It is. For example for the Su-34 they had on paper 134 airframes. Even in the best of times a 1/3rd of your airframes are out of service due to repair, maintenance, etc. Judging by the state of the Russian military as we have seen I would say that a significant amount are not flight worthy at any time. You could that with requiring units not only at the war front but also in various parts of the country for defense and in Syria. Losing even a handful makes you start making very hard choices. You couple this with even in the best of times they are only able to make about a dozen new airframes a year, which considering sanctions and the general lack of money for procurement means every loss is likely unable to be replaced any time soon if ever.

Every loss hurts and greatly effects the long term security and defense of Russia at large and their ability to project strength in the future.

Because their country just came into possession of an absolute shitload of drones and MANPADS so you can have hundreds of groups head into the forest with a bunch of the things and see what they can kill? You can still use that AWACS info to identify high traffic areas and to give even more head's up time to the teams.

As he slowly runs out of gas, electricity, heat and food, some comrades try and fail to escape by braving the mud, while occasionally the higher ups are shot down out of nowhere.

I do feel kind of bad for these guys. On the other hand, they were on the way to bombshell civilians and will likely still do so if they ever reach their destination, so gently caress 'em.

Whats interesting is the tree branch shrouds over the windshields. Some look like they're to stop small arms fire or grenades, but some like improvised limb risers.

No. Just... no. Trucks have bumpers, those logs are above the bumper.

Some practical uses would be camoflage (it breaks the truck's pattern from that direction, even better if you're parked under trees). And if you have to cross a muddy field you can try to lay them down as a poor man's corduroy road. But mostly I feel it's common military superstition, like carrying a little bible in your breast pocket so it would catch a bullet. Also truckers have strange tastes for decorating their vehicles in general.

it is most likely more desperation armor. soldiers gluing all kinds of wacky bullshit to their vehicles is as old as anti-vehicle weapons. the best thing these guys have at hand is logs and rope, so thats what they're using. it is a really bad sign that the russian soldiers feel like they need to resort to this, meaning they've definitely got a negative attitude towards their survivability in supply trucks (things you generally want to avoid putting anywhere they can be shot at) and these guys also have the time to sit around and treehouse their vehicles in the middle of a war zone

here's another example from ww2, just cover your tank in sandbags i guess

:goonsay:

the primary value of sandbagging was often in protecting the machinegunner or driver from spalling or ricochets - measures to counter HEAT munitions was usually in the form of mounting the tank's spare tracks as additional armor, or using other "hard" material. however, tests revealed that sandbags actually did a decent job of taking the bite out of angled or glancing shots, and could often cause said shots to not penetrate the armor

The thing we have to note is that in the beginning of the invasion, the first things to get blown up or the rail connections from Ukraine to russia. As well as Bridges to Belarus. In doing so the ukrainians were able to prevent the Russians method of troop and supply transportation which is train. As well as the fact that the skies are not safe, supplies are going to be tough to bring in. And have to be trucked in. However the more trucks you have the more fuel you need. And the less actual food stuff you can bring because more of your transport capability has to be dedicated to keeping the thing moving. So it's a delicate balance of bringing enough supplies to keep the troops happy in and of gas to keep the trucks moving. Obviously the Russians have failed in the logistical challenge since the nature of it is something they haven't dealt with in a very very long time.

I'm seeing reports of partisan activity on the border of Ukraine and Belarus at the road where this convoy starts. Atgm is being used to blow up trucks etc about a week ago I said that this would help trap the convoy it looks like it is doing that. The more of the back of the convoy becomes disabled the more likely people are just going to walk back into Belarus and leave their equipment slash vehicles. As it will be a complete and utter disaster to try to do a complete U-turn in the mud if they even have gas/battery power to turn the loving trucks on.

Russia is hosed. Jump on the decisive victory train and let's rock
