Roughly a four star in American parlance, that is if its true of course. And if true it's also possible it's fake drama for some byzantine reason or another, or a friendly official conversation about their people leaking. It's not an arrest until Putin puts them on trial or falls them out a window.

Say, question. I've been reading through this article since it was posted a while ago, and something seemed to stand out to me. It's describing the Russian logistical system as heavily rail-based, with a relatively short range once it needs to rely on trucks. It also notes the enormous logistical requirements of its artillery, which I've seen referred to elsewhere as best in class and heavily focused on in the Russian army. Wouldn't all this add up to make the Russian army uniquely ill-suited for offensive warfare outside its borders? It feels like the combination of "We need a huge logistical tail to make use of our strengths" and "We don't have one outside our rail lines" is a particularly bad mix. Am I missing something? Is the logistical demand of massed artillery not as heavy as it seems from the article, comparable to any other given military unit? Or is the Russian Army just fundamentally designed to operate on the strategic defensive?

I could be wrong but IIRC the average Russian artillery battalion has about 2x more guns and 75% less logistics personnel than you would typically find, so I'm assuming they would be relying more on external logistics support. Which probably doesn't work out so well when you lack secure communications and also when there is a big corruption problem.

I just did some lovely napkin math and my guess is an artillery battalion of 20 guns firing 50 shells per day per gun would need roughly 10 resupply trucks daily, and that's solely for the ammunition. Factor in people to load/unload trucks, then add food, water, fuel, maintenance equipment, replacement equipment, looted mink coats and Yamaha speakers...

edit: Lol yep your linked article says it right there, they only have a platoon whereas the US would have a company

One of the unanswered questions in Russia’s war against Ukraine is the level of attrition being experienced by the Ukrainian military. Now it appears a US defence official may have given some idea.

According to the unnamed official, the Ukraine air force has around 56 fighters left after almost three weeks of combat.

While Ukraine started the war with just under 100 combat aircraft, a simple subtraction may not tell the whole story with some of those aircraft likely out of service for one reason or another, with maintenance issue being a historic problem for Kyiv.

Even so that would seem to suggest, at first glance, not insignificant loses even if the remaining numbers of aircraft indicate that Russia’s early claim to have “neutralised” Ukraine air force and air defences was wide of the mark.

It would also go some way to explaining the renewed effort to hit Ukraine’s airfields in recent days.

I think that's the bigger story at hand. The fact a country that basically had to rebuild their military in 8 years has been able to hold out for this long is pretty damning of the Russian military.

You ever think about how Russia was supposed to pay back all the gas money they were not adjusting for?

quote:

Since then, Ukraine has been able to fulfil its gas supply needs solely from European Union states. In 2018 the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce ordered that Ukraine's Naftogaz should import 5 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Russia, as required under its 2009 contract with Russia's Gazprom. However, take-or-pay claims by Gazprom for 2009–2014 untaken gas volumes were rejected. On 28 February 2018, the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce ordered that Gazprom pay Naftogaz for failing to ship certain amounts of gas through Ukraine gas transmission system. The net result of all claims was that Gazprom was ordered to pay Naftogaz $2.56 bln.

quote:

Former Ukrainian Prime-Minister Yulia Tymoshenko stated in November 2006, the company is controlled by notorious Ukrainian-born Russian mafia boss Semion Mogilevich, while in 2009 Vladimir Putin was quoted as claiming that RosUkrEnergo is owned by a business ally of Viktor Yushchenko. The Ukrainian investigation into RosUkrEnergo begun during Tymoshenko's previous term as Prime Minister was closed after she lost her position as Prime Minister in September 2005. According to a document uncovered during the United States diplomatic cables leak US-diplomats shared Tymoshenko's suspicions.

quote:

The company makes its profit on re-exporting gas to Europe. The size of the profit is defined by Gazprom through the export allowances of about 9 billion cubic meters a year. RosUkrEnergo supplies gas to the Hungarian gas distributor Emfesz, for example, which is also controlled by Firtash via his holding company Group DF.

quote:

Semion Yudkovich Mogilevich (born June 30, 1946) is a Ukrainian-born, Russian organized crime boss.... He is described by agencies in the European Union and United States as the "boss of bosses" of most Russian Mafia syndicates in the world, he is believed to direct a vast criminal empire.... He has been accused by the FBI of "weapons trafficking, contract murders, extortion, drug trafficking, and prostitution on an international scale."

quote:

Until 1998, Inkombank and Bank Menatep participated in a US$10 billion money laundering scheme through the Bank of New York. Mogilevich was also suspected of participation in large-scale tax fraud, where untaxed heating oil was sold as highly taxed car fuel – one of the greatest scandals that broke around 1990–1991.

Estimates are that up to one-third of fuels sold went through this scheme, resulting in massive tax losses for various countries of Central Europe (Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland). In the Czech Republic the scandal is estimated to have cost the taxpayers around 100 billion CZK (≈US$5 billion) and involved, besides others, murders and the attempted assassination of a journalist writing about the problem.
