This reminds me of freshman english class, when we read Lord of the Flies and one kid asked if it was based on the Simpsons episode, except Ray Jay of course has far more cultural importance

The only time I'd ever seen or heard of this Johnson guy before the simpsons was from a guest appearance on a late-night rerun of an old variety show from the 80s called Bizarre. He came on, did his whole bit, even got a little chuckle from me when he launched into the whole speech for the fourth time. I had always assumed that it was a character created for that one sketch on that one episode of that obscure Canadian television series. How the gently caress would I ever think that guy had a whole career doing that? Especially when Super Dave Osborne got his start there, he's way more famous

Why did people think RRJ was funny? I assume lead exposure is to blame

The comedy came from the ridiculous repetition and how lame it was. First I saw of him was on the Gong Show, where he got to do the whole bit. It was a "wtf is this?" kind of laughter. Something so stupid you had to laugh at it.

I suspect it's for the same reason people found this funny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAVUFKYdJNY Or the third or so time Leslie Nielson says "good luck we're all counting on you" in Airplane. At a certain point the repetition itself is the joke more than the joke itself.
