Yeah, this was pretty much established as the general thread consensus couple of pages ago I believe.

Unfortunately we're all lazy so the sun is still there. Mocking us. As we obviously nothing.

not a terrible graph as much as just general innumeracy:

228 million people with driver's licenses in the USA
15 gallon average gas tank size
$4.25/gal average price today

the answer is 0.01 tanks of gas per person

If you work in a windowless environment, not seeing the sun during any of your waking hours can have a real adverse effect on your mental health, even for people without SAD or something similar.

I worked on a dairy packing fridge/freezer plant for a bit doing 6-6 (and 6-6) shifts. It was really hosed. Sometimes you wouldn't see the sun for days at a time, and other times it felt like the sun was blazing for a week straight.

I was young and marginally stupider than I am now and fell asleep at a traffic light on the way home once and vowed to never do another stupid shift job again*

* Lol of course I did, but to my knowledge I haven't died.

Utah I get, but why is the bible belt so dry?

MrUnderbridge
Jun 25, 2011

They're dry. As in a lot of counties literally do not allow the sale of alcohol.

Because Bible.

Usually there's a county nearby that for some reason or other has alcohol sales right by the county line.

I lived in Texas when they had dry counties and you had to cross the county line to get beer.

So Billy Bob won't allow it sold in his county, because they are upstanding Baptists. But, you know boys will be boys, so they have to have somewhere nearby.

Similar to the Chicken Ranch situation. My friends hometown was right next to La Grange, and there was always condemnation by the locals of the sinning so close to home. Meanwhile, their pickups were regularly seen parked outside.

Well don't you know I'm caught in a trap?

That graph is really interesting as an example of people tailoring their responses to social mores. Beer drinking is a proud Wisconsin tradition, second only to cheese, and any Wisconsinite will happily tell you about their imbibement. In contrast most southerners will pretend to be good Baptists while putting away a 30 rack of Natty ice every night. I'd love to see per capita alcohol sales by country next to it.

IIRC you have to join a drinking club to be able to buy booze in Utah.

I can definitely see some of these counties taking the stance that "no alcohol sales = no drinking = zero excessive drinking".
