The biggest problem with do-stuff terrain in 8th was the random magical effects that all had the same effect of keeping units way the gently caress away from terrain.

It's probably more fun if you go in knowing that a smokestack is going to belch smoke.

There does need to be a thought process behind terrain rules. If it affects you negatively in any way, no matter how minimally youll general avoid it like the plague and then thats all it does, keeps you away and makes no go zones. You might as well make circles of impassable terrain at that point..

Think of it positively instead. The cactus shouldnt damage your model if you get close, it should damage models that try to charge you while in it.

Suddenly the cactus is seeing models move through it instead of slogging around it

When its down to 40k skirmish, who comes out on top? Kill Team or Necromunda?

Kill Team is going to feel more like small scale 40k. Necromunda is much more campaign and narrative oriented (but KT can still do that as well). KT is also going to have 1:1 WH40K army translations whereas Necromunda is all their own factions that don't really have a parallel. Necro is also a lot more about tight close quarters terrain. I think they both have their place and are plenty different design-wise.

KT isn't 40k but smol anymore, it does its own thing that's very cool. Necro apparently has books books and more books to play while KT is still pretty small entry, you can get teams from the web without buying the compendium/flavour of the month teams. Necro has much more developed campaign rules, individual fighters develop a lot more.

NM is less a skirmish game, and more a campaign RPG with skirmish elements. You can absolutely play a one off, but the game shines when you have an overarching campaign element. It can get bogged down on the minutia, especially between games, with tracking income, territory, etc. It's definitely not a deal breaker, just some people don't like that aspect.

If money is important, as stated, KT is probably going to be the less expensive option, as you need less to get started, especially if you already have some 40K models around. KT takes some cues from Warcry, so it's a bit lighter and faster than NM.

From a modeling aspect, you can go nuts with NM - pretty much anything goes with regards to kitbashing and making a unique gang of future weirdos. With KT, you can obviously do that too, but it's more "what 40K models do I already own that I can slot into this game?"

How does aeronautica vibe? From what we've read online it's ~150-200 points? Is that right? Can be played in about 45 minutes or am I way off?

We're trying to work out what the limit on what we'd need or want is; what's needed to get started - how many planes per game, game length, points size, etc.

Kill Team is a great competitive game. Necromunda is a great narrative game that will create moments you and your friends will remember forever. I play both, but if I had to pick one I'd stick with Necromunda.

Kill Team... nice set of rules, has people thinking about alternate activation orders, which 40K would benefit from, and can do a narrative campaign. But there's something else. A lot of 40K players, possibly all of them, are sometimes tempted to "just paint a squad" for another faction than what they're building an army for. KT lets you scratch that itch, and then you have a playable force unlike before when paining a single squad doesn't get you a playable unit, except maybe as allies. The bespoke Kill Team boxes have some amazing miniatures in them, and I've seen some great custom jobs like someone who made a team of Guard veterans but Valhallans, not Death Korps.

Necromunda is as good as the community it's played in. I know every game is but especially with NM. New KT is crazy good but tbh only if you play a faction with a full, new release... there's just so much more depth and character than the factions that haven't yet. Imo.

The new KT is the most fun I've had in a tabletop game for a while. Feels like xcom but on a tabletop. The bespoke, non-compedium teams are way better but only a few (kroot, death guard, necrons) teams feel utterly useless. It's super cool that i can tell my friends "grab a handful of dudes then come to the games store. actually gently caress it, I got some teams for you to borrow" because the real barrier for entry is if people can paint up a squad of dudes. Also yeah the rulebooks and poo poo

I'm hype for the new box as I skipped the chalnath box because everything seemed super lame, meanwhile this one seems more fun.

Speaking of which, is Epic stuff the right size to like, whack a tiny vehicle or a squad of guys on the base of a titan? Or is it a little TOO big/small to look good as a bit of basing flair? (For lack of a better word)

Oh dang, those titans are sweet. Really put mine to shame.

But also, yes, play epic. It is an amazing game.

I'm gearing up for another tournament. They are not going to play the standard tournament scenario, but will have missions that are randomly determined. They are then going to allow you to garrison in, or within 15cms of terrain on your board half. This is a major regional Epic tournament, I suspect they may rescind this as it is a huge gamechanger IMO. I'm reworking my Steel legion list to have way more Infantry Companies in it as if I can deploy them in cover, where they fight like way better units. I'm not wrong here right? I'm thinking about taking 4 infantry companies.

IMO the benefit of Armored Companies are that you get both speed and the addition of the Chimera firepower, as well as additional models to soak up blast markers. Dropping all of that into a firefight usually makes pretty short work of most formations on the receiving end. A dismounted Infantry Co is good for objective holding/denial, but, even with strength of numbers is still going to need really good cover for longevity.

YMMV of course - I tend to play aggressively, usually leaving my backfield pretty unprotected .

I thought that garrisoning in EA was an already existing band aid/rule for infantry detachments or is it normally not allowed in tournaments? Regardless, it's an excellent strategy to use for orks and IG players.

I guess the change is allowing garrisons "within terrain on your board half" rather than "with one unit within 15cm of an objective on your board half," which does give you potentially a lot more space to work with - depending on how the objectives are placed and how much cover is on the board.

Personally I'm all in favor of shaking up the (really pretty limited) "standard tournament scenario". There's a lot a lot of space to make tweaked or custom scenarios, and while doing so is likely to favor and/or penalize certain forces and builds, that's like half the fun of wargaming as far as I'm concerned.

I agree, I think it will be a better experience because the usual formula won't work. I'm going to play test a high garrison Steel Legion list with my usual opponent. He's also going and plans to take orks and just forward deploy warbands with Stompas and Kans.

The last tournament was dominated by Eldar, as seems to often be the case, so I'm hoping this shakes things up.
