It's extremely slow and methodical. If you enjoy the deliberate languid slow pace, you'll love Red Dead Redemption 2. If you don't you'll loving despise it.

Movement and traversal is a little bit leisurely and can be tiresome after a bit.

One of the weirdly things that bothered me about RDR2 was that the cutscene and mission designs feel like they haven't really changed since Rockstar's older games. There's a lot of weird tropes, for lack of a better word, that still seem to hang around. Arthur gets approached by an eccentric farmhand, brushes him off, farmhand grabs him by the shoulder & says its important, Arthur reluctantly agrees and exits the scene while camera shows eccentric farmhand eating boogers. Then Arthur has to chase a carriage with scripted things getting in the way and returns the money to the eccentric farmhand who found a lady who also eats his boogers.

But despite that, RDR2 is also incredibly immersive and you absolutely do feel like a cowboy out in the frontier towns. That alone makes it worth the (currently half off) price of admission. Also the campsite parties are really, really well done and were the coolest thing I had experienced in a long time.

e: full disclosure, I got halfway through the game before having to return my friend's PS4 back to him. Then I bought it on PC and made it back to the halfway point again before burning out. Maybe the second half is donkey doo doo, dont know. If my save is still in the steam cloud, I'll hopefully get around to finishing it next year.

I loved RDR1 and I loved RDR2 but like the game design barely changed in the years (including the controls) and some things got slower and more methodical, more "cowboy simulator". The good news is that much of the added stuff that lots of people find tedious can just be ignored.

It also has the open world game curse of too much to do, but if you have the discipline to just focus on the main missions it's worth it.

Yeah, definitely agree that the controls are really bad, but its a great slow paced western game. Use the auto horse ride camera option thingy frequently and just take in all the beautiful graphics imo.

There's a plot twist in RDR2 where it makes a lot of sense after it happens to go into the mountains and work on your collections and camp out there doing open world nonsense forever, never coming back to the main storyline and unless you are really dying (hehe) to see the coda linking John's life to RDR1 this is even the correct place to stop playing.

For the goon that was asking Playnite handles emulators better than basically anything else I've tried. You just need to point it to the emulator and the ROM folder and it'll do a search on IGDB using the filenames to pull in all the metadata, and handle all the command line arguments etc for you. I think there's a way to customise that as well if you need to.

The metadata import isn't perfect (I just imported GotG from gamepass and it decided it was the Telltale game) but it's easy enough to correct and it beats the hell out of downloading individual images to import games on Steam.

Any idea why MEA would show up as two titles in Playnite? It's the same installation, I don't own it on different services (and Playnite sees it as such, the stats summary is identical)

I played Grim Dawn for like 20 hours and from what I saw in the game, and then googling online, was that you just focused on a damage element and just stacked every -resistance and +element damage you could find. Nothing seemed to change how abilities worked in any meaningful way that was just numbers tweaking.

My experience with Grim Dawn can be summed up with "grenado", which resulted in a build where I just one-shot any group of enemies I came across, pretty much.

Eventually my hands got tired and I just never picked the game back up.

First impressions of Playnite are quite good. Despite handling so many titles there's been zero lag/slowness.

Amid Evil is so good. I instantly like it more than Dusk, the setting, the weapons, the feel, the enemy animations, etc., just way more up my alley (and I liked Dusk!). Beat the first two regions but I'm super looking forward to the rest of it.

Thank, I'm downloading it now. I don't want my itch bundle games to get exiled in another app, and the emulated games definitely get "lost" easily unless I'm specifically into a certain game at the moment. I had problems with retroarch on my other PC but I will probably give that another try too. I hope after a little effort emulation can become an "it just works" thing, which for me it has never quite been.

Edit: I guess this would be a good time to get an epic acct too, get some of those freebies. How often should I check Epic to not miss out on freebies?

Is it because whatever service you own it on is also giving you access to it on Origin and it's double counting it that way? You should be able to hide the duplicate iirc

For the wrong aspect ratio box art, it might be it's pulling from itch.io by default and that's what they use. For games available elsewhere (like Nuclear Throne) you should be able to get a better one, but for some micro indie titles there might not be another option.

would it be to anyone's benefit to have a playnite thread?

and advice: would it be better in the long run to try to install and setup retroarch to be my emulator liason for playnite, or associate emulators individually? It would be nice to have a mere six points of failure for the perenially troublesome controller issues (windows, shadow, playnite, retroarch, and however the two instances of Steam would interact with the whole package.)

Having sat down at my computer to check, you should be able to fix most box art issues with Playnite by going to Settings > Metadata, scroll down to cover image and reorder so that IGDB is above Official Store

Wiltsghost

I think you can also just import any image you want for box art. Obviously if you have a bunch it'll take awhile. But for one or two it's not bad. I need to start using playnite again. Had to reinstall windows and forgot to set it up again.

The guy asked me if I had a boyfriend, and I lied hoping that he would leave me alone, but it didn't work, and for a second it looked like he was going to keep following me around.

Yeah, I know. Basically I thought it's not super easy to configure and two or three people who are also installing it could help each other out. It helps me organize my thoughts so that later I could post somewhere else or add to their lousy documentation, if the wiki feature is still functional.

Tenochtitlan, looking east.
The old Gold Box games are coming to Steam at the end of the month apparently.

RPS posted:

The Gold Box games are enormously influential, being based on classic D&D settings like Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, and Dark Sun and helping to establish the early template for CRPGs. They are honestly hard to return to now, but these releases will be enhanced by companion apps, a unified launcher, improved DOSBox support, and a tool for transfering parties of characters between games.

The games will be released via eight collections, as follows:

Forgotten Realms: The Archives Collection One (Eye of the Beholder I, II, and III)
Forgotten Realms: The Archives - Collection Two (Curse of the Azure Bonds, Gateway to the Savage Frontier, Hillsfar, Pools of Darkness, Pool of Radiance, Secret of the Silver Blades, Treasures of the Savage Frontier, and Unlimited Adventures)
Forgotten Realms: The Archives - Collection Three (Dungeon Hack, Menzoberranzan)
Krynn series (Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn, The Dark Queen of Krynn)
Dark Sun series (Shattered Lands, Wake of the Ravager)
Ravenloft series (Strahd's Possession, Stone Prophet)
D&D Stronghold: Kingdom Simulator
Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse

It sounds as if there are two companion apps, one for the Eye Of The Beholder series and one for all the others. They manage dungeon mapping for you, among other things.

They've been on GOG for ages I think, not sure if these versions will be the same or have additional improvements.
