From a cable provider? He might be on an older plan during the HD switchover and never wanted to pay the up charge. Cable companies won’t automatically switch you over to whatever new plans they have.

When I had directTV a decade ago they were still charging a $10 HD fee.

I don’t think you can even get a SD plan from any of the major providers anymore.

e: I say this having done no research and with no knowledge, just a hunch that SD is a thing of the past.

Why do so many universal healthcare systems not cover dental services? Were they not considered as important at the time when the programs were created?

Or am I wrong and actually most systems do cover dental?

Can't speak to other countries, but yeah dentistry isn't universally covered in Canada. There were apparently a bunch of reasons for it - fluoridation was relatively new and thought to be a huge fix, it was seen as something very controllable by the average person, dentists were against it (doctors were against Medicare too, but it was another fight), etc

There's a big push for it to be included by some folks (I think the NDP, our most left party, has it on the books as a policy they'd like to implement) but there's not massive support. A decent number of folks have dental insurance through work or other programs (low income people get covered in some provinces, I think anyone with Indian status as well?), dentists still oppose it, and overall I think people care more about prescription drug coverage so that gets more talk during electrons.

Optometry is another thing that's in a weird middle area - kids and seniors are covered for eye exams and I think glasses, in between it's either private insurance or out of pocket

I don’t believe that there is an agree-upon term for this, but there should be. It’s an old concept.

About all I know about helmets is that different helmets are designed to deal with different problems. I'm gonna guess that your roller blading helmet is designed for impact and abrasion resistance first, while the rock climbing helmet is more about impact resistance, saving weight, and breathability. They look like they have fairly similar coverages in terms of which parts of the head they protect. The main concern would be if the roller blading helmet obstructs your view or mobility in a way that the rock climbing helmet doesn't. But my inclination would be to say, sure, should be fine, definitely better than no helmet at all.

EDIT: ^^^ welp

I know very little about helmets as well but looking at the design here:

Looks like it's more concerned with padding the sides and has only hard plastic covering the top of your head. While this would be good if you take a fall and flip over to hit your head on the wall, I wonder what would happen if a rock were to fall and smack you on the head like Gavin's friend in that one video.

Canada also doesn't have universal pharmacare. So, you can go to the hospital for free, but sometimes you can't afford what they prescribe. There are government programs to help people pay for drugs, but since it's means tested garbage, it works more like insurance than a public service, with bureaucratic hoops you have to jump through to prove you need the drugs.

Plus it's all provincially managed so what/who is covered and how it works changes depending on which province you're in. It's a mess.

I hope it becomes a big election issue sometime but I doubt it.

Not really. But be prepared for a very long road. You need to be patient and empathetic. Try to find some common ground to start from, even (maybe especially) if it's completely unrelated to the issues of contention.

I have 2 questions.

1.) Does anyone know the name of a song where it's kind of a jazzy lounge singer song, and the only words I can remember is "I burn you to ash"

2.) Is there metal that isn't screaming and gurgling? Like Tenacious D but not comedy?

I mean, a lot of metal is intentionally tongue in cheek. It's probably a question better left for the NMD forum, but there's tons of bands that incorporate normal vocals and a bewildering array of subgenres. I'll throw out Opeth, Ghost and Mike Patton's various groups as (very different) bands that have melodic vocals on some of their records. But really there's a ton of stuff out there, its sort of like asking if there are rappers that do/don't use hashtag rap.

What do you count as metal? Black Sabbath is considered metal and Ozzy is a singer, not a screamer.

Oh, crap, I totally forgot Voyager, who nearly got selected to be Australia's eurovision entry but lost by six judges' votes (the public loved them overwhelmingly)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngBysDtBuvo

edit: guitar-heavy music with clean (or no) vocals is my preference, really. I can't stand death-growl (which is that "claw from Inspector Gadget" voice) and I'm not so great on screaming. A number of times I've tried to listen to a new band and been super into the guitar, only for the vocalist to start...

Anyway, I originally found these kinds of music using Pandora, and/or cribbing from the Guitar Hero series' playlist. But yeah, as other posters have said, I think what you want is progressive metal, power metal, symphonic metal, perhaps instrumental metal, but honestly even speed metal, thrash metal, "traditional heavy metal" or New Wave of British Heavy Metal. I think the main one to avoid is death metal, as far as I know that's most characteristically death growl or other extreme vocals.

edit edit: also, honestly, I got into some of these bands just be wikipedia'ing, looking up the origins of the genre. Some of the old stuff just loving rocks! Deep Purple and Black Sabbath and such are still really loving good.

I live in an open floor plan apartment furnished with a Bosch refrigerator that occasionally, perhaps once every ten hours or so, makes a noise very much like a rubber ball thrown at the wall. I think this is the auto defrost function. However, it's a problem because it wakes me up at night. I guess there's a chance it's not auto defrost (which cannot be turned off) and something is repairable here. But I'd like to be sure because the repair guy charges just to come out and look at it.

Does anyone else have a new fangled fridge that does this? Any advice?
