Yosef ‘Yossi’ Azimov
06-10-1990

The car carrying Yossi approached a cargo loading ramp at Ben Gurion Airport. Yossi noticed the C-2 Greyhound that was expected to transport him to the Theodore Roosevelt was still loading its freight. The loadmasters and a few other personnel were busy filling the hold of the plane with several crates of olive oil. A fuckton of olive oil. Yossi wondered how many the crew of this ship must number to require such an amount of olive oil. He knew the American supercarriers were huge but still, this was excessive. His vehicle stopped before he could ponder more on the subject.

He hopped off the airport security vehicle and grabbed his personal luggage along with his diplomatic bag. He triple-checked this satchel was still latched and secured on his person. “You must be the Israeli diplomat flying with us today.” One of the pilots had come over to greet him. He was a short and portly man of Asian descent. “I’m ‘DONUT’, I’ll be your pilot today.” Yossi responded “Hello, I am Yossi…Donut? How did you get that callsign?”. His copilot had quickly joined the conversation and replied “‘Cus he eats them by the dozen. I’ll be riding shotgun today, you can call me BATTY.” Before Yossi could inquire about this aviator’s label he had briskly walked away, seemingly to assist the loadmasters in ensuring the cargo of Israeli olive oil was properly loaded and secured.

The Mossad agent then asked DONUT “Why so much olive oil? Is it well liked by the crew?” DONUT replied “The boys on the Big Stick just love the stuff! Can’t get enough of it.” “Big stick?”, Yossi confusingly asked. “The carrier, ‘Talk softly and carry a big loving stick’, you know?” Yossi did, in fact, not know.

On the flight over the Mediterranean towards CVN-71, Yossi could hear the pilots talking over the cargo plane’s intercom. BATTY had asked DONUT “Retirement huh? What do you think you’ll do after this?” “It might sound crazy but I’ve always seen myself getting into politics.” BATTY laughed, “That is nuts, but hey you never know. If you ever run for president you got my vote.”

The Greyhound had finally reached the carrier. Yossi had never been on a plane that landed on a boat before. He marveled at the ship below as they flew abeam the Nimitz-class carrier. He was familiar with photos of these sorts of ships, but their size could not be understood from these alone. It seemed too soon before they were slamming into the deck and being stopped almost instantly by an arresting wire. “THAT BETTER BE GRADED PERFECT, GODDAMNIT!” DONUT roared as he eased off the throttles.

Soon Yossi was being ushered below deck. The carrier’s crew were screaming over the sound of a busy flight deck “WATCH WHERE YOU WALK! WATCH YOUR HEAD!”. The ‘Big Stick’ was clearly busy, but the flight deck crew were still able to find time to furiously unload the latest shipment of olive oil.

Yossi was escorted down corridors and stairs. The man entrusted to lead him to his destination moved so quickly. “First time on a carrier?” The sailor smirked. It was clear his charge had no clue where he was in the belly of this beast. Yossi replied with a simple “Yes.” “Think you could find your way out?” “No, I’m fairly certain I could not.” The sailor smiled and snorted, “You’ll figure it out quickly if you ever end visiting us again.” Soon Yossi found himself in a small meeting room. He opened his satchel and quickly looked over the document and photo he had brought with him. The memorandum read as such:

“Mossad has confirmed with absolute certainty that the bulk carrier AL HAMED(‘Handy Wind’) is transporting several Silkworm missiles from China. Mossad believes it picked up its cargo in Nampo, North Korea. The ship’s destination is Lebanon, where it will likely beef up the ASM defenses of Lebanon and Syria. It is almost certain these missiles will be used in an attack against the United States Navy.

If the United States decides to take action against the ‘Handy Wind’, please use discretion. We are already dealing with a catastrophe where some Kfir pilot decided to make himself an ace in a day with 35 kills from one missile. The Soviets and the UNSC are already both trying to derail our offensive. Thus, we request you be doubly sure of your target. The sea along the Levant is very busy and there are certain to be several bulk carriers in the vicinity of the ‘Handy Wind’. It is currently located south of the island of Cyprus, between Beirut and the island. Please see the attached photos and map for more information.”

OOC: Unless the USN becomes fully involved in the Israeli offensive, intel will have to be passed between the two through Mossad. Yossi will be the contact.

Gorbachev has issued a statement: The Soviet Union condemns the blatant slaughter of Soviet civilians by Israeli forces over the skies of a nation at which they were not even technically at war. We strongly recommend that President Dukkakis of the United States withdraw the carrier group from the Mediterranean who's presence we are currently observing.

