Stewart has been better this season but his performance frequently comes off as tired. I just assume this is because he’s an 80+ year old man playing a 90+ year old

There are some times I'm like "dude, you wanna take five, get some big sighs out, and come back for another read?"

i was gonna say that. the effects let him down but he was still acting recognisably like data.

frakes still felt like riker, but that line is pretty blurry.

de lancie acted mostly like Q even when delivering awful cryptic lines. him hitting picard and being furious was OOC, but picard picked up on that as meaning something was off so that's fine.

it's really picard and seven who just feel like the actors with a nametag slapped on. guinan was okay in ep1, she's just old.

haven't seen ep4 though. not watching anymore because it hasn't improved.

Guinan too. Partly because it's a new actress, but also partly because the writers can't write Guinan.

Oh yeah a car chase that culminates in *spoilers I guess just in case* the characters realising they have a spaceship they can use to beam anywhere isn't just a terrible end but also actively highlights how the script was just putting the characters in a hamster wheel for a while.

My big Star Trek secret:

I never cared much for Guinan as a character. Supposedly her and Picard have this deep relationship, and most of her lines are either just stating that fact or vague advice any stranger could give someone.

I'm sensing the "we gotta find something for X to do here" thing a lot. Let's kill so-and-so. Put what's-his-face in a cage. Two other randos can scuttle around for a while doing action. Now we have the characters we actually wrote for! Well... okay, we have a character we wrote for and the guy the show's named after. Let's find him something to do in his head for a while.

Guinan inserts herself into the story space that Troi already occupies and makes her irrelevant in the week where the famous movie star is on set.

I've had bad takes before but if you want my worst take it's this:
I hate that Picard uses the Edith Piaf song from Inception because every time they play it (twice now) all I can think is "gosh I really love Inception and I wish Picard would stop pretending it deserves this pathos."

Kind of funny that the main instance of Troi convincingly doing her job, including not being able to cheat with her powers is in Picard, when she's long retired

I laughed when he called her one of his oldest and best friends. I let it slide because yeah, she's probably older than any of Picard's acquaintances, but he also claimed Data was his best friend and I just feel if anyone old comes up he'd say the same things. I know people like that, everyone is their best friend, so like, it doesn't mean anything to some people. Still funny on Picard since he was never a friendly guy, he didn't pal around or be a friend very often in TNG he was generally being Captain. I do buy that he's so disconnected from friendship and normal friends for so long he probably over time looks back at all the rear end kissers and order followers and legitimate respect as friendship.

it's also funny that his wine-worker friends end up being slaves in the darq-timeline. wonder if theyd be his friend if he wasnt giving them a fancy place to live

Turns out Picard has a long list of old and dear friends all of whom he stopped seeing and then replaced with some of the biggest losers in the federation

And we get to watch their antics every week? Yeah that’s what I’d call an epic gritty 😎😎

I never did too much either. I think just because it was very much a tell not show thing. We just weren't shown them interacting that much. A something happening and someone on the bridge crew interrupting Picard chatting with Guinan to inform him, or something, really would of helped with that I think. Or better just having Picard go to Guinan for advice on some of the more difficult moral issues he would find himself struggling with.

So is Q like actively causing the time disruption while Picard and crew are trying to figure it out? Usually he just snaps his fingers and the whole state of things is in play and going, but this episode makes it seem like he's trying to cause the disruptions as he goes.

It was implied in Episode 2 that something is wrong with Q. It then happened again at the end of the most recent episode where he tried to use his powers and couldn't, which surprised him.

Yeah, this version of Q seems like he's less of the casino dealer, and more like a guy who's also actively placed a bet at the roulette wheel alongside Picard just to see what happens and has now realized he just bet twice his life savings and the wheel is already spinning.

It would be an interesting twist if, in his anger at Picard cocking up on the Stargazer, Q also made a giant cock up when loving with the timeline trying to teach him a lesson and is now equally screwed as a result and now once again has to rely on Picard to save his rear end completely. It'd be a nice chance for Picard to give Q another one of his patented "You dumb son of a bitch!" speeches and actually have it stick this time.

It'd have been fine if they just retconned him being a zombie robot, but they want to have it both ways, where they make stupid references to it but also it never matters and Picard is the galaxy's shittiest robot.
