuff just for that sweet, sweet +1 STR. I found myself obsessively picking up stray rolls of toilet paper to fund my Natural Elex habit. When the mayor asked me if my buddy was politically reliable, I said hell yeah. No way I was going to endanger my stat potion pipeline.

Well, stuff happened, and my buddy ended up face down in a ditch, and I genuinely felt grief (but I also looted his corpse for the ingredients to make one last potion). And since I had been hearing about some wretched hive of scum and villainy off in the desert somewhere, I immediately dropped everything to beeline there. Words cannot describe my relief when I saw that the chem trader had Natural Elex in stock.

I woke up one day to realize I had turned into a roided-out hobo with seven different kinds of incredibly lethal weaponry, and I haven't started up ELEX since. I can only hope ELEX II lives up to that kind of experience.
