You have to understand that these are powerful people, and are used to not hearing about how some of their opinions might be bad or lead to something bad. It's a widespread affluenza strain and the world just has to accommodate for this vanishing minority's feelings. All we have to do is suffer and die for them without publicly complaining and it's not like peasants haven't been suffering and dying throughout history already so it's really a small ask when you think about it.

There’s one stand of virgin forest in monongahela National Forest in West Virginia, which survived against all odds due to a surveying error, but it’s quickly succumbing to disease.

The primeval forest of West Virginia sounds so alien. No one will get to experience it again. This whole post was an excuse to post this quote from 1857. All of the laurel brakes were clearcut and as far as I can tell groupings of laurel this extensive don’t exist anywhere anymore.

Didn't something super similar happen in Minnesota too? Like there's a single stand of old growth purely due to a mis-survey?

Because we can.

If you want to scope some midwest old growth check out Porcupine Mountains State Park in the UP. About 30,000 acres of the park are old growth hardwood and it's gorgeous.

There's also the 20k acre Huron Mountain Club with 10k acres of old growth. It's a 150 year old private reserve established by logging barons who saw that the forest would all be gone and wanted to preserve the best for themselves. The club eventually had Aldo Leopold himself develop a forest management plan to maximize habitat quality. It's patrolled by off-duty cops and they absolutely prosecute trespassing to the fullest extent. The state really should eminent domain that bitch into a park, outside the Porkies it's the best topography and forest in the midwest.

for comparison the largest local landowner is a private equity fund that owns 200,000 acres of hardwood forest, including 52% of the landmass of a large nearby county. they harvest on a 20-40yr cycle.

the land was logged to the dirt, the stumps were pulled up, and surface rights were sold to the mining companies that held the mineral rights. the mining companies left and sold it to paper companies, then an emerging markets hedge fund, then private equity. the land has been changing hands now as a block for almost 100 years, and they're starting to parcel it out for development. michigan enshrines public access for tax-advantaged commercial forest land and local folks are starting to freak out.

“Once there were brook trout in the streams in the mountains. You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their fins wimpled softly in the flow. They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery.”

something i have learnt: when reading iucn profiles of endangered species, keep in mind that a huge amount of bureaucratic wrangling and paperwork and money goes into shifting species' official conservation status, so "near threatened" means "critically endangered" and by the time they're listed endangered they're basically extinct

it costs like a million dollars to officially move an animal from near-endangered to endangered, and you have to sue the government of wherever the animal is found in order to do it

so much money goes into deciding exactly what to call an animal, and exactly how endangered it is at a precise moment in time, and exactly when it becomes extinct in the wild. none of which helps the animal. it's deranged. the whole drat system is deranged

Dont worry, after the 2019-2020 fires that burned the entire east coast they created

quote:

The National Recovery and Resilience Agency will provide support to local communities during the relief and recovery phases following major disasters.
It will also provide advice to Government on policies and programs to mitigate the impact of future major disaster events.

Appropriations $283,577,000
Departmental expenses $53,304,000
Average staffing level 186

Problem solved. Just recover from the disasters as they happen.

shove some nuclear waste in there so the decay makes up for the energy we slurp. nuclear decay is what generated that heat in the first place iirc

and also maybe get the magma since i mean if you're there might as well go for borehole mines; they're like what, +6 mineral and +6 energy?
