There are more spots available in afc, and a better chance of getting a guaranteed spot rather than always having to go to a playoff.

A playoff against the 4th place CONCACAF team isn't any sort of guarantee for Australia, either. They made the right choice. This could change once the cup expands to 48, but there's no way they could have predicted that
