it was really dumb to think what fans really wanted in terms of fanservice was to see the original trilogy cranked up to 11, rather than adaptations of their favorite extended universe material. The Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons were popular because they were telling a lot of different stories that added context to an unexplored aspect of the universe. They weren't bringing Palpatine back for a big finish.

There's a lot of people out there who will happily lap up the slop, but Rise of Skywalker really crossed the line in terms of cynicism.

IIRC there's a comic book from the old extended universe material that goes decades back, which involved a socialist revolution. Socialism crops up enough in extended universe material that there''s a wookiepeedia entry for it.

it kinda says something that EU authors keep bumping up against "wow the old republic was kinda lovely and maybe the new one won't be better" and half of them decide that the answer is that fascism is the only solution

The whole Disney/Marvel cinematic project is really making me sympathetic to the idea that "all art is fascist." They can always approach liberalism's contradictions with their own thesis, but the synthesis where you figure socialism or communism is the real solution is anathema to the producers. So you either have to fall back on status quo ante, or re-tell the descent of liberalism into fascism. Which Lucas already did with the prequel trilogy. So it's just the same story being retold over and over again.

jedi were originally supposed to dress like Luke in RoTJ, the only reason Kenobi dressed like he did is because he lived in a desert planet.

Then later Lucas just decided that all Jedi dress like Bedouins.

the kotor stuff at least tried putting a slight spin on the aesthetic but the mmo was insanely lazy about it. the funny thing is also that they're essentially ripping off republic vs empire uniforms so everyone's in stormtrooper-inspired armor

even kotor watered poo poo down pretty heavily, basilisk droids in the original old republic comics were these huge biomechanical techno-beasts that mandalorians rode out of orbit like horses but the one we see in KOTOR 2 is just one of the fighters from Shadows of the Empire.

That last panel is fine. You can enjoy cartoons as an adult with an adult appreciation of the craft of animation.
It's fun to watch how creative the animators are at twisting Wile E. coyote into a bunch of strange shapes.

We live in a weird time where we constantly have "new" stories.
Hundreds of years people only had stories from characters in Egyptian, Greek, roman, Mesopotamian, Vikings, Hindu, Buddhist, Confucius, and Judaeo-christian cultures.
King Author, Sherlock Holmes, Jack Reacher are really new; to human sensibilities, it's really weird to only experience a piece of art once.

If you wanted to insult Star War fans, you just show off tweet of people saying 'Politician X is Luke and Politician Y is Darth Vader;' showing off how one's world view is seen through a single lenses. It's like explaining the world using a vocabulary of like 50 words.

Or you show off the pages and pages of theory, that twist up the story to finally end with, Luke being the bad guy, and Darth Vader being the good guy, by sheer will of head cannon being turned into criticism.

That comic jokes about how narrow a person's personality is, but really how much of identity is constructed from art?
Like all the poo poo I'm saying here is built up from me reading criticism, and art wouldn't even take up half a shelf at a library.

Edit: Another weird thing is how the story is locked in this stable medium. Even after the advent of writing, Stories change, because people would copy the story incorrectly, or just change it. Let alone telling stories verbally. And it was that way until that printing press.

Like all those pages of people trying to change the meaning of the story, would have stuck and actually changed how the story was told, if it were told orally,

Sometimes the trilogy does spend too much time inside the head of flawed (insufferable) characters but I really enjoyed how the background of environmental changes and revolutionary changes constrained the path those characters can take. "Men make history but not as they please" and all that.

Imo Green Mars is the best of the trilogy and Blue the worst. Do you think you will continue on with the series?

the new/current season of MY BRILLIANT FRIEND on hbo (adaptation of 3rd book) is pretty socialist so far, in line with the books. lila's getting communism pilled by pasquale after working in the awful meat packing factory owned by the local fascists, but the bourgeois lefties from the student movement are out of touch and getting her in trouble. oh and what's that, talk of aldo moro being insufficiently left? some bad times of the years of lead about to come? you better heckin bet this is Socialist Approved (TM) programming

I definitely agree, there's nothing wrong with liking something throughout your entire life, and there are some wonderful cartoons for all ages. There's nothing wrong with appreciating something for a long time.

But at the same time, it's okay to put something aside if it no longer brings you joy. I've used this example before, but I like Bob Dylan a bunch. I have a lot of his albums, and I could easily call myself a Bob Dylan fan. However, I haven't cared for much of his post 2000 output. I thought his album of Frank Sinatra covers was awful. I don't have to defend things I don't like. I like some of his music because it's good music, not because he was the one who made it.

A problem some Star Wars fans got into was the "It's Star Wars, so I have to like it" mindset, and then when they don't enjoy the new Star Wars thing, it creates cognitive dissonance, because Star Wars is Good; how could a Star Wars be bad?

But it's okay to say "Yeah, I like the original trilogy, but don't care for what happened afterwards." It's also okay to admit that one used to like something, but no longer does. One doesn't have to keep investing in a sunk cost. A nuanced opinion is okay to have, even if it doesn't fit easily into a Twitter post