The shooting down of the civilian airliner by the undisciplined sky-bandits of the Israeli Air Force is being treated as if performed by a client state. We are not intervening in the affairs of your nation, and wish that you would extend that courtesy to your neighbors as well by not bombing them. We reserve the right to send volunteers and material to Syria in support of our allies in light of this tragic and easily avoidable incident.

The United States would be wise to deescalate rather than participate in the Israeli barbarism. We hope you make the right choice, and return home.

CODEWORDS - Because you people fuckin love 'em.

BEACH - Head West to the beach - CAP has poo poo the bed, time to go, hostiles inbound.

TOURIST - Neutral Air Liner wandered into our AO. Don't loving shoot it.

VOLLEYBALL - SAM has fired on you and you need everyone to know before they get jumped by it too.

SAND CASTLE - You've thoroughly trashed your AO. For example "Panda is SAND CASTLE."

WET DIAPER - Your wingman ditched in the Sea of Galillee. We'll dispatch the Inland Navy.

This is info primarily for our strike flights and relates to MatzoMaker, the GroundBattleManager. Frequency 262.00.

We (SlingShot, Elendil, Kilonum, ATC and me) use a program called LOTATC. It gives us a lot of information on where you are, your heading, speed, etc. We get limited intel on enemy air units, think radar return. Ground stuff though is tougher.

This is basically what MatzoMaker sees. We can add icons if you report poo poo, but unless you give us LatLon it'll be "the blue porta-potty about 1nm west of that lake".

So Goon McGoonie is Flight Lead in an A-4 and requests a bearing to target area. They ask for a soft skinned target at Tiger. I can drag a line and give you bearing and distance. I'm not going to say, just north of that lake, because it may not exist on your view. So for example I'd respond "Target bearing 078 degrees at 12 nautical miles."

If you overfly and head towards that big circle, which is SAM cover, I'll give you a quick "McGoonie, break south, approaching SAM cover".

At any point you can request a vector to target area. But you have to identify targets, we have no idea what exists.
At any point you can relay intel about targets or provide BDA. We can mark up the map and keep things updated.
At any point you can request a vector home, or into friendly air cover.

If you see a target, and can ballpark us a distance, we can estimate if it's hostiles or friendly armor. For example "I see armor at 245 degrees, about 3nm out. Confirm Hostile?" I can check vector and respond "Negative target, it's friendly. Hostile armor at 265 degrees, 5 nm out."

One last point, rotary. It will likely be present. You may shoot at it, but don't go ripping your wings off to chase a helo.

EDIT : :catdrugs: There was a big DCS patch, you should really download it today and not 10 minutes before the mission. (Thanks for the reminder Breaky!)

The undisciplined sky-bandits of the Israeli Air Force

DAY 1 (PM) BRIEFING

10 June 1990, Noon
Ramat David IAF Base

Single Element
Dodge 1-1: Prime
Dodge 1-2: Gronank
Dodge 1-3: SoapyTarantula

Ok flight, it's our second sortie of the day, anyone claiming to have seen me die in a fiery ball this morning while flying casually over an enemy airbase, be aware that you are spreading misinformation during a time of war. I do not need to remind you of the consequences.
Since my resur- since this morning, you may have seen that sonnovabitch lawyer trying to crawl up our arses over the shoot down of the Georgian airliner, do not let his threats concern you. If he wanted to help the war effort he would be sorting by parking fines like a good boy, not distracting with this.

Be aware of Yoopers general briefing below, and note that we can still expect some amount of 'civilian' air. If neutral air is present, the codeword is "TOURIST" , any doubt on your target call to myself or our ABM SLINGSHOT.

Dodge 1/2 are up first, I expect we'll be behind 2 due to our startup time.

Once departed, we'll burn to 42,000ft and bring the speed down to m~0.7; aim to stay high to extend loiter time, and give your 530's the best advantage should we be called upon.

As a three ship we'll be operating as a single element again, 2 you cover me, 3 covers 2 - try to maintain visual on your wingman at all times, tell them (including myself) if they are making it impossible to follow.

When we hit our CAP point, we'll go trail formation with 5nm separation, or as long as you can maintain visual on your wingman. The goal is to always have a radar pointing in easterly direction.

Key learning from this morning; unless you're merged or over known SAM territory, do not immediately react to RWR launch warnings. Take a moment, consider if the launch could be at another flight - but if in doubt, call defensive and go defensive.

As this is the second sortie of the day and Gronank has 4 in the bag from this morning, we may be witnessing an ace in the day. While no effort is needed to feed the beast, until Ace status is achieved, Gronank will have priority on shooter - should the situation allow.

ARMAMENT
Our loadout is 2x Matra Magic, 2x Matra Super 530's, 2x Magic 2's, 1x fuel tank.

