DeimosRising posted:in this case the album was written while they were actual teenagers, and the imaginary misogynist violence gets pretty goofy at times. you can absolutely tell it's written by a hormonal teenager, which doesn't mean it's fine but it's a very real, familiar perspective Ah So like Pinkerton except not written by a 26 year old.

DeimosRising posted:the last time i saw them they didn't play anything from eyewtkas, I assumed that was why. I was pretty shocked they were touring for the anniversary since Daryl has gone on the record as saying he regrets writing a lot of the album. The band has definitely gone out of their way to not play a lot of it ever since the first "reunion" back in 2008. The title track should stay on the setlist though, it's really something else live. Uncle Boogeyman posted:also speaking as an old man, that poo poo didn't just "age poorly," people recognized it as being pretty bad back then too Yeah I should have probably said "to say the least" on that since even at the time I remember being like "This is a bit much." When they first announced the shows there wasn't anything about the Worship & Tribute nights so it looked like the only live GJ on the horizon, and then when they rescheduled/added the second date I did consider just getting a refund, but for better or worse that album was pretty formative for me as a teenager (better for the musical effect, worse for the angry teenager validation) and it may very well be the only time I will ever hear Ry Ry's Song live in my lifetime. But having done it I'm mostly glad to have gotten it out of my system, the second night was definitely superior.

Speaking of soul glo, their new (full length) album is so so loving good. I love songs to yeet at the sun, and this album takes all of that energy and upgrades it an incredible amount. Best thing I’ve heard so far all year.

Have found myself listening to Rudimentary Peni's Death Church from 1983 a lot this week and, it's a pretty good record. There's a lot of same feels I've got from Christian Death's 80s stuff from US in there in places. Another one of those bands I've kind of seen around in patches and like in gigs over the years but never really got around to checking out.

New Prince Daddy also rules. You can definitely tell Kory's singing lessons paid off in the long run, sounds much better without losing that rasp. Keep Up That Talk probably my fav on the record. I got a good laugh checking out the Brave Faces Etc. release that popped up for Spanish Love Songs. They just took the record and made the songs all downtempo and sad sounding, which honestly kills so much of the vibe for me. Feels like the record nobody was asking them to make - there's something special about their brand of emo where it sounds so much like somebody trying to have fun but being too goddamned broken to let go of their pain that really makes it punch.
