He didn't say poo poo like this over the past 20 years of him consolidating power because it's not the kind of statement a head of state makes when they are doing well. I mean yeah, that's a real possibility - one that is backstopped by the failure of Putin to exert complete command and control over his forces up onto this point. There are reports that suggest that desertion has been a somewhat regular occurrence during this conflict - a situation that I would imagine would be exacerbated if Putin was to command his military to start committing warcrimes as a matter of course. But yeah it's a bad situation that has a lot of potential to get much worse.

A Russian refugee camp is still better than being in an active warzone. It makes sense to open corridors to those areas instead of trying to coordinate convoys across the entire country and hoping a few buses full of civilians don't get blown up.

The Russians want people out of the cities, or at least it viewed as they left so anyone remaining is considered hostile.

Dick Ripple posted:The Russians want people out of the cities, or at least it viewed as they left so anyone remaining is considered hostile. No they don't. Civilian casualties are a feature of their strategy, not a bug, otherwise they wouldn't be intentionally shelling evacuation points. They're struggling to beat the Ukrainians at a tactical level, so they're resorting to terror bombing to force the government to capitulate. This is the same playbook they used in Chechnya and Syria. I wouldn't put it beyond them to try some pretty diabolical poo poo with their PoW camps, especially now that they've banned most Western media outlets.

Hopefully the link inside the quote works, but I've quoted the entire article just in case."BBC quoting the Red Cross posted:Dominik Stillhart, director of operations for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has been speaking with BBC Radio 4's Today programme. I know the "humanitarian corridors" were a bunch of bullshit, but this is a new loving low.

https://www.reuters.com/world/kremlin-says-russian-military-action-will-stop-moment-if-ukraine-meets-2022-03-07/ Russia is offering terms that were kinda in the realm of possibility a few weeks ago so while I doubt it’ll end soon the fact they may actually want to negotiate is a pretty big change.

Russia's demands from the start were to cede large chunks of Ukraine to Russia, stand down the military, submit to Russian dominion over domestic affairs, and promise to never do anything that might change said dominion. It was a non-starter then and is still now. Complete capitulation and surrender to hostile invaders when said aggressors have a storied history of bad faith action would be a bad idea.

It's not about saying Russia bad - its about calling out obvious bad faith as obvious bad faith.
