This was after Columbia. Our standards were absolutely insane. We regularly had to go through a dozen or more spray nozzles just to prep one single-use manual spray gun in order to meet the pressure regulation requirements. Literally no one could meet our tolerance demands for a few years. No one else on Earth had a need for such tight tolerances.

Russian MoD is shifting the goal posts just a teensy bit. I'm sure when this is all over they'll be back to telling everyone this was just an exercise all along.

quote:

I just want to circle back to those words from the Russian defence ministry, which appear to signal a downgrading of Russian military ambitions in Ukraine. To date, the assumption of most analysts had been that Russia’s aim included taking Kyiv and replacing Volodymyr Zelenskiy and the current Ukraine government with a more pliant administration that would no longer be looking to the EU and to Nato but to Moscow.

However, in the last hour or so, Sergei Rudskoi, head of the Russian general staff’s main operational directorate, has said:

The main objectives of the first stage of the operation have generally been accomplished. The combat potential of the armed forces of Ukraine has been considerably reduced, which ... makes it possible to focus our core efforts on achieving the main goal, the liberation of Donbas.

The defence ministry said Russian-backed separatists now controlled 93% of Luhansk and 54% of Donetsk – the two self-proclaimed republics that jointly make up the Donbas.

Nevertheless, Russia’s general staff said its military operation in Ukraine would continue until Russian forces had completed the tasks that had been set, without saying what those tasks were.

Russia’s military had considered two options for its operation in Ukraine, one confined to the Donbas and the other on the whole territory of Ukraine, before opting for the latter, Rudskoi said.

It should be remembered, though, that for weeks leading up to the invasion of Ukraine, Russia insisted that the build-up of troops and equipment on the borders and inside Belarus was for training exercise purposes.

interesting interview:

https://twitter.com/EuromaidanPress/status/1507436900658860036?s=20&t=aKO9iaAPaQIbNO_OPufTuw

final paragraph, referencing trees finally having leaves:

"One of the key components of Budanov’s job has been to organize a force of guerrillas who will stay behind Russian lines. He wouldn’t say much about the force, except that it is “a very large number of people,” raising the prospect of a drawn-out insurgency like that in Afghanistan or Vietnam. He mentioned that hunters had been drafted into the group, and I thought about the Ukrainian woodsman who blew himself up near Chernihiv with a grenade rather than hand over a list of local hunters to Russian troops. “Our warriors, our servicemen, even our hunters will start hunting the aggressor, the Russian forces, with their rifles in the forests,” he said. “I should say that soon the spring will come, our forests will become green, and a real hell will open up for the aggressor.""

What sounds a lot like an announcement of a (partial) withdrawal seems a bit odd given how busy the Kremlin is whipping its people into war frenzy. I wonder whether they cleared this with the top or just decided "gently caress this poo poo, bring the boys home?"

I'm pretty sure the guy on the right with the perplexed look is Col. Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev a.k.a. "The butcher of Mariupol," and the man on the left is probably Lt. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi, head of the Russian General Staff's Main Operational Directorate, but who is sitting between them?

In slightly lighter news, if any of you build models, you might be aware that quite a few kitmakers (along with producers of decals and aftermarket parts) are based in Ukraine. Well, as of today, in the least surprising new release news to ever happen, BigPlanesKits announced a Bayraktar TB2 in 1/72 scale, while ClearProp Models has one in 1/48.

I have a special hatred for MBA's. I started my IT career right at the tail end of the dot com bust. Turns out a shitload of MBA's went and got loving windows 2000 MCSE's from test bootcamps and planted themselves into all levels of IT management. I'm currently trying to push back against a bunch of MPA's(think MBA but public sector) trying to turn us into a 24/7 shop with 8-5 staff without paying any comp or overtime. gently caress them.

There was some reporting yesterday that the recent Ukrainian counter offensives could form the western prong of Russia's salient into a pocket. IF true (big if) Russia pulling those troops back saying, 'Mission Accomplished!' could be trying to give cover to what is, in essence, a full retreat by asserting it's a planned withdrawal and any reporting to the contrary is propaganda.

Really BIG would be if Ukraine could actually form that pocket thus making this claim even more absurd. "We won! Seriously! You can let those guys go, they were all done anyway!"

I'd have to imagine that having the better parts of 2 CAAs worth of assault forces in a pocket would give Ukraine a bit more heft at the negotiating table.
