I'll try to explain it a little better than I did. My wife is an extremely well-credentialed and competent person who works in tech and day-in, day-out, gets the joy of dealing with the kinds of men who are drawn to math and compsci. She is hyper-sensitive to having voices on all sides assuming (without giving her a chance to prove it) that she can't possibly know what she's talking about or have the skills that she professes to have. We have young kids and relaxation time is precious-to-nonexistent. She *needs* her entertainment to (a) NOT have dudes duding it up, (b) not waste her time, and (c) ideally have compelling and interesting characters with motivations beyond shooting and sex.

In general, although she had a long love affair with Civ, she's played it out, and her ideal 4x would let her play at her own pace and not have any fighting at all. Why rely on violence? Dwarf Fortress sans goblin raids and sausagefest would be pretty great.

I strongly still recommend she looks into Crusader Kings 3. Warfare is kind of inevitable but it's entirely possible to play through it as peacefully as possible, using marriage and diplomacy to expand your realm + keep it stable, and only raise troops when necessary to defend yourself. Most AI characters are barely "characters" but they have traits that steer their motivations and goals. And, again, you can just play with full gender equality or matriarchies if you want to avoid the medieval Europe sausagefests from the get-go. If she wants "DF without the sausage fest" then CK3 with those optional rules toggled on gets pretty close

I'm not sure if tropico 3 is available on Android but I know it's on iPhone and I'd second that recommendation. IIRC there are some (completely optional and ignorable) ordinances you can pass that are kind of lovely upholding the nuclear family type stuff but I think there's also some explicitly codifying gender equality too? I haven't played in a while, I remember you can explicitly legalize gay marriage and I think there's other social choices along those lines.

Also, I promise I'm not trying to argue or anything but I'm wondering how DF is a sausagefest? I'm one of those people who hasn't played the past little while because I get so involved trying to create the perfect world that by the time I've generated it I ran out of time to actually play, but at least when I was playing the only difference I can remember between male and female dwarves was that the lady dwarves would carry their babies around with them for the first little while after they were born, whether in the forge or into battle or whatever. If I'm misremembering please correct me! I also usually turned raids off unless I was explicitly trying to play on hard mode because I mostly enjoyed building weird little dwarven societies so I get that.

Maybe try the Amplitude games, Endless Legend and Humankind specifically. They are similar in overall gameplay to Civ, with really unique races and mechanics that set them apart, as well as some of the absolute best music in video games.

Ooh, Endless Legend is a great rec too.

Also, I can't believe I only just remembered this but as a long shot maybe think about The Last Federation. I haven't played it in years so my memories are a bit vague, and it's Arcen Games so there's probably some amount of love it or hate it jank (I love it) but you're basically playing as a lone character in the world of a 4X style game and your aim is to get everyone organized into one federation and stop warring. There is combat in the game on the way to that goal, it's sort of a turn based real time 2d shooter that plays out in turns of a couple seconds at a time? Check out a video, it'll explain better than I can.

The real power behind countless overlords

Humankind is a solid alternative to Civ.

Which reminds me, the best Civ game of all time is Alpha Centauri. It's so old I'm not sure it is playable if you don't have nostalgia for it, but there are several female leaders, all rad in their own ways.

Heran Bago posted:

I recommend Graveyard Keeper. It's like Stardew Valley but a bit more focused. There is a goal and ending. The theme is a little dark but kind of charming.

Graveyard Keeper can be an okay alternative for some people who have played SV, but OP would definitely not be happy with it. Graveyard Keeper, is, by design, a game all about The Man punching you in the face over and over and over again.

Also, I don't remember there being any option to play a female. Now that I think about it, I think the only three female NPCS are a crone, a housewife, and the super sexy lady.

I'm in need a chill city builder/basebuilder/maybe survival game. Something that starts out in small scale, a small with a few workers maybe, and expands slowly. Preferably turn-based, but real-time could work too.
I want the town building aspect of Civ/AoE2 without the opponents, basically!

Surviving Mars. It's a chill survival basebuilder without opponents. You start off with a handful of drones setting up some basic infrastructure before bringing in colonists, and then gradually add more complexity and expansion as your population and needs grow.

Not at all imo!

Apex Legends is the best FPS right now imo if you like more fast paced slightly higher TTK, they just do everything so well it can be kind of tough to switch to other games. Even if you don’t usually like battle royales I think it’s worth checking out. Sadly Titanfall 2 servers seemed hosed nowadays, but apex also is adding more non BR modes if that’s what you’re looking for.

If you like CS, there’s that, and then Valorant.

Splitgate as mentioned is basically halo with portals, and ends up being pretty fun.

Sector’s Edge is a fun sort of indie fast paced shooter with a gimmick of voxel destruction/terrain placement.

Insurgency sandstorm is good as a slightly more tactical feeling FPS which flirts with being more realistic (ie super low TTK, minimal HUD), but really isn’t (not in a bad way!).

Squad if you want an ARMA like milsim experience.

An indie shooter sort of like counter strike but with a planning phase beforehand where you could draw on a map also came out recently and is good, but I cannot remember its name at all. Unfortunately it shares a lot of Google search terms with Due Process and that just drowns it out.

Have you ever played an Anno game, because they are incredibly chill, with lots of options to adjust difficulty and start on a pretty small scale and balloon up over time. There are several to pick from in different time frames, past and future, and I absolutely adore them.

Most CRPGs tend to have crappy loot as a rule but D:OS2's system was more interesting than most I thought. Many of the weapons and armor have their own specific activated skills and you can juggle around random pieces to, for example, give your 2H warrior enough points in Aerothurge to learn Teleport.

If you want an arcade romp, then Star Wars Squadrons is fun, especially in VR.

SlothfulCobra

Squadrons has a very short campaign, so it might not feel worth it if you're not going to do multiplayer or VR.

There's Chorvs, which wasn't really my bag last I tried it, but basically it's another kind of arcadey thing with its own wacky gimmicks. There's a free demo to try it to see if you like the feel.

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, definitely if you liked Rebel Galaxy.

Everspace made it to PS4 fairly recently, but I don't really know anything about it. There's also things like Elite Dangerous, No Man's Sky, and Starlink that I've heard about a few times but never checked out.

Everspace is basically a roguelike space shooter with meta progression. You go on a run where you fight your way through zones, finding your weapons and gadgets along the way, and upgrade your ship between runs. Its fun but not very deep.

Everspace 2 is in EA but shows a lot of promise. Its basically a modern Freelancer, drops the roguelike element entirely.

So other than Elite, what games are there that are good to get the HOSAS out and do some spaceship flying? NMS and Star Citizen are the big ones, then Squadrons I guess, and I know there's a project to remaster/remake X-wing somehow (is it in the squadrons engine? This is one for me to research for sure). But there's gotta be some other good 6dof flying games out there that I don't know about. Any recs? I guess there might even be a thread for this.

In any case, specifically for HOSAS (ie dual joystick) on PC any other good recommendations? The new Mechwarrior game and X4 were both recommended there. X4 looks like it might be a good option to try out, as does Everspace.

Solo Valheim is eerily lonely. A talking raven gives you some tips early on but you can tell them to gently caress off if you like, there's one other character you can interact with in a minor way if you're lucky enough to find them, and Odin occasionally watches you from a distance only to disappear if you try to approach. Oh and you might see one other Norse god from a great distance if you're particularly keen eyed.
