100 Ukrainian dollars (I don't know what it's called, but it works out to about 5 bucks Australian) to transfer this money to the single account at the National Bank of Ukraine to help the Ukrainian army. That's for that poor family and dog that was killed on the bridge. It's a pathetic amount and unworthy of any gang tag.

My family cleaned up my grandmother's house over the weekend (she died this summer), and today my brother and I picked up two Ukrainian families from the airport who were on vacation in Mexico when the war started. They were obviously exhausted, and the reality of the situation hasn't quite sunk in. They're from Kharkiv. Apparently, they're still considering trying to make their way back, because their parents and pets are there, and their suburbs hasn't been damaged. Any goon advice what more I/we can do to help them get settled, and process things psychologically? I don't know how overtaxed official support is right now. We're going to help them contact the Ukrainian expat community tomorrow, and see if they have decided on future plans. Unfortunately, the house is out in the boonies, so public transport to the city is a bit of a hassle. At least Ukrainian refugees travel for free.

I just spent the past few hours helping sort donations at the local Ukrainian Catholic Church. So much stuff has been dropped off by people wanting to help, which is great. Unfortunately some people are not thinking about what they are dropping off. Please, don't donate high heels and swimsuits. I spent a good half hour rummaging through boxes of shoes trying to find stuff worth shipping. If you want to help, call the church or community center in the area. Most likely they are going to want medical gear, non perishible food and money. The church I was at today is chartering (with other churches on Long Island), a cargo plane to Poland. They do not want to ship clothes over, they want to ship stuff the soldiers and people need now.

I donated earlier to a couple different charities providing aid. But its a pretty sweet gangtag that I'd like to get in on. Or just add it to the tally, its all good.

Holy poo poo, I'd definitely focus first on getting them into an EU country safely. No paperwork needed. I don't know anyone working that far East but I'll try to find out.

XakEp posted:I have family trapped in the Donbass region. We are trying to get them out, does anyone have any suggestions for how to get them refugee status and into the US? Most of the Ukrainian refugees have been focusing on getting out of the country and into Poland or Hungary, and I’m sure that is going to be their immediate focus. If the family members are immediate relatives of an American citizen then they can immigrate legally subject to a petition. You can find out more about that here: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/guides/A1en.pdf Otherwise, refugee status can be difficult to navigate but remains possible. Given the political aspects of the situation, it seems likely that the US may prioritize Ukrainians or increase the 10,000 person annual cap on European refugees. If that happens, it could cause a major shift in that process. You could try contacting your congressional representatives to try and get assistance in navigating that system.

XakEp posted:Maximilianovka and Vinnytsia - west of Donyetsk. The villages near them have been flattened so we're trying to get them out. Oh yeah, your people in Maksymilianivka are right on the frontline. Not sure which Vinnytsa - the small one near Dnipro, or the big actual Vinnytsia near in Western Ukraine, but either is much safer. Your Donetsk folks should go to https://dn.gov.ua/ and call the government hotline, and Vinnytsa folks should do the same with their local authorities. For Donetsk, it will probably be a drive through either Zaporizhia or Dnipro, then through Kryvyi Rih to Vinnytsia, later Ternopil - and then deciding which border to go through. If they don't have a car - https://www.facebook.com/Ukrzaliznytsia/ evacuation train then, with hopefully government-coordinated car lift to the closest train. As for yourself, I'd say talk to your local (US) government to figure out what you should do, and which EU country should they flee to for ease of later paperwork (they can enter either with nothing but passport), but either of them will be a better option than living 4 km away from frontline. One thing you should also investigate, depending on what kind of information will your people receive from local authorities, is the capacity of border checkpoints, since some of them are utterly jammed.

I'm not sure which Vinnytsa either, we can't get in touch with them reliably so I'll find out. The family in Maximilianivka is definitely in danger, but they're older and will be harder to move. I will make some calls and see what I can do. Thank you all, its very overwhelming trying to help them.

My immigration lawyer friend in Philadelphia said that right now Ukrainian applications are on top of the pile. If you can get people in the US, they get 18 months visas along with a work permit and driver's license. I believe the Visa applications can be submitted by anyone anywhere, but the applicant refugees will have to make their way to a US embassy, likely in Poland. https://pl.usembassy.gov/visas/humanitarian-assistance-and-visa-information-for-ukrainians/

If you use Amazon Smile, there's a ton of Ukraine charities; I just changed mine to Nova Ukraine (from SPLC.) It's *only* a 0.5% donation of everything you spend at Amazon (and you have to do it from the smile.amazon.com link and/or you have to enable it in the mobile app if you use that) but I guess every little bit helps (especially if a lot of us get in on it.)

I thought that I'd update my unofficial tally since it's been about a week since the last time I did. Goons have donated at least $24,263.37 USD to a variety of international relief organizations - the majority of funds directed to Médecins Sans Frontières, the International Rescue Committee, or one of the many Red Cross societies around the world. It's a really wonderful act of generosity and global mindedness to be proud of.
