How many of them even have bayonets? And were trained on how to use the wire cutter?

I can count on one hand how many times I even saw a bayonet after I finished basic training and the only bayonet I ever touched was the old M7, even though the M9 with wire cutter was adopted when I was two.

poo poo, I handled bayonets more than most. That was only due to the fact that I had 99 of them in a sealed box in my arms room. There were touched once a year when they were laid out, counted, placed back into the box with a seal.

LISTEN TO WHAT I HAVE TO SAY AS IT'S INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT!
One of our mechanics bought his own bayonet and put it right there on the front of his IBA.

When we were doing live fire convoy training in Kuwait just before OIF2, the retired Delta instructor mercilessly mocked him in front of the whole company for it. Treasured memory.

And I think I would loving die laughing if this years VDV-day (https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2020/08/03/the-mischief-and-mayhem-of-russian-paratroopers-day-a71040) would be the spark that turns into wider protests and societal upheaval. It would be a perfect opportunity to channel that anger and resentment, albeit perhaps not done purposefully, toward the system and politicians that put Russia in this mess. Probably worthless, but I could see them brought into the Southern theatre to relieve forces occupying Crimea, allowing those to be transfered to the Northern and Eastern fronts.

Though given how coordinated the whole assault is, I expect them to be thrown into the grinder wherever is closest to their gathering point.

That's Putin. He doesn't care. He bet big that he could strongarm the international community into complacency, but now that that isn't happening he's doubling down and trying a riff on Nixon's "madman" play.

But it's still a better option than doubling down as there's at least a slim chance that, if he removes his already tiny dick from the grinder, he might staunch the bleeding and muddle through, mangled, like North Korea has managed to. If he just sticks it in further, his regime will bleed out on the steppe.

Assuming, of course, that the videos we're seeing of rank incompetence from the Russian military actually reflect the whole rather than just its least competent parts.

He won't, if you have a massive follower count who generate a lot of engagement (even just yelling that you're wrong) that's a lot of eyes and time spent on the site driving up ad views. Even alex jones didn't get banned until he showed up in DC at a congressional hearing to yell at the twitter CEO in person.

This has got to be a movie plot, right? Nothing about this even remotely makes sense.

The Kremlin is increasingly desperate, because apparently they bet the house of Ukraine just rolling over and surrendering in front of the martial might of Russia. It turns out the forces they brought were completely undersized and underequipped to wage offensive war against an opponent the size of Ukraine.

They've also sold this misadventure to the Russian population as a minor intervention rather than a brutal all-out war, so they can't just start drafting men, because the public loves wars until it has to fight them. Besides, Russia's massive reserves are of questionable quality, in terms of combat skills and fitness. It's equally questionable whether they have the logistical capability to mobilize reservists quickly enough.

They tried calling on Kazakhstan, got snubbed, had the Belarusian military call it off and they got only small reinforcements from Kadyrov's private army in Chechnya.

That's the most likely explanation why the Kremlin has resorted to calling on random fighters from the Near East and goading Belarus to join the war. They need someone, anyone, to send them combat-ready, active duty soldiers now to break the stalemate.

The Kremlin's worst nightmare is ending up in a repeat of the Argentinian summer of 1982.
