There was also a wesley discord, but I left that because it wasn't about STO at all. There's a stobuilds discord that's not goon-affiliated, but decent for answering build questions.

I changed my character because I purchased a new race, but immediately regretted it because they look kinda terrible at a second glance, so I went Vulcan instead. I'm now at T'ivaxi@morganamodegone.

Also a question, should I use a photon torpedo launcher, or can I just go full broadsides with phasers?

The character only matters a little bit. Once your account (after the @) is in #TheNextGooneration, any character can chat in there and request an appropriate fleet invite.

For the extended tutorial (levels 10 through 50), just use the best stuff that drops. It's really all vendor trash (with some unique mission rewards mixed in), and you'll want to unify when you get o 50+.

That said, you'll probably benefit from keeping a torp in the mix. Beams & Cannons are energy weapons, and damage depends on your power levels. Until you get the train going, keeping power levels up can be a challenge.

Of course, it really doesn't matter. The low-level stuff is tuned to die to anyone paying attention.

You can go Alien if you are indecisive about things. It opens up the entire costume shop, you can make pretty much every canon race and whatever other thing you can imagine. And since it's based on outfit slots, each outfit slot could just be an entirely different race if you so choose.

Alien char creation can't quite replicate a few of the odder head and body types obviously (Ferengi, Gorn, Jem'Hadar etc) but can pretty much copy all the usual forehead alien sorts and then some, yeah. It's a decent pick for fashion if you aren't really wedded to one of the canon races.

Did you buy the playable cardassians?

I've been "playing" as a "cardassian" since shortly after launch and I'm so much happier with the faux-Cardassian I was able to make with the various alien components in the character creator than whatever the heck they did with those skins.

Nope, I bought the cats.

I picked an engineering captain because I like turrets, and I'm using the T6 paladin-class I got from that free pack, though I admit I kinda liked the tiny cruiser I started with for some strange reason. I finished the first story arc, the Klingon one, and also did the two Terran missions that are apparently new. I'm kind of impressed with this game in general, so I'll be sticking around for a bit.

Off the top of my head, one episode of TOS (where the "evil version of the char has a goatee" trope comes from), a couple in Enterprise, a bunch in DS9, and lots in Discovery.

You can replace those skills whenever you want. ESD has a bridge officer trainer (hiding under the admiral's office) which sells most boff abilities.

I await that. I'm currently in season 2 of TNG (and I kinda dislike Pulaski already) and DS9 is the second show I'll watch. I must say, despite hearing how bad s1 was, I didn't find it to be particularly terrible. It might be because my previous show was Doctor Who.

Though some episodes were indeed bad and incredibly racist (hello Code of Honor), and I feel like Tasha Yar deserved a better sendoff than Skin of Evil.

My next campaign in STO apparently deals with Romulans. Looking forward to it when I get home tonight.

Pulaski grows on you. As a kid I absolutely hated her for not being Crusher, but the last time I re-watched I had a lot more appreciation for her. I kind of wish they'd brought her back in some other capacity. I dunno, at least a few cameos as head of Star Fleet Proctology or something on DS9.

The thing about trek seasons is that all trek has bad trek. There really aren't any entirely bad or entirely good seasons, but you certainly have a heavy skew in some of them. S1 TNG is way more mediocre than good, and it has some outright terrible ones. S2 that ratio gets better, and by S3/S4 poo poo's riding really high. S5 is still good and S6 and 7 start a down hill slide but it never gets as bad as S1.

As a note, the New Romulus chain is one of the worse they did. It is very repetitive, with a lot of running back and forth, and just not all that fun to do. I think there is an item or two from it that is nice to have (weapon or console, can't remember).

It is one where if you skip it, no one will judge you at all.

To be fair, the Terrans were responsible for the ship that brought my character the first (original) No-Win Scenario completion for any Federation team. (It was better than the MVAM, and Gravity Well on an Escort, or gravscorts, were a must-have for the later waves.) Oh, for the days when using Tractor Beam Repulsors to heal up the K.M. was a critical tactic, before the faceroll of power creep made it so easy to grind that they had to remove the scenario from the game for giving away too many Fleet Marks...

Yeah I like Pulaski just fine. They were clearly trying to set her up as Bones style likable curmudgeon type and mirror the Bones-Spock relationship with Data but she comes in way too hot with the android racism on a character that the audience has already had a season to get to know and like. The writers eventually get a decent handle on the character and then Gates McFadden got unfired so gently caress it Crushers back and we will never speak of Pulaski again.

There are a lot of people who confuse 'not like a modern show' or 'not worth rewatching a ton of times' with bad. There are like 3 genuinely bad episodes in TNG S1, and the rest are at worst an interesting idea that's very rough around the edges.

