How much does exploration or story/lore/world stuff play into the game? I really love bopping about in Stellaris scanning stuff and excavating archaeological sites and whatnot.

there's a fair amount but that poo poo's Stellaris's whole gimmick, nobody has as much planet-scanning as Stellaris

while there's less narrative variety it can be a bit more rewarding in DW on the whole, some of the stuff you can turn up in old precursor caches is pretty wild (also you can fix up any old wrecks you come across, which are everywhere and sometimes cartoonishly OP)

Everything said so far makes me happy with my purchase.

Again, assuming it's not a SotS II deal, which I really want to emphasise was the last time I pre-ordered a game.

I'm just a normal, functioning member of the human race, and there's no way anyone can prove otherwise.
With regards to exploration, I've ironically found that Stellaris has been way over-tuned in that direction. In a single 15 minute session I'll see no less than 20 popups regarding anomalies and ruins and "Situation Log has been updated" notifications. I found myself breathing a sigh of relief when an event turned out to be a little flavor text and a planet bonus instead of the start of yet another galaxy-spanning quest (that half the time I couldn't complete because the next location was too far away or in enemy territory)

I had the exact opposite opinion when it first launched, so maybe they've overcorrected. or maybe I'm just playing the game wrong now. They do keep completely reinventing the game every 6 months

ironically this is a problem that the state / civilian split of DW could solve really neatly. your state ships find stuff, generate lists of projects and possibilities, and then the civvies are the ones that handle the actual grunt work of long term surveying and research

The problem there with Stellaris is it's all extremely front loaded. You spend the initial exploration phase deluged with popups and then once you start bumping shoulders with other empires it's like, well, you found it, you found everything, good job. It's like if ST:TOS found literally everything there was to find in or near federation space and the entirety of TNG was just Picard and co hovering over earth giving science advice.

I wish they would stop developing Stellaris and make a sequel with none of the huge flaws the current design has that no amount of updating really solves.

There's also just not much game to the popup end of it, either, you rarely make any real decisions or mechanically engage with any of the vignettes just pull the lever on the slot machine and see a random little story fall out. Then you run out of stories and there's still not much of a game but it keeps going for 20 more hours

Hmmm? I feel like they recently said that with the Custodian team added that the number of people working on Stellaris was higher than ever. Unless you mean the change of Game Directors, though I don't know that that portends anything in particular.

I think Stellaris is probably the best it's ever been right now and enthusiasm in the playerbase is pretty high. I'd like to see a sequel as well but I think they can keep adding to it for awhile as well.

Yeah, this is ultimately why I keep ducking out on the game. It's constantly asking me to have opinions on each popup, but really it's just asking me "do you want to roll the dice now, or do you want to roll it later?", and that's just not a super interesting thing to do a billion times

the fact this type of system / design coexists in a game where you're also expected to micromanage both buildings and civilian job assignments on a planetary level is just so strange

Stellaris just updated it's AI to be something like 6 times more efficient when it comes to it's economy and fleet building, which makes the AI actually competent instead of eXtremely bad.

I sometimes wonder about modding it so you can only find anomalies in actually colonised space at the start, and have searching in deep space gated behind a mid game tech. On the one hand you might make the early game very boring; on the other it might pace things a bit better.

That's basically the premise behind the archaeology stuff they added, you get the normal surveys and then when you claim systems you go back and do a longer exploration for bigger rewards.

That research section is like someone was reading every single one of my feverish "make stellaris research good" rants while taking notes and making "hmm yes" noises and then slapped them all onto a SotS tree core.

I think Stellaris' biggest sin is throwing away all the character-based stuff from CK. Without it it's mostly just another bog standard MoO clone. Either that, or a Victoria-style politics and economy simulation would liven it up.

Stellaris biggest sin, imho, is to throw you into a sterile universe where past races are just dormant sectors and randomly seeded archeological sites. And then, a dozen races all starting at the same time from the same point. It'd be a lot better were it simulating the galaxy's history Dwarf Fortress style, resulting in preexisting borders, alliances, conflicts, etc, all documented somewhere (and you can learn about it through, diplomacy, galactic libraries, whatever). And potentially allowing you to choose to either pop in as a fresh FTL species, or to take over a pre-existing empire with its own past.

Stellaris is like playing Europa Universalis on a grey map where each nation starts with the same resources and a single province.

Yeah, this too. Also the fact that most races play kind of samish. There is some variation with the ethics you choose, but most of it is +/- X%, or a different special technology path which doesn't amount to all that much. Now compare to how big of an impact your religion and inheritance laws have in CK.

Like you said, too sterile and by the book (that has been out of date for the last 20 years).

yeah generally multiplayer games kinda require the playable factions to start on a level playing field, or a hell of a lot more interest in mechanical fine-tuning than the dev team have shown make asymmetrical gameplay work, Dwarf Fortress is one man's passion project and doesn't even have to support multiple cores

Agreed with the general sentiment that Stellaris's biggest sin is not being an entirely different game with unrelated mechanics and goals though. Probably not even a 4x, just really lean into the USS Enterprise simulator

No race customization either, from what I can see starting a new game. Weird lack of feature in 2022.

Edit: no mouse over help on icons in the main UI either, yikes.

Yeah it's cool I suppose but there's a ton of basic QOL and expected features (like choosing your color on the map) that aren't there. Like they went through what is clearly a lot of effort to poach Stellaris' moving racial avatars but don't let you customize much of anything, seems a weird set of priorities.

If you go into the icons there's a little ? that gives you a small tour of the associated screen.

Exit to desktop dumps you directly to desktop with no confirmation or autosave lol.

I'm talking like if I hover over my planet I can't mouse over the resources and get a pop-up. Gotta select the planet then mouseover. Still don't know what the 5k means on that panel either. There's an oil drum with a semicircle around it, no idea what that is. Etc.

Also what are the blue and red circles around ships? Seems it might be standard/point defense weapon range but I'm just guessing.
