440xi Gran Coupe M Performance.

I wanted a 4 door AWD sedan with a liftgate in the style of the S5 and the S7. I looked at the S5 originally but it didn't feel different enough from the S4 plus the twin turbo V8 in the S7 was very enticing. So then I started shopping around for S7's and it turns out that they depreciate so fast that you could pick up 2 year lease returns for pennies on the dollar. A 2 year old car is still brand new no matter how much you beat on it (especially around here).

So I was shopping around S7's trying to find one with the packages I want when a friend of mine turned me onto this BMW. It was a 4 door AWD sedan with a liftgate like I wanted, it didn't have as much power as the S7, but BMW specific ODB tools are much easier to acquire than anything made by VAG and the power that can be achieved with an intercooler and tune would put there close enough that it wouldn't make a difference. But the biggest selling point was that it was an M Performance edition. BMW only makes about 500 2, 3, 4 series a year as M Performance cars and to find one that was also an x drive gran coupe was probably even rarer.

Ha, the 440i GC was one I dailied for a few weeks when I was trying to make my mind up, not the xDrive or M Performance though. It's a sweet ride but something about it just didn't gel with me, maybe because it was RWD it didn't feel quite as planted on the road. That twin scroll straight six is an absolute peach of an engine though.

It's also sort of replacing the MX5 as the go to cheap trackaday car in the stockish Time Attacker classes as it doesn't require a roll bar. The ND has a better suspension design though.

It's good on gas, reliable, and can fit 4 17-18" tires and a jack with the seats folded down. Easy to drive and park too (it's actually smaller than my S13 240SX).

Please explain this lease policy. I'd love to go EV through a tax break. Can you buy it at the end for a decent price?

So a lease means I give it back after 3 years, no option to buy it. Salary sacrifice is a thing done through a lot of workplaces here in the UK where your work has arranged a deal where you can use part of your pre-tax salary to pay for things monthly. It's very popular with buying bikes (technically for commuting) but recently places have started doing it for EVs too. The lease I have has insurance, servicing and all the extras lumped in free as well so essentially I don't have to worry about anything except paying the flat rate out of my gross pay. On top of that, splitting the cost 50/50 with my girlfriend means it's very affordable.

The modern M cars are too far up their own rear end. I liked them better when they were basically sleeper cars that were a badge and a small trim piece away from being the standard 3/5-series. The modern ones call so much attention to themselves with the bulging hoods and stripes everywhere and the constant obnoxious loud overrun noises they make. gently caress that.

Sudden Loud Noise posted:

They only very recently brought the CTS-V Blackwing to Canada. But if it was an option at the time I would've put it on my shortlist.

There's no purchase option in your lease? That's a bummer, my Golf lease just ended and I'm buying it because the payoff is comically low compared to what the car is worth.

This. My first 2 cars were RX-7's.

The first one was an FB and the rust was so bad that the rear suspension collapsed and the driveshaft would rub against the body. Still it was so much fun to drive that I bought an FC with an engine so shot I had to pull the bottom plugs and pour in a spoonful of oil just to get it to start. I thought it was the apex seals because lol rotary but when I finally pulled it apart the housings and rear irons had massive gouges in them and at that point it was new engine time so I dumped it for cheap.

We don’t get the 1 series anymore in the US and a 3 series felt really big when I last sat in one. I’d be coming from a wrecked 86, so that’s the size of car I’m used to.

It is very sad that every single new EV coming out in North America over the next two years is either a truck or a crossover.

Yeah, I get that. It's a nice car to drive and the engine is top notch, but (in my case anyways) between the CF front splitter crashing against every slight bump in the road and the very heavy steering with what feels like short travel suspension I don't feel as comfortable in this as I did my old A4. I find I worry much more about if I'm damaging the car than I ever did in my Audi.
