Another steam controller config issue: when I change what a button does, the original button's input still fires when I press that button. So say I make L1 into the letter "n". When I press L1 get both "n" and "L1" being output. Is there a way to prevent that? (so only "n" is output)

- The story is... honestly terrible. It starts off quite interesting / good but devolves into a giant mess of plot threads that never are follow upon, characters that show up out nowhere / have no backstory or prior characterization and just the scale of things gets way, way too big for what the devs could do. It tries to introduce a lot of "cool" things while not explaining anything properly, especially character motivations. The ending is also a complete mess.

The worst: Bugs. Theres lots of them. A lot of the game seems unfinished or they ran out of time. Almost none of the subtitles ever match voiced lines. They forgot to put voice modulation for some characters during cutscenes for some lines so suddenly menacing darth vader becomes bro dudeski. It's possible to fall out of the level geometry at several places, also at the final boss reloading the checkpoint put me into an endless void so I had to reload a savegame. Half of my inventory just vanished once. The devs of this game either bit off more than they can chew or they ran out of time/money. My playtime at the end was 16.8 hours with 100% of sidequests finished.

For what it's worth, the devs seem to be listening to this feedback. The game has just had a couple big bugfix patches and they plan to add more epilogue to the story to try and tie up a lot of its loose ends while not affecting the progress of folks who are already playing/finished.

Hmm, seems to only be a problem with non-steam games. That is, the ones that use the "desktop configuration".

It's possible that the game is natively detecting your controller and registering those inputs in addition to the Steam ones. Some games like this on Steam will give you a warning before you launch them telling you to disable Steam inputs but naturally it doesn't pick up on this if it's a non-Steam game you've added to your library. Honesty not sure off the top of my head what your best solution here is; what's the game?

Oblivion on Steam, which has a script extender that disables the Steam overlay. But I got the same result when I tried Rage 2 on Epic. It usually doesn't matter, because for most games I don't customize the controls too much, but when you mod a Bethesda game, many functions aren't bindable to a gamepad natively, so you need a way of imitating keystrokes with a button. New Vegas has gotten much more extensive scripting support over the years, so you can do a lot of this from in-game menus. But Oblivion has been, comparatively, forgotten.

Maybe there's a mod conflict somewhere? I'm not an expert on Oblivion modding but perhaps if a mod that introduces better controller support is used (like NorthernUI) that might somehow be conflicting with Steam's native stuff?

It sounds like a very odd problem.

But like I said, it's not limited to Oblivion. It behaves that way in every non-Steam game I've tried.

Anyone try out Spirit of the Island? I want to try it with my brother, though the demo really didn't do a good job at selling it to us (no quests or NPCs, the only enemies were a pair of crabs, all you could really do was just farm crops that you couldn't even sell). It seems interesting enough... though looking through the board for it there is a lot of "Hey how do I do this?" "Oh its not in the game yet" going on.

Yeah, it looks cute but I would shy away from buying any of those sorts of games in early access to be honest.

Elden Ring

Holy poo poo, what a game. It might just be the best open world game made yet. Nothing else has come close to the sense of exploration and discovery this game has. I'm sure everyone is probably aware given how it's taken over video game media for the last few weeks so I'll keep it short.

Pros
- Fromsoft combat, great all around
- Incredible detail and variety in the open world.
- Multiplayer messages actually create a real feeling of interacting with a community of players, even the troll messages
- Some outstanding boss battles, some of the best Fromsoft has ever made
- Tons of convenient and QoL improvements over previous games, easily the most accessible and ease of use Fromsoft game by far

Cons
- Some optional boss battles that are stale and tedious; mostly either from fighting the same thing again or having to chase a large boss back and forth across a huge area
- Some optional boss battles that feel genuinely unfair and if you win seems like it was RNG rather then skill
- Weapon upgrades mean early on you need to pick 2-3 main weapons despite hundreds of possible options (you can eventually buy infinite numbers of weapon upgrade materials)
- Bows pretty much suck in general, slightly useful only in rare specific situations
- Typical obtuse and obscure sidequests especially when NPCs suddenly relocate on the map without warning

Redeemer is absolutely worth that price. I wish there was a sequel to iron out some jank, but considering the state of indie sequels it would probably be open world or some dumb poo poo.

Shelab got a pre-release copy of the full game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAfPo86C7Uw It seemed very early access with lots of placeholder game elements. I wish developers would polish up the features they have before adding more.

I tried the demo too and it was okay. I might give it another try if they ever add controller support. Playing a relaxing game with an unrelaxing input device doesn't work for me.

If you want to fight stuff, you'd probably like Core Keeper better.

Somebody explain Hylics to me.

I bought Hylics 2 off of word of mouth, just general positive reception, more or less sight unseen. I've played a bit and it seems like a sort of weird RPG sorta thing but so far it's not really clicking with me.

What is it about the game that really jives with people? Is it the odd presentation/art style, does the writing get real good, are people just hungry for weird rpgs?

I don't think I've ever seen a PC game in my entire life that shows switch button prompts.
Also, I dunno if the original 8bitdo pro does this but my Pro 2 just has a selector switch on the back to flip between xinput, directinput, android and switch modes. I just have it set to xinput so Windows reads it the same as any xbox controller. I think the directinput is for OSX compatibility? idk

I use DInput mode for some old PC games that don't recognize XInput controllers, and also emulation because it allows me to use the menu button that XInput reads as the Xbox guide button as something else if I need to. For most modern games though you want to use XInput mode because that's what they recognize, though Switch mode frequently works through Steam Input as well. Older 8bitdo controllers don't have the switch, you change modes by holding specific buttons on the controller.

The letters are definitely corresponding to both XBox and Playstation but not Switch because this tutorial prompt only goes away if I press the bottom button, which is A / X respectively. On the Switch, that bottom button would be B.

Still amusing. Surprisingly good game so far - early on but there's a lot of nice incidental dialogue that fleshes out the characters quickly and effectively, even compared to the GotG movies.

I believe some games you can select Switch button prompts? Just going by memory, I feel like I saw it somewhere.

Man I really want a Pro 2 but I just can't justify the cost when my Pro Plus is still working so well. It's like...slightly upgraded same thing, you know? With a few extra buttons and a nicer grip. Goes on sale every month tho, so no rush in pulling the trigger.

Huh, is this a new Steam feature? It's a free Slay the Spire mod but it showed up in the "New and trending" list and gets its own download button and library entry. It's a cool idea (and a great game overhaul mod in this case) but I'm not sure how well it will work if every lovely workshop mod will get its own Steam page. Looking at the news updates for Slay the Spire though it looks like the original devs shouted it out and linked it there, so maybe its' up to the original publisher which mods get their own store page?
