Got my Ahriman Eternal LE in. I'll report back on the book after I finish it but this is one of the cooler mega box editions they've put out.

The past mega box editions were taller and the corners would frequently split so it seems like they flattened it out to prevent that which is good. It's much sturdier.

This is a prologue and is a little journal of one of the sorcerer's under Ahriman. It is a log of his experiences summoning various demons to try and figure out how they can fix the problem they are having. Without any spoilers the thousand sons are being wiped out one by one (both rubric and non-rubric marines) by the backlash from the casting of the Rubric.

This page is the conversation he is having with a piece of his soul he split off long ago that contains the more noble part of himself. It's trapped in a mirror hence the backward writing. I had to pull out the scarab mirror and use it to read this page which I thought was a cool little touch.

One cool thing in the story that I will spoiler but isn't to much of one, it's about a character that appears in the first couple of chapters:

Ahriman has a pariah/blank companion. I didn't realize there were any pariahs on the side of chaos but she is one of the last members of a cult in the eye of terror that was obsessed with collecting secrets. What I found interesting is that she is described in appearance very much like a sister of silence except her helm is the exact negative of the silent sisters helm with her mouth being the only part not covered. Her armor is very similar and she even carries a big rear end sword. I am hoping we get more background on her and if there is any relation to the silent sisterhood

And that's where they shall remain according to the relevant articles. Updated but still 7th edition.
This is pretty much going to be a cheaper starter box and work in conjunction with the Forgeworld releases. Because the biggest issue with 30k is that it being Forgeworld and resin it makes entry even more expensive than 40k is.

The spiky iron halo he wears generates a minor gravitational field and and conversion field bubble around the wearer? Nice try but it's okay to want to wear pretty tiaras that match with your cape.

I don’t think I “got” the ending.

So did the Sorcerer send his super-plague back in time via the astropathic choir, and that’s what made the fleet get corrupted and fall apart earlier in the episode? If so, did he send his plague anywhere else, or just complete that one loop?

Also I got some real John Carpenter’s The Thing and Akira vibes from that episode.

Not my favorite H&B episode (I think that’s a tie between Artefacts and the Tech Priest one, though I might need to rewatch the others) but it was still neat.

All things considered I’m still getting a kick out of Warhammer+. I finally finished Angels of Death, and while I wasn’t keen on it at first, it got a lot better as it went along and I ended up liking it a lot. Likewise, The Exodite has been pretty great so far.

Add that to the Loremasters and masterclass stuff, and a cool free mini, and I feel like I’m getting my money’s worth.

Man the AoS line is just stagnating. Josh Reynolds leaving really tore the heart out of it. There are all these books that are clearly starts of big series that are just never going to happen now. Maybe the focus is on old world fiction in preparation for that supposed relaunch? Would explain the lack of almost anything. But hey, new Gotrick at least

The HH cinematic was cool - I think nailed the scale of HH. The problem I have is - firstly why Horus having so many drat tubes in his head.

Also after watching Astartes you don't see the hypercompetency of Astartes - they just look like generic dudes in armour rather than elite gene-modified killers where one kill ratio is a full platoon to one legionnaire. I know that's nullified as its astartes vs astartes but you just don't see why they're elite. Not a big deal but just my thoughts.

It's a result of the animation imo. The astartes is astartes either very visibly thumped around like walking tanks while also interspersed high speed movement to illustrate that yes, these guys can move when they need to.

We discussed a possible Band of Brother style show hundreds of pages back and someone brought up the best way to illustrate Astartes is have the guardsmen squad or whatever in a prolonged gun fight against an entrenched foe or whatever and then have like 2 Astartes show up for 45 seconds and just demolish everything before sprinting off.

Astartes is very much in the vein of realism while the Horus Heresy cinematic wants to invoke the old "mountain of marines" cover art for warhammer codexes. The proportions are more exaggerated and cartoony than Astartes or the Starcraft 2 Armouring trailer, so I think the retro style action works well to compliment the look.

This was the crux of one of the earliest Blood Angels stories. A bunch of Guard are stuck pinned down by a bunker, a couple of Assault Marines turn up, melt everyone in it then the bunker itself, chainsword the survivors then are like ‘k, we out’ and fly off, leaving the Guard amazed by the Emperor’s Angels Of Death.

And the three marines break through entrenched enemy positions and massacre them while several companies worth of Ghosts are having trouble facing similar opposition and taking lots of casualties. At one point the Ghosts think the enemy is counter-attacking them, but it turns out they're running away from the marines in blind panic.

Such a good book, and the Marine/normal human interactions where the coolest part.

Abnett really nails human/marine interaction from the human POV. The marines are terrifying weirdos that give the impression that they don't give a poo poo about the guard they're supporting. And then slowly you realise that they are just super focused on whatever mission they've been given, assume that the guard will do their part, and have absolutely no interest in any kind of social interaction or niceties because they're living weapons who have had their action switch set to "go".

And then you get strangely human moments like a White Scar taking the time to teach a burnt out guardsman with lovely bionics how to be a sniper again

The first Dawn of War game on PC was my introduction to WH40K and it had the Blood Ravens librarian Isidor say the following about not directly attacking orks with the guard regiments at their disposal in the second mission of the game. "What are the Imperial Guard for if not to die for their Emperor?"

Looking back at the cut scenes it really contrasts with GABRIEL ANGELOS in the first mission having concern for civilians and wounded. Despite being bristly with the commissar when he offers a thanks for coming to the rescue. "I AM NOT HERE FOR YOUR THANKS. WE HAVE A MISSION TO COMPLETE THAT I AM EXPOSITION DUMPING FOR THE PLAYER OF THIS GAME."

It's an entirely chapter by chapter thing. The Minotaurs are not going to give a single gently caress but the Salamanders/Scars/Wolves/Ultramarines might.

The Iron Snakes are cool cause the main protagonist clearly tried to be social but couldn't quite nail it.