CONFIGURATION
Again, as we are flying Kfir's, remember we do not have a missile warning system nor data-link available.

Ground crew have been modifying our radars and have advised we must now manual set our frequency to prevent overlap.

- Dodge 1-1 freq: 11
- Dodge 1-2 freq: 21
- Dodge 1-3 freq: 31

COMMS PLAN
Green Radio will be for our flight comms on 137.00 MHz. Red Radio is for package comms, Ch 1 is Ramat David tower (260), Ch2 is Slingshot ABM (261), Ch3 is Package Comms (262). Once we take-off, expect to switch ch2 on red until we're ready for landing.

AOB

Commander's Briefing Post

Panther Squadron Commander 101st IAF "gently caress SNEEP"

PANTHER FLIGHTS BRIEFING
All 3 PANTHER flights have the same flight plan except targeting different areas. See the commander's post above as that is what we will be following.

PANTHER 1 - Llama
PANTHER 2 - Panda
PANTHER 3 - Tiger

Our priority for the mission is to destroy as many tanks as possible with AGM-65 Mavericks, while using our other two A-G stations for Mk-82s or Mk-84s to destroy anything with less armor. We are allowed to rearm and refuel at Ramat David, so that means we can fit as many sorties in before they ground us :getin:. Looking at the threat map, it looks like we may be able to use altitude to our advantage for this mission. Try to stay high above the targets so their AAA can't shoot you down, and if you're a badass be sure to target those units with your dumb bombs.

We will initially fly out with our flights to our AOs, but once we've started our strikes just RTB as soon as you drop all of your ordnance, and make best possible speed. Our ATC will be having a hell of a time at Ramat David juggling all of these inbound ships so be sure to call in once you are within visual range and listen to their instructions for what runway to land on. Please don't go landing on a runway without clearance. Do the same with taking off once you have rearmed, and make best speed back to your flights AO.

Study the maps and make sure you are not going to overfly those SAM bubbles during your passes! Try to stay within Israeli airspace and it's a safe place.

Pro-tip: Use your Maverick's sensor as a poor-man's TGP to help identify targets, especially tanks.

Recommended Loadout:
Center fuel tank, 2xAIM-9L, 4xAGM-65D, 2xMk-84s or 2xMk-82s (pilots choice!)

I'll see you on the tarmac!

Dodge 2-2: Karrick

Element 2:
Dodge 2-3: Zephirum
Dodge 2-4: Tythas

Welcome back to Israel, pilots -- hope we all got in some SERE practice in on our long, hot trudge back to the border. But the day's not over yet.

We're flying top cover for an armored offensive along the Golan Heights -- the boys in the Vipers and Skyhawks are gonna wreck some tanks while we swat any Syrian MiG that tries to look at them the wrong way. We'll be covering the southeast quadrant of the AO while Dodge 1 takes the northeast, with us hovering around angels 20 while the Kfirs peer over us at angels 42.

The primary threat vector will be from Al Dumayr Military Airport, northeast of Damascus. Every Flogger driver in Syria is probably emboldened from ruining the F-15's perfect record this morning, but we're gonna show them why you do not gently caress with the Eagle. We're just a short hop away from Ramat David for re-arm, so be liberal with the afterburner and ordnance in your engagements.

One last thing -- under absolutely no circumstances should your wings become detached from your airframe. It feels weird that I have to say this. Dismissed.

WP1: Ramat David
WP2: East of Sea of Galilee
WP3: South of Israeli armor
WP4: SE end of patrol zone
WP5: NW end of patrol zone
WP6: CRASH - Rosh Pina Airport, emergency landing point
WP7: Al Dumayr Military Airport, likely threat vector

AERIAL THREAT ASSESSMENT

Expect the same mix of Syrian fighters in the air as there was this morning, and consult the previous briefing for tips.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

As with this morning, you are weapons free on all SAAF craft. However, there may possibly be civilian aircraft in the AO, so verify your targets visually or through Sling Shot before launching.

ARMAMENT

4x AIM-9M, 4x AIM-7MH Sparrow, 2x fuel tanks. Spoiler: this will be our loadout for probably every mission.

COLT 1/2 FLIGHT PLAN

Colt Intraflight: 133.00

Ramat David Tower: 260.00
ABM (Sling Shot): 261.00
Package Comms (Matzo Maker): 262.00

Planned loadout to be 1 TER of 3 Zuni pods on station 3, 2 TERs of 2 Zuni pods on stations 2 and 4, and 2 Zuni pods on stations 1 and 5. At pilot discretion either or both Zuni pods on 1/5 may be replaced with either AIM-9P5 or AGM-45A Shrike missiles for self defense against air or SAM/AAA threats.

