My dream was certainly always to log into a BBS and have it be as quick as me running my WWIV board locally. I think in some ways that was actually slower than it would load now

I imagine it would take about ten seconds to download my whole files section if not for the keystrokes needed (and only that long because I had a CD of Demoscene tracks as part of my file area)

We have no landline anymore, but VOIP and our old landline number came free with our cable internet.
I checked, calling from the Netherlands via VOIP to a fixed phone number in the USA is in the order of EUR 0,15 to 0,20 per minute. Totally doable.

So in theory i could hook up a modem to my old 386, plug it into the internet modem's phone jack, and BBS away.

I knew a guy who was apparently trying to be the most polite BBS user around; he would dial in, type /a /o, and that was that. I will not explain.

(in WWIV, /a lists all new posts without page scrolling pauses, and /o logs off with no confirmation prompt)

If he had been calling from Europe that behavior would have actually made perfect sense and made keeping up on things vaguely workable. Total connection time: like 15 seconds!

Oh goodness, it's the old square tank mouse. Back when I still had my old Amiga 2000, I had slighly more modern, rounded mouse. Not even near the top of the list of awful things about war, but relevant to this thread I think, a retro computer museum in Ukraine likely has been destroyed.

quote:

Russia's War In Ukraine Results In Bombing of Retro Computer Museum

The Club 8-Bit museum in Mariupol housed over a 120 retro computing devices, including some old-school Apple and Atari hardware, along with Soviet-era computers.

Earlier this week, the owner of the Club 8-Bit museum in Mariupol, Ukraine, reported the news on a Facebook page. “That's it, the Mariupol computer museum is no longer there,” wrote Dmitry Cherepanov.

On Facebook, Cherepanov told PCMag: "I only have information that the museum area was bombed." He evacuated from the city on March 15th.

[...]

Cherepanov had spent over 15 years collecting the hardware, which also included an Apple IIc computer, Compaq Portable III, an Atari 400, and many Soviet-era computers from the 1980s and 1990s. “In total, more than 500 exhibits of the IT sphere from the 1950s to the early 2000s” were located at the museum, according to Club 8-Bit’s website.

On one hand this topic feels too big for a post here, but on the other I doubt there will be many takers, so I will risk it

People who actually lived in big metro areas where you did not have to call long distance to reach more than a handful of BBSs, what was that experience like? I immediately envision factions forming where different sets of BBSs were seen as the "good ones" despite on the surface being little different than others, kind of like your hometown having one good and one evil Denny's (insert equivalent restaurant reference for non-U.S. BBSers). Or was it like you just tried to stay current (in message boards, file downloads, or door games) on as many boards as you physically had time for?

I ask since even in the heyday in my small metro area, though we had probably 20 active boards, only about 4 or 5 had either active/interesting message forums, file areas, or the "good" games that attracted enough players to keep things interesting (Trade Wars, Solar/Barren Realms Elite, Legend of the Red Dragon, Global Wars, Chess, the Pit, Pimp Wars, and Operation: Overkill II primarily come to mind), so you could be done with your daily posts/turns in an hour or two easily. Imagining what it would have been like if there had been hundreds of choices instead is kind of challenging honestly.

Imagining what it would have been like if there had been hundreds of choices instead is kind of challenging honestly.

I grew up in the suburbs of a major American city, and there were hundreds of BBSes on the local listing -- here's a historical one from the area, circa 1990. I remember calling at least a few of these. For many BBSes, their name on this list was their only advertisement to the (local) world.

Now, I can't claim any sort of broad knowledge here. I was just a teenage kid, dialing up boards blind to see what they were. Many boards had generic lovely names like "[Town Name] File Exchange" or "West Suburban Connect", and were about as interesting as you'd think. So I tended to try the boards with stranger sounding names, which is how I ended up as a regular on the local neopagan boards, despite being a pretty thorough skeptic of these things. I was never aware of any sort of large-scale rivalry or cliques or factions among boards, apart from the occasional spat between individual sysops. I gradually got a sense of the politics in that community. But I never got any impression like "the Northville Door Game BBS sucks rear end!"

For whatever it's worth, about 75% of the friends and professional contacts I've made over the years can be traced back to those old BBSes, via friends of friends and such. The other 25% trace back to a Halloween party I tagged along to on a lark in 2010.

e: I suppose it was a bit like the world of today. No one can possibly keep up with every online community, so you find your niche and stay in it. And thirty years ago, no one could keep up with hundreds of local BBSes, so you found the ones that mattered to you and followed those.
