The main problem is that anything with a trace of food on it will attract vermin. Rats, mice, cockroaches, you name it. It makes the recycling process much more hazardous and difficult.

At my local recycling centre where I cash in my beer cans you wouldn't (probably would) believe the amount of cockroaches that get about there. Also that latent stench of stale beer everywhere. There are some cool Magpies though that hang around the rafters waiting for cockies. They are really cute and sing along with you if you whistle to them. Also the staff laugh about people demanding to watch the bulk sorting thinking the jailbird workers are going to steal $1 here and there. One dude explained to me that he makes $35 an hour on weekends, why the gently caress would he try to sneak out 10 grotty beer cans under his shirt for $1.

isnt a common aluminum factoid is it was once more expensive than gold or silver and you let your second class guests at the mansion eat off those gold plates, while you let the important guests use the aluminum ones? Also the Washington Memorial in DC is tipped with aluminum.

oh but than processing Bauxite cheaper became a thing and it became a commoners metal. irrational rich people and their status chasing.

Somewhat true, though I remember the guy who sold the Washington Memorial topper was also quite politically connected and may have possibly oversold the value of the aluminimum somewhat at the time.

No, you are just operating at a very high level of pee geomancy. An amateur would simply pee off the side for height but a pro understands the power of peeing on the tip of an obelisk this size.

Planes, unlike faces, do not benefit from exfoliation

CommieGIR posted:

I wonder if that got exposed to mercury

I think mercury corrosion usually ends up with smaller grain structures exposed, but I've never had to deal with it in person. It does look like textbook exfoliation corrosion. Aluminum alloys can be temperamental when exposed to atmospheric oxygen or water, and I suspect they may not have had as great an understanding of how to prevent corrosion in the early days of aluminum aircraft.

The two big things that can allow exfoliation to occur in aluminum are improper heat treating or allowing the alloy to have direct contact with air, which we address nowadays by coating aluminum alloys with a thin layer of pure aluminum.

Because they don't want dirty aluminum. That's why you're supposed to rinse out your beer cans (etc) before you put them in the bin. If you put dirty foil in the bin you're making more work for the people sorting your poo poo and you're an rear end in a top hat.

gently caress that noise. The recyclers could implement a clean-the-foil-and-rinse-the-cans step in their process chain, but that would cost them money. But I'm supposed to use my hot water and time to clean the product that I'm *paying them to take* so that they can turn around and sell it to someone else? If it's that important, let the big corporation that's profiting from my waste stream do the work instead of foisting the cost off on me. There used to be recycling centers I could take my empty cans to and they would actually pay me for them, and they wouldn't insist I rinse them first.

Having individuals rinse their cans before recycling seems extremely wasteful compared to just cleaning them by melting the metal and having some pest control in place.

The danger with using fire to heat and apply tar to a roof is that you might set something on fire and cause a fire that burns for ten days:

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/414824/skycity-international-convention-centre-fire-was-accidental-report

quote:

Fire and Emergency Te Hiku regional manager Ron Devlin said it was inadvertently caused when the top layers of a waterproofing membrane - or cap sheet - were being laid on the roof.

"Our investigators concluded the fire started after the cardboard inner of a cap sheet roll was momentarily exposed to a flame from a worker's gas torch and began to smoulder," Devlin said.

"After smouldering unnoticed inside the roll, an intense fire developed that burnt through the top layer of the cap sheet, and then spread across the level 7 roof membrane."