The flight plans for Colt 1 and 2 are as above. After takeoff and formup, we will ingress at medium altitude, between 6000 to 10000 feet depending on visibility. As we approach objective PANDA our plan will be to strike any targets found with Zunis in dive attacks; the recommended parameters are 30 degree dive, 380 knots and 5000ft AGL with sight depression at zero, or 20 degree dive, 375 knots and 4500ft AGL with sight depression at 5. Diving lower is discouraged due to the AAA threat, but if the air defenses are offline, distracted or otherwise not a factor pilots may conduct passes with their desired parameters. Once you are Winchester on Zunis, conduct gun passes if there is no AAA threat but do not RTB until your entire flight is Winchester; stick together as a group.

Once PANDA has been hit we will shift to TIGER or LLAMA as appropriate and attack targets there in the same manner. If you wish to request a vector or report intel to Sling Shot, remember that your A/G radar range mode is effective to 7.5 nm. Simply enter a 10 degree dive while pointing your sight at the unit and it'll give you the slant range to that point, which hopefully will help cue Sling Shot.

Devil 1-3: Snax
Devil 1-4: Volundr

TASK:

Alright kids, our Israeli friends have gone and kicked over the entire anthill so it looks like this is going to be a working vacation. The Syrian government has taken it upon themselves to threaten a United States Navy aircraft carrier with silkworm missiles, so we're going to go kick their teeth in and break their toys.

Our Navy friends will be taking care of hitting the actual silkworm launchers, so our task will be to give them the space to operate by eliminating two coastal SA-6 sites covering the launchers. Lead element will be responsible for destruction of the SA-6 site, codenamed MAMA BEAR, co-located with our primary objective. Trail element will be targeting the northern site, codenamed PAPA BEAR.

FLIGHT PLAN AND TARGETING:

We will be leaving the carrier along the same flight path as we left for our cruise yesterday and climb to 25,000ft on the way to waypoint 1, where we will turn in toward our target at Tyre and continue climbing to 35,000. At waypoint 2 the two elements will split and head toward their respective targets.

Minimum mission success criteria will be the destruction and/or suppression of SA-6 sites at PAPA BEAR and MAMA BEAR. Lead element will also be targeting a local AAA vehicle protecting the silkworm site. Completion of these objectives will be announced with codeword GOLDILOCKS.

Once GOLDILOCKS is announced trail element will change focus to suppressing BABY BEAR with any remaining munitions; lead element will assist with any cleanup needed at the primary objective.

We have intel that a freighter carrying additional silkworm missiles is currently off the Syrian coast, we have a tertiary objective of locating this freighter should time and fuel allow.

ROE:
Identify all targets before firing, don't be like those clowns who shot down an airliner yesterday. You are fully cleared to engage any Syrian forces that threaten our aircraft or mission, but do not strike targets unnecessary to mission completion. Our goal is to remove the threat to the fleet with a little escalation as possible

MINIMUM ALT: Stay above 26,000ft while within threat ring of an SA-6 site.

The Soviet Union hereby announces a live-fire exercise off the coast of Syria commencing in the future. Exclusion coordinates and time of exercise will be announced well-before. Air, Naval, and Subnautical assets will participate in the destruction of a series of decommisioned bulk carriers in the exact formation adopted by the United States carrier group currently off Israel's coast. It is a common formation amongst all ships worldwide, and its adoption is coincidential.

You missed the Mig pilot punching out right after to continue the fight in the parachutes.

Good evening. I am Seren "wonkotron", squadron XO, and I am taking direct command of Panther flights going forward.

Tactical simulations reveal significant risks to squadron flights should BARCAP become task saturated or is defeated, so slight modifications to Commander Sneep's plan are as follows:

Mission Loadout
PANTHER 1 & 2 - 2x AIM9-M, 6x AGM-65, centerline tank, remove unnecessary pylons for optimal aerodynamics
PANTHER 3 - 6x AIM9-M, centerline tank

Sortie 1 Taskings
PANTHER 1: Llama
PANTHER 2-1: Panda
PANTHER 2-3: Tiger
PANTHER 3-1: TARCAP

Sortie 2 Taskings
PANTHER 1-1: Llama
PANTHER 1-3: Panda
PANTHER 2-1: Panda
PANTHER 2-3: Tiger
PANTHER 3-1: TARCAP

