I'm not watching it. I'm already on Ukraine's side, and I don't need my day to get any worse.

No one in this thread has any control over US or NATO's decision on implementing a no fly zone over Ukraine so lets dial back the sanctimony a little bit.

I am just an IK - Not removing the imbed since it's tagged and relevant as it was shown to congress in an attempt to sway their decision. Everyone else view at your own discretion.

I don’t think it’s gratuitous, it’s not overly gory. It’s just, you know, kids being loaded in ambulances and dying in hospital and a woman being thrown in a mass grave.

It’s journalistic in a way. Just, you know, war ain’t cool. In case anyone had doubts.

As rough as that video was to watch, I think it's an effective tool to show everyone how completely loving stupid war is. In one way or another, every war in history was born from a grift, and in this case Putin hasn't been able to decide on just one grift so he is throwing them all at the board to see which one sticks.

Wasn't being sanctimonious, just stating a fact. And I know why the US can't do a no fly zone. But I think calling a video that merely showed the reality in Ukraine "gratuitous" was at a minimum crass.

Apparently the US government agreed that more needed to be done regarding anti air since they're sending a shitload over now

That's fair, no one should have to watch the video if they don't want to, especially people in this thread who've been through war. Same with any of the more graphic footage coming out. The video does serve a purpose though.

MANPADs are only effective up to ~10-15,000 feet depending on the system - the Russians would just start bombing from higher altitudes which means even more indiscriminate targeting and collateral damage.

They dropped dumb bombs on Syrian targets from 30,000 feet from Backfires and Blackjacks. They really don't give a gently caress and it seems the only PGMs they're willing to expend are cruise missiles and TBMs, which they're likely running low on.

Unfortunately this is a common tactic in Russia, so there's probably institutional motivation there to dehumanize those they are killing (a lot like the US and civilians killed in drone strikes)

Terror bombings are a common Russian tactic, sadly.

They just started getting more S-300s from other countries. Those can easily knock out high level aircraft from a significant distance.

Honest question: How low down the chain of command does information about what’s inside targeted buildings get propagated? Presumably someone knows, but is it the guy ultimately pushing the button? I’ve never been in any military, let alone the Russian one.

Already mentioned in the post above, but they're explicitly providing longer range SAMs.

The US process has you including the target and disposition (under cover, in the open). This would be called into the fire direction center, which will coordinate fires. Beyond that I'm not sure what gets passed down to the actual dudes manning the guns other than the type of ammunition and the other information they need to actually get the rounds on target.
