LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY DOG
Ideology adds a massive amount of visual diversity - different factions now have markedly different looks e.g. and your ideolgy choices affect how your own base constructions look, what you colonist hairstyles, body and/or face tattoos and clothing preferences will be, and a whole bunch of mods have greatly expanded that.

Ideology's gameplay additions are mostly about providing mechanics for intricate gimmick colonies that are very hard or tedious to deal with in the vanilla game. e.g. if you want an all nudist or all cannibal colony you can make it a feature of your colony's culture, and interacting with prisoners now has an additional layer - you can also convert them to your ideology, e.g. you can teach them that tender human flesh is in fact quite delicious, or that there really is nothing quite as good as a cool fresh breeze upon your bare taint

And again, mods have greatly expanded on all that

Getting back into this game after like half a year away. Is Ideologies as unnecessary and overpriced a DLC as it looks? It seems like I could get basically the same impact by just playing with a self-imposed conduct.

If you run a standard good person happy colony, Ideology doesn't change much other than adding some flair.

If you want to run things like tribal societies to an end game large settlement, evil bad people, vaguely evil yet otherwise good people, or have some more RP flair, then Ideology makes that possible. I can run a charity heavy raider colony with heads on spikes, but they're just from the bad people, so I'm good, actually. I can run the big good person multicultural colony that has the odd tribal people hugging the trees so little weird orange guys come out of it while the Empire forever hates me even if I'm being a good colony and releasing their prisoners, because they're xenophobic bigots.

I found Ideology to be a better buy than Royalty.

I really enjoyed how ideology has made my cave dwelling techno-utopia-wannabe nerdlingers a very valid and cohesive choice.

Give up on your weak flesh and join us in the future of consciousness. Or don't and get fed to the techno-cow to be processed into nutrient gruel, your choice.

There's lots of fun additional memes for ideology to download too. The choices for your religion are called memes for some reason.

Maybe they are eating people just for the lols I guess?

Ideology is great because it lets me make a nice person ideology and justify me taking in all the charity cases and giving medicine to beggars with 'see my ideology says I have to or else I get mood debuffs' instead of the real reason, which is 'being mean to fake people makes me sad'.

I'm glad I don't have "must do charity" on this time around. Just had a 48 refugee quest come up, ain't nobody got space for that

The Healthcare meme from VE is awesome, and I wish I could accept patients from friendly factions in exchange for silver or relations bonuses.

48 refugees can clearcut a forest and *make* space.

Now food, food might be a problem.

Related: making 48 beds would kind of suck, it would be really nice to build 24 beds and have them cycle shifts. Is there a mod that'll avoid specific owners being assigned to beds, so you can hot-bunk? Would be kind of cool to have an "optimized" first/second/third shift for lower-level pawns or refugees, and you'd get to save some building materials/space.

you get refugee quests of that size at very high colony wealth values, high enough that map space is probably at a premium

then one of the little shits will get eaten by a bear or something and everyone will turn hostile

I'm afraid so.
I love refugee quests. They only need a barracks and a paste dispenser, and all the hauling/cleaning/stone cutting tasks just evaporate before your eyes. It’s also fun to work around all their goofy terrible personalities that would never be admitted as full-time colonists but are just funny as temporary guys. I always take refugees.

If I’m rich enough I like to give them all a fresh clean set of clothes before they go.

The only beef I have with the healthcare meme is that the nurse is required from the start, and it takes a pawn off the table labor-wise

it's also weird that medical specialists give a good thought when they tend people, but nurses do not

Oh, I've got an AI colony manager that marks every living thing for hunting the second it arrives on the map that's not a problem

It's not so much the space, I just don't feel like dealing with the food, I'm actually running short til the new fields get a harvest in. With project rimfactory construction drones it'd literally take about 3 in game hours to whip up a 48 person barrack

I think I've gotten to a point where it's becoming unfun to try and defend my colony from the harder and harder waves of enemies, which is a bummer. Is there a way to change the game settings to be more chill? I don't want 40 ravenous bears coming to break down my doors and stuff

Reduce the difficulty or use the raid limiter mod. The mod lets you tweak all sorts of poo poo like the colony wealth multiplier, colonist modifier, or just flat out say like "no more than 100 raid points per colonist"

Another option is to try switching your storyteller to Randy if that's not who you're using, my understanding is that he might still send 40 ravenous bears at you, but only because he feels like it and not because he's ramping stuff up to push you into escaping like the others do

Both Cassandra and Phoebe are outright trying to kill you, Phoebe just does it less often. Randy is the way to go.

This, randy random is the true rimworld way to play. Might be 10 drop pod assaults in a single day, might be 10 infestations, might be both, might be 10 animals drop podding out of the sky, might be mechanoid invasion.

In either the game settings or maybe through a button on the Storyteller Selection screen, there’s a Storyteller Settings option which will allow you to do precisely this by adjusting a slider: all the same threat options, but at some percentage of the intensity.

yeah it's in the storyteller screen, you can change all that mid game but certain things like Phoebe/Cassandra escalation are partly handled internally; if you just want to sustain a long game without the escalation you should switch to Randy.

You can also try a modded storyteller depending on how you wish to play. I like to use the same story teller unless I want to switch focus of the save then I switch the story teller.

Some people switch it constant depending on what their immediate needs and goals are. Do what you find fun.

Randy Random is great, but one thing people don't mention that I recommend is playing with the difficulty one tick lower than you otherwise would while you get used to how he can just sucker punch you with bullshit events you've got no idea how to deal with. (Once upon a time, I thought nuclear fallout was an inescapable death sentence. Now it's just an excuse to have everyone inside and working on arts and crafts for a while.)

At my girlfriend's suggestion, the first ideology I'm trying is feminine ravagers. Refreshed a couple of times until I got one with manageable memes, and it's been working okay so far. The not minding corpses thing is honestly really nice, and planting skull spikes everywhere is sick as hell.

Is there an ideology randomizer for starting? I kinda move my mouse around and pick one sometimes and just go with whatever it is and lean in hard. Well it says I'm an organ harvesting cult so let's capture everyone and sell their organs back to their friends.

Oh high life? Okay time to lean hard on hospitality mod and become that place everyone goes to do legal drugs.

Best I found for that was a fluid start and then as the option for ideology change comes up roll with whatever story has been happening. Bob the crack addict joined and keeps snapping? High life for me. We took shelter in a cave and got two infestations in a year? Ah screw the sun, mushrooms and bug meat for everyone.

I keep on accidentally ending up with all or 95% female colonies, next time I might as well codify it.

Nomad meme from VE has added a great new dimension for me. It forces you to keep moving bases or suffer heinous mood debuffs. Early on you can mitigate it just by sending them on brief caravans, but it gets serious before a year is up. With Raider on top of that I just move into a ready made neighboring enemy base. Fix it up for my needs, research as hard as I can, then tear everything down and do it again. Food has become a significant factor again, too, and I have to jump at every hunting and farming outpost that I spot. Really adds new challenges.

One thing that gets me about the VE memes is that they didn't lock most of the precepts to their associated meme, so you can just grab the +1 to all crafting qualities or faster immunity gain or whatever for free with none of the downsides you're supposed to have. I can't tell if it was deliberate or negligence, since a couple of them are actually locked.