NOTES:
  • I will command from Panther 3-1 as PANTHER ACTUAL, but will be hands off once we pass the Sea of Galilee (STPT 2).
  • Flight leads have full authority of their flight past STPT 2 with the exception of withdrawal orders. Report when your flight is RTB to PANTHER ACTUAL and we will regroup for a possible second sortie at Ramat David.
  • Conditions for immediate withdrawal to STPT 2:
    1. BEACH call from MATZO MAKER on 262
    2. SCAREDY CAT call from PANTHER ACTUAL on 262
  • In the event of BEACH or SCAREDY CAT, egress low and fast to STPT 2 then regroup with your flight lead and await command from PANTHER ACTUAL to resume attack.
  • The plan of attack for PANTHER 3 is to sweep the AO ahead of the strikers to draw out any hostiles in the immediate vicinity, then orbit for TARCAP.
  • If TARCAP becomes overwhelmed, but BEACH has not been called then I will call SCAREDY CAT.
  • TARCAP will stay in the fight to cover any SCAREDY CAT or BEACH withdrawals until PANTHER and/or COLT strikers are safely away from the AO.
  • Flight Leads: If enemy aircraft are within 10 miles of any of your guys, call PANTHER ACTUAL for backup and take your flight toward STPT 2 immediately
  • If PANTHER 3 is destroyed, flight leads are to dump A2G ordinance, provide ESCORT for their flights, and continue the strike mission if possible.

My door is open. Come to me ASAP with any questions or concerns with this plan. (ooc: discuss in the discord thread)

The prognosis
is not good.

Note that we expect the majority of TARCAP to be engaging strike aircraft not enemy fighters. Dodge should be knocking the migs down, Panther will be handling the Fitters and Hinds as they cause problems. (don't die chasing helos)

Last day before intermission this saturday.
We will be instituting some changes from here on out.

First is the schedule. Since we use morning and afternoon as the game times lorewise, we will be using 2 on, 1 off schedule. That means we play morning, then afternoon, then we have the break. It will better conform to the game schedule.

Other changes:

-F10 map for friendlies. It will show all friendlies for all BLUFOR players. Hopefully our cohesion improves and those with more navigational issues find their wingmen better.
-Labels for air and ground units bigger and farther. These will also show red and blue for coalition, and be visible farther out. Should make finding ground targets far easier.
-SyAF austerity. The Syrian Air Force had a sudden austerity trigger, which means they will temporarily have a lot of difficulties getting any significant amount of planes up.

Update for folks, Panther 3 is now TARCAP. You will be in Slingshots capable hands. You are to remain in, or very near to, the Panther target AO.

Strikers, please verify targets as best possible. I know a tank is just a big green box you put missiles into, but please make sure it's a Syrian tank and not an Israeli tank. Reminder, our maps are based on best intel, and are not necessarily 100% accurate to the situation on the ground. In between our coordination and ops time units may have shifted slightly.

Panther 2

Day 1 PM AAR
Operation: CONVERGENCE
Ramat David IAF Base

Two Element Strike Flight

Element 1:
Panther 2-1: Jazzahn
Panther 2-2: Deadseed

Element 2:
Panther 2-3: KMazz
Panther 2-4: Bear.is.flying

Summary
Panther 2 departure for hop 1 was delayed due to a flight computer issue in Panther 2-3's F-16. Once resolved, Panther 2 was able to enter the AO and Element 1 began attack runs on enemy armor around PANDA, and Element 2 attacked armor around TIGER. Panther 2-3 was damaged on the first run in, and was forced to ditch in Israeli territory after fuel leaks. Panther 2-2 also was damaged by enemy AAA fire and had to ditch in an olive grove on the approach end of CRASH. Panther 2-1 and 2-4 expended their Mavericks into enemy armor positions and began egress from the AO. Panther 2-4 was engaged by a Syrian Mig-23 and merged resulting in an air to air guns kill by 2-4.

After Panther 2 RTB, we rearmed and re-entered the AO where in 2-1 and 2-4 split to target PANDA and TIGER respectively. Both elements expended their Mavericks with good effect, destroying a dozen enemy armored vehicles in the process. 2-1 called winchester and formed on 2-4 while they completed their attack runs. Panther 2 reformed and returned to Ramat David.

Kills
* MIG-23 - 1x
* T-72 - 8x
* BTR-80 - 4x
* BMP-2 - 3x
* ZU-53 - 2x
* T-55 - 5x

Losses
* Panther 2-2 (Ditched)
* Panther 2-3 (Ditched)

Lessons Learned
Our SA and unit cohesion wasn't great, and that resulted in losses. Our stand off capability should be utilized when making attack runs to ensure a safe ingress and egress from AAA fire.

Panther 2-4 - Bear.is.flying - Great job destroying an entire armored battalion on your own AND getting an A2A victory
