Did they ever patch the thing where if you attach a laser sight to the pistol but not a scope, it becomes 100% accurate no matter how many skill points you invest? Learning that gimmick probably ruined the game for me because it meant I never had to learn to get good, but I still consider it a classic

I assume it must have been a bug, since as soon as you attach a scope the gun goes back to working like normal, but I was never quite sure.

I’m pretty sure Shifter and Biomod actually penalized you if you put both on a gun.

I always thought it was the other way around: laser sight is working as intended, but adding a scope causes it to glitch.

I'm real dumb and always thought up until now that the laser sight did nothing to statistically improve accuracy and just put a graphic of a red dot there and was functionally useless except for people playing with crosshairs turned off.

This is mostly correct. Attaching a laser to any hitscan weapon (pistols and rifles) makes it 100% accurate. Attaching a scope to either pistol adds a -10% penalty to maximum accuracy unless looking thru the scope, making them much less suitable for run-and-gunning.

The laser sight has no effect at all on weapons that fire projectiles instead of bullets (crossbow, plasma gun).

Huh, i always assumed the unscoped functionality was bugged, it seemed odd to me that you could be 100% accurate on a gun you were untrained with.

That said it's been ages since I've played DX, there are probably other benefits to upgrading your pistol skill i'm forgetting. I know it affects reload speed, maybe rate of fire and damage get upgraded or something too?

To be fair, pistols with lasers on them are genuinely much easier to aim when you're a novice; I speak from experience. It's the difference between missing the target and hitting three-inch groups at 25 yards for me.

I’m not convinced it’s a memory leak, I think Prague is just poo poo huge and it takes a bunch of memory. Last time I ran MD, I was fine in the intro mission but started getting micro stutters as soon as the game dumped me into Prague. Caveat: I was running the game on low-minimum spec, 8GB of RAM with a 760gtx.

Perpetually a Pain.
When I played MD a few years back, I was having a lot of trouble, then found something that suggested the game requires at least 32 gigs of ram for some hosed up reason. At the time, not having that, I found someone's suggestion on how to mess with your page file settings to make up the deficit, and that seemed to mostly resolve the issue.

May still be the case today.

edit: I know, reddit, but it summarizes the issue fairly well: https://www.reddit.com/r/Deusex/comments/50nrj8/try_this_is_your_game_crashes_with_memory_errorpc/

I really dislike how the hacking minigame looks in Mankind Divided. It looks so busy and unclear.

Also, what's up with the awkward pauses in dialogue :raise:

It’s so interesting that everyone trying to pick nits about DX1 always complained that hacking is just hitting a button and waiting, but it turns out the DX1 designers were right all along. It’s better to just make it a “passive” ability with a timer than to try and make a hacking minigame good enough that players don’t mind being pulled out of the regular game dozens of times.

I think that's kind of a modern thing; I suspect a lot of people are quite happy with Jensen's hacking minigames (plural, remote hacking!). There's always going to be someone who doesn't like some small thing, and the more successful the game the more widespread tastes you get. Could you imagine the hot takes we'd be hearing about if DX was selling 10x as much?

I don't have a problem with DEHRs hacking except that the designers loved it so much it replaced lock picking and multitools. If you have a mini game not everyone is going to like thats all the more reason to have alternate routes.

Alchenar
Apr 9, 2008

It's the Pirates! problem. Sword fighting is awesome, ballroom dancing is terrible. They're both rhythm games using the numberpad (sword fighting is better not because it is sword fighting but because the player gets to be proactive rather than reactive).

The lesson is that if you are going to have a minigame then there needs to be either an actual skill element to it (Skyrim's lockpicking is now pretty much industry gold standard) or it needs to be consistently and universally fun to play.

e: the problem with the hacking is that it's consistently pretty easy to just brute force click your way though the nodes without needing to worry about any of the niche features of the minigame.

the hacking minigame on its own already isn't that fun or interesting, but then they also made you do hacking for everything instead of being one of three skills for doors, keypads, etc, which means literal hours of gameplay will be spent doing it. if there was a mod to skip it i would install it in a heartbeat

Selenephos
Jul 9, 2010

DEHR does have multitools but for some reason in the initial release, Square-Enix thought it'd be a good idea to make players having access to them be DLC only.

https://deusex.fandom.com/wiki/Automatic_Unlocking_Device

Mankind Divided wasn't as bad since as cut up as that game was, they made multitools part of the main game and you also had remote hacking for alternate ways to open doors and keypads.
