The doubling of the standing charge is normal and those seem like the new rates I'm getting on SSE.

It is aggravating seeing my mother complaining about the heating costs when 1. she didn't want to vote corbyn because his plan to nationalize utilities would "take us back to the 1970s when we had no electric for days" when she is now huddling in one room trying not to run the heating or electric during the day. And 2. she knocked some walls in and created one gigantic cavernous room on one side of the house that has three exterior walls on the assumption she was going to spend all day in it, and now avoids using it like the plague because it costs an absurd amount to heat which would have been blindingly loving obvious to anyone with half a brain when you built the god drat thing. Also it is a kitchen and obviously everyone wants a kitchen that runs the entire length of the loving house and has no corner counters and where the hob is like 25 feet from the sink. Which I think she has also realized is stupid because now she wants an island unit to put more crap in and because half the counter space is at the other end of the loving building.

Ofgem have moved a bunch of costs from being covered by the unit rate to the standing charge. The standing charge is also covering recovering all the money lost to the brankrupt companies.

I hate that the fact that a failure of capitalism (hedging against futures and getting it wrong) is the people’s fault. Profits are capitalism, but debts are socialism. gently caress them all. “Oh we’re sorry that we’re uniquely exposed to market changes and have to pass the costs to consumers because ::shuffles notes:: utilities are unusually heavily privatised compared to anyone who isn’t Germany.” Absolute shower of arseholes.

Why do we even have a fire brigade, why not just have hundreds of insurance companies each providing their own fire service, that way you can decide whether you want to pay for ladder service and pick what uniform you want to attend your fire.

(like literally existed before the creation of the actual fire service because the insurance version was stupidly inefficient)

The only thing worse than having lots of ~choice~ is when you have none but it's privatized anyway because of free markets. Like with water, where I can choose to uproot my life and paddle in piss with a different company label on the rates, or rail where I can exercise my consumer choice by opting to travel somewhere completely different to where I need to. There won't be a dozen different fire brigades, there'll be one run by Serco and then Severn Trent invoice you for the water used.

These are the rates I fixed with Octopus for 2 years in October just before everything went pear-shaped. I've got Economy 7. (which is pretty useless for me as unless I have the heating on, I use under 1 unit per night). So your 27.627p doesn't seem unreasonable (in the scale of charges - not in the scale of WTF). Hi 26.22 Lo 17.41 SChg 24.95 Ed: the best thing the wretched government could do is block the rise in standing charges - maybe allow 2-3% and bail out the rest much as they do with banks and people who rip off the taxpayer by £bns in fraudlent furlough claims etc. Jaeluni Asjil fucked around with this message at 00:10 on Mar 10, 2022 |

So as a customer of a defunct company, the difference between the market value of the energy I consumed and the price cap is being levied on the standing charge rather than the unit rate? By spreading the cost equally across all users, Isn't that a sneaky bailout of the high consumers of energy at the expense of low consumers?

Jaeluni Asjil posted:Just come across this app: I think it was mentioned in this thread s couple of months ago because I started using it after that - very nice the amount of Greggs stuff you can get from a bag. £2.59 gets a couple of sandwiches, some sausage rolls, some bakes, and a few donuts. Have recommended it to all my friends and now one of them does pretty much all his shopping in there, buys mystery bags from supermarkets and then lives for the week on whatever he gets.

Yeah Too Good To Go is excellent. I can also recommend Olio, which I use for free stuff but is also used by people who collect food waste from supermarkets to distribute to people who want it. A lot of supermarkets have signed up to give food waste to Olio volunteers (my wife does it)

If things stayed the same at the next election I just wouldn't have voted but if Boris kills Chelsea FC I might have a reason to vote Tory for once in my life. Obviously I won't but at least the Tories in that one specific case are offering me an opportunity to relish in some spite at an entity I hate. Labour offers nothing.

The Alba Party, led by Russia Today talking head Alex Salmond, has been infiltrated by pro-Putin spies? Well I never. <dons Energy Professional hat> Right - bullshit meter readings and how to deal with them. My advice to anyone so afflicted is to take a photo of your meter at the same time every day for a week and submit those readings - most suppliers will let you do this online. Call the company when you take the first read and let them know that you're disputing the bill, letting them know you can supply the photo as evidence. Make sure the photo is both date and time stamped; phone cameras do this automatically. If you're close to payment deadline then also ask them to put a hold on the account for 7 days while you establish baseline consumption. The correct term is a stop, but don't risk getting the idiot who started last month and thinks you're asking them to disconnect the supply.
