Slowly making my way through the Chucky franchise so I can watch the series everybody liked so much. I didn't think they were going to top the doll sex scene from Bride of Chucky anytime soon, but watching John Waters creep on Chucky rubbing one out into a cup so Jennifer Tilly can turkey baster inseminate herself with the titular Seed of Chucky... yeah that'll fuckin' do it :stare:

Also  at all the Tilly meta jokes. "What was that scream?" "Uh, nothing! I'm watching Bound! Gina Gershon is fingering me!"

I also just watched the entire Chucky franchise a few weeks ago so I could watch the show. I was surprised at how much fun the series was to watch, it was corny and over the top but in a good way. The only ones I didn't like were 3 and the remake with Mark Hamil.

I finally watched Censor and I'm not sure how I felt about it. Unless there's some reading of it I missed, the intended explanation of what happened seemed to be literally explained by one character halfway through.

I'm also not sure what the film's message was. It seems in some way to validate right wing fears that exposure to "video nasties" influenced violent behavior?

Or perhaps implying that figures like Enid who claim to be protecting the public have trouble distinguishing between what is real and fantasy.

I'm also still curious about the repeated "the violence/evil is inside you" that Enid keeps hearing. Is that Enid's survivor's guilt or the filmmaker asserting that violence and depravity are inherent to people?

I interpreted it as your last point, being generally about how censorship can be pointless and even harmful, especially self-censorship. Enid finds the lines between fantasy and reality blurred because of her own repressed trauma, not because the films themselves are inherently a bad influence. None of her coworkers had the same problem, and the murders that kick off the plot of the film would've happened whether or not that guy saw Deranged.

Just (re)watched Final Destination 2 and drat, it holds up when it comes to memorable deaths. The CG is dodgy but most of it's practical effects or compositing.

Weird to see, in hindsight, the obvious lighting, fashion and hairstyle of the early 00s. The main character, Kimberly, looks interchangeable with a dozen other horror movie protagonists from that era, including Anna Faris in the Scary Movies.

She doesn’t get enough credit for leaving Mom between seasons, forcing them to have to pretend her character was on the end of a phone until it ended.

I didn't end up watching any of those, gonna do A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night tonight though I'm pretty sure. I've been watching ALTER shorts as usual, and loving a lot of them.

Also, has anyone seen Cold Fish? It's gory right? I'm interested but I can't get through nasty gore and some Letterboxd reviews have worried me.

I honestly probably have most hours watched on Tubi right after Netflix. They have so many random rear end monster movies, and I don't give a poo poo if I finish them, so that is what is usually on when I'm going to bed.

Haven't visited this thread in a long time, but Shudder is doing a big push on French horror and I finally got to see Martyrs last night. HOLY poo poo. I missed it when it first came out, but I remember the response basically being, "This is brutal and relentless, and Cannes had fainting and walkouts and blah blah blah." Through no big effort of my own, I managed to go in relatively blind. It's not just brutal, it keeps escalating in more and more bonkers ways. Like, I kept getting to checkpoints of, "It's been 20 minutes and how does the movie go on from here?" "It's been 40 minutes, where can this POSSIBLY go from here??" "HOLY poo poo, WHAT IS HAPPENING!?" If you've never seen it, do not sleep on it.

Martyrs is awesome and I think totally lives up to the hype. I wish I felt the same way about Inside. It’s not terrible or anything, it just didn’t hit for me the way it apparently does for other people. Probably due to that chintzy looking cgi fetus.

Yea it's kinda tough to even hold up Martyrs as like, the best French Extremity has to offer because yea, on the one hand it is but on the other hand it's totally unique and I don't think anything else from the French Extremity movement lives up to it.

flashy_mcflash

Maybe I'm off base but I think a lot of FE builds on what came before it, kinda like an arms race for disturbing content. If you go Funny Games > High Tension > Frontieres/ILS > Martyrs there's a clear progression there to me. It kinda stops with Martyrs though because I've always read it as a commentary on the violence in FE as a whole.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

Grimey Drawer
I'll always stan Martyrs as my favorite 'gore porn' movie, as it isn't JUST about putting the most hosed up thing you can think of on screen, there's an actual narrative reason for everything.

Oh no this girl was traumatized as a child and just murdered an innocent family. :(

Oh NO a secret basement, they really were a crazy murder family. :stare:

OHNO the family is part of a secret organization torturing women to see what's in the afterlife. :catstare:

And that ending :discourse:

Nice! As part of my return to Shudder, a few nights ago I watched Darkman for probably the first time since seeing it in theaters in 1990. At the time, 15-year old me had no real reference for Sam Raimi, but it's amazing to go back and see it now, and how much all of his cinematic tricks are on full display. Snap zooms, dutch angles, sped up footage, goofy ADR, transposed montages... Reading about it, it sounds like that stuff is also only in there because Sam drove the studio-provided editor crazy. Can't wait to hear his take on it. Also a funny bit of trivia, Darkman is the second Raimi film where he tried to cast Bruce Campbell as the lead and the studio said, "No friggin' way could that guy carry a movie." (Crimewave being the first).

I'm irrationally angry that when they couldn't get Neeson back for Darkman 2 they re-shot the ending of the first movie with Arnold Vosloo and pretended that this is what the guy always looked like. He changes his appearance! That's his whole thing! You can have him lose his Liam Neeson face data and have to make a new scan from some schmuck played by Arnold Vosloo, there you go!

Sweet, that's on my list for sure then.

Just finished A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, and WOW! I expected a sleepier, old-timey silent film pacing with drier characters I guess, but I was proven a fool. Loooove the characters, the setting of "Bad City" and the moody atmospheric tone.

Fantastic ending too. 5/5 on Letterboxd, and shame on me for putting it off so long.
