This is actually a thing used to confuse intelligence agencies and has been known since WWII. In statistics it's called the German tank problem and picking random values from a set of a million numbers is one of the ways to prevent estimates of how many aircraft they actually have.

That stops working when you get daily flyovers of the tank and missile factories. You can only hide so much in sheds and warehouses without getting noticed.

I think reporters maybe got way to comfortable reporting wild weather by stepping into it, and reporting on combat while escorted by US marines, and are now making very bad decisions on where to report from.

I don't believe they were. It was a big deal when Trump (was it him?) dropped one in Afghanistan. I remember reading about them early on in the war, but nothing until towards the end.

That's true especially with Twitter and FB down for Russia. I'd assume they're more focused on squashing dissent than keeping the bot farms going so we'll see a huge drop in troll accounts.

I'm going to put more blame on the Russian infantrymen who repeatedly fired on a civilian vehicle. Journalists report from conflict zones with great frequency and often aren't embedded with military units. The Sky News crew looked about as prepared as they could be, clearly they at least had plates that could stop rifle rounds instead of just soft armor. The cameraman looks to have gotten stuck on the dirty side of the vehicle after it got hit, which is a really poo poo place to be. Glad he made it out of there without injury or worse.

edit: the US has had thermobaric AT-4 rounds since at least 2004 and used them in urban combat in Fallujah but obviously there's a world of difference between that and just lobbing massive thermobaric munitions into urban centers.

Ukrainian

So close enough it should be obvious to anyone bothering to listen.

I was thinking no way would the resupply be anything like Operation Nickel Grass during Yom Kippur War as how the heck would NATO be getting supplies in sufficient quantities to Ukraine when Russia would have full command of the skies and the Ukrainian army would be too scattered to make effective use, but holy cow.

From my understanding despite some of the piss poor logistics of the early Iraq war (body armor, et al), the US is able to pull off some amazing logistics and supply operations. I’m assuming even the early problems, much like urban combat doctrine, evolved heavily over the time to fix or at least mitigate issues.

Body armor and armored humvees weren't much of a thing before Iraq 2. Flak vests were issued, but plates weren't as present before Iraq, definitely not much of a thing for logistics and support units.

Gearing up a troop has really become its' own thing the last 20 years. And it looks like russia spent that time pounding their dicks in the mud. Not that we haven't had flaws (ACU pattern, plastic ruck frame, etc), but when you have a $700 Billion budget and lovely acquisitioning generals, you get worthless equipment somewhere.

i wonder if the column hasn't been obliterated simply because we know a significant portion of the army is conscripts and political prisoners, so they're simply keeping it immobilized, which would help overextend and exhaust the more active combatants who pose an immediate threat.

There's generally a reason for all of that, because generally the American military wants to win its wars, in the quickest time, at the lowest possible cost, at the lowest possible loss of life. A lot of that is logistics! Now, we *suuuuuuck* at all of the above, but we're probably one of the best militaries because all of the others suck worse.

So American intel is basically saying "yeah lol the Russians are sucking, but they could still adapt to the fuckups and change tactics." But, the russians really want to win, as quick as possible, but they have two gigantic cost controls (insufficient money AND lots of grifting) and they don't give a gently caress about the lives of their military people.

It would make sense. Losses are one thing, but forcing a rescue/resupply/reinforcement effort is far more intensive and expensive, not to mention demoralising as poo poo.

would needlessly slaughtering them work for or against them in the mind of the common russian?

like, on one hand save all the kids to go home(like all the prisoners they take who get to call their moms) but otoh, like, raise the cost of the war

The common might Russian categorize conscripts in the same mental way the average American categorizes felons, so overall they may be ambivalent.

However, it may be a calculated risk so they can make NATO look like the bad guys, by bad faith actors online, which have been their most successful asset to date.
