Everything is microwave because of the internet. Young people have been fully trained to only care about new stuff. It's not like the 90's and early 2000's where old music got respect or albums has 2-3 years in-between and nobody complained. People have been fooled by the pumped up numbers to think sales=good (thanks 50)

Streaming and singles taking over has done it to all music. You used to have to wait for a second album to be disappointed in where your new favorite artist went. Now it takes like three weeks and they’ve got another track and it may be awful and you don’t have the rest of an album to keep people hooked or into their old vibe.

Why is hip hop music so fickle in this era? People rant and rave about a rapper, and then after a year, they disappear from the consciousness of listeners, and aren't talked about anymore. It it because they don't have major labels spending a fortune on promo and marketing? Or is it because the music isn't as good as people initially believe?

Sort of,

It's generally a mix of, the democratization of media. and recency bias the timeless stuff will last, and the other stuff won't. We just don't remember the non lasting stuff.

There are plenty of songs/musical acts that'd have a one hit wonder, or two hits and then disappear. Now factor in almost any one's ability to put their music out into the world and get it listened to, on like youtube, or any other place. If one of their songs blow up they get their moment, and people/media always want to be up on the newest poo poo, so that person gets promoted, and if they don't have more than a couple of songs in them then they fade away as it repeats with someone new

went and saw Tyler and Vince last night. Extremely good show but I missed half of Vince cause I assumed he was a higher billing than Kali Uchis. Boy was I wrong. I know I'm just old now but I didn't know a single one of her songs and the entire arena was going nuts for her.

The crowd was 60% 13 yr olds and 40% 35 yr olds. I was not expecting so many kids and their parents.

How do you not know Kali Uchis if you’re paying for a Tyler concert? They’ve both been on each other’s albums. Maybe it’s because she’s collabed with a whole bunch of people I listen to (including Tyler, Rico Nasty, The Internet, Gorillaz, and Mac Miller) but Ive been listening to her long before Telepatìa blew up. Isolation is really good vibey R&B as is the style these days (think Kehlani or SZA) but I haven’t listened to her newest album, which I think is mostly in Spanish. As for why she’s higher billed than Vince: Telepatía is a massive worldwide hit.

Speaking of “massive worldwide hits in Spanish” the new ROSALÍA album comes out Friday.

I was shocked during the Travis Scott stuff that people were taking and going with kids as young as even 7 to these shows. Never in my life would my kids be at these, yes I'm judging.

The flattening of rap is so loving wild, especially that it’s not like it’s different people. It’s Dre and Snoop, former public menaces but ope! Actually, they’re beloved now and have been for 30+ years by the current generation.

Like… am I gonna see Three 6 do the Super Bowl in a few years?

Actually now that reminds me of a question I’ve been meaning to ask I’m here: aside from English, which language sounds best when rapped? I’ve been exposed to Korean and Spanish rap through popular music and I’ve heard other languages just out of curiosity (like French or German) but I can never decide which languages actually most lend themselves to rapping.

I originally wondered this because I found a guy who is black and grew up in both NYC and Yokohama and the way he was able to blend the two languages was very cool and not something I would have expected from Japanese.

Higher Brothers (chinese group) are the first thing I thought of. I don't actively listen to them, but everything I've heard of theirs is good.

E: I'm just speaking out of my rear end on this because I don't actually know anything about rap in other languages, but the language seems to work well with rap? Their flow is very natural and the language doesn't seem to get in the way of "rap flow" at all. I was reading the comments to that video after posting it, and someone said "I didn't know this wasn't English for the longest" lol. So there's that.