Picard S2- I really don't get what anyone was getting excited about on Twitter. STO ships getting used in the first episode is about the only thing to write home about. Also the first episode set up a much much much more interesting premise the Borg want to join the Federation? Why? Is it some sort of trick? Is something terrifying the Borg? And what happens when you put Picard and Seven in charge of that?! Man it'd have been extra cool if you hadn't killed Hugh last season oh well who needs cool characters than what they seem to be actually spending the season on Q bullshit .

Disco S3- less offensive than S1...but god such a weird show. Just...you have all these great actors and great sets and great CGI and...I can live with the big story ideas in S3 I don't think they're all that silly...but my god they just cannot stop making everything about Michael Burnham in the most stilted and awkward way possible. I know everyone just fires off the phrase Mary Sue any time a woman character is competent, but they dedicate so much time and energy to having every character constantly talk about how Burnham is so important to them. Just so offputting. TNG and DS9 characters were able to go an episode without remarking on their personal relationships to Picard or Sisko. Sonequa Martin-Green seems great. She'd be an amazing Trek character if they'd stop having everyone cum their pants the minute they see her, or pretending she's not a very flawed character that they should not trust or like still!

Spock-Bones came off as two extremely competent friends giving each other a hard time - it was fundamentally an interaction between equals. And neither one was perfect, they both had legitimate criticisms of each other. But in early TNG, Data was often presented with a child-like innocence of life, no matter how technically competent he was. It just felt more like watching an adult be abusive to a kid for no good reason.

It's also the difference between Spock and Data. From what I know of TOS, Spock had emotions, just repressed them, and so was able to banter with Bones. Data was unable to really express emotion, but he really wanted to learn to do so. So that kind of made it worse in my eyes.

Yeah Doctor Who is one of those shows that ranges the full spectrum of "timeless classic, great" to "what the gently caress, burning trash". Tom Baker / Sylvester McCoy or GTFO. (and honestly Sly had some WTF episodes too mixed in with the Battlefields et al)

For similar reasons DS9 has some amazing episodes and some I would never watch again.

I hated Pulaski when that show aired. It wasn't until later that I understood the nuances.

Man, I forgot about the anti-android poo poo with Pulaski. They really didn't do that well did they?

The thing is, it could have been an interesting character arc and a way to deal with actual issues of racism, bigotry, etc. in a way that you could get on 90s primetime sci-fi TV. Like, what do you do when it turns out that person you like is a bigot? Can bigots change and come around to not being bigots? What do you do when one of the people in your senior leadership is a bigot and has actual power over you? Like I'm imagining a multi-episode arc where Data straight up resigns from Starfleet over her poo poo forcing the crew to come to grips with the reality of bigotry in not only the Federation but Starfleet officers, examine their own beliefs, and then do the Star Trek thing where they fix the problem and it's all OK. Maybe Pulaski has a come to Jesus moment and changes, maybe they use it as a way to shitcan the character.

Lot of wasted potential there.

(comedy option: Data is getting poo poo on by Pulaski, wants to understand racism, Geordie walks in on him in the Holodeck doing a recreation of the classic ancient Earth drama about racism, Roots)

Just ignore them. They're effectively pointless unless you're chasing late game whale bait.

Keys don't drop, period, they're all premium store.

If you want to get into super late game theory crafting about hyper-meta bullshit there are a few lockbox items people like to pick up, but you can pick those up on the exchange. By that point, if you stick around for that kind of dumb poo poo like those of us brain damaged enough to do so, you'll already be flipping crap on the exchange and swimming in EC so it's not a huge burden.

But just for standard playing missions? You can do it all with the gear you get as drops or rewards.

If you hold onto lockboxes you can sometimes make a little EC listing them on the exchange once they stop dropping. You might as well have a stack in your inventory so you don't have to keep throwing them away.

Fidel Cuckstro
Jul 2, 2007

Aside from ships, the only other thing of note that make lockboxes sometimes good to open is particular to the Infinity lockboxes, which more or less collect all the different items in all the various lockboxes throughout the seasons, usually up to the most recent 1 or 2.

First- you can get a 'salvaged console' box x at a small but not ridiculous frequency...and I don't know how many of these can be re-sold on the exchange. Some of the consoles you can get from this box, like hull image refractors, or the delphic tear generator, are pretty highly rated for end game builds.

Second- you can get lockbox-exclusive character (space/ground) traits, and a few of these are also considered top rated for end game builds. On the plus side you definitely can buy these off the exchange. Downside is you'll pay anywhere from 10M to 200M EC for them.

Also I really wonder at this point which has been a worse business decision for the game- making a separate Klingon faction at launch, or making console versions of the game.
