It has AI, and it's functional, but I wouldn't say it's like the Tomcat. Not yet, anyway.

With a sale on the horizon: I just started playing a few weeks ago, and I tried out the F-16 and was learning some of the basics before the trial week ended. Is there any reason I wouldn't want to buy that as my first payware plane? Are there more popular options, or something that's better for someone new to sims?

I'd recommend the tomcat, viggen, jeff, Flaming Cliffs 3, mig-21, f-5, hornet. Tomcat and Hornet have the best campaigns.

Mirage is awesome, maybe my favorite module. But it lives in a kind of limbo because it’s too advanced for the Cold War servers but is outclassed by the modern Fox3 airplanes. It’s still very capable in the right hands especially if you get to the merge, but fighting against SpAMRAAMs is an uphill battle.

If you plan to play online, at least the Viggen will have a very good place on Cold War servers (Enigma)

F-5 is the best plane to fly low over an airfield at transonic speeds and proceed to drop a string of bombs that hits nothing.

Or better yet refuses to drop at all since you left the jettison select on from when you dropped your tanks.

I've killed more armored vehicles with guns than bombs, and the guns are not that good.

The viggen. Data cartridge, stol, best anti shipping missile, some mavericks, and other fun a2g weaponry. It sucks at bvr (nothing but heaters), and dropping heavy or precision ordnance. Countermeasures are optional, but if you’re in the weeds like you should be you’ll be masked all the way in.

One of the problems is that DCS nerds are obsessed with killing main battle tanks with unguided bombs. Plucky planes like the F-5 and A-4 are a joy to fly, but don't fulfill the power fantasy of a mediocre to outright bad pilot being able to wipe the floor with enemy heaviest armor formations.

When going for softer targets, it can be a real fucker once you have some practice and embrace Big Bomb, High Speed, vs the snakeyes imo.

Because bombs in DCS basically don't work except for absolutely spot on direct hits. I dropped an -82 on an Zu-23 and it took maybe 30% damage :wtc: Like, the concussion alone would take out the crew, at least for a few minutes.

Edit: Speaking of power fantasies that don't work out. I flew the FA18 into a huge flight of Mi-8s and Hinds intended to just clean up. The Aim-7s wouldn't lock on even in helo mode (acceptable, it's hard), flares work really well against sidewinders, and you really feel how limited 500 rounds in such a quick firing gun feels. I almost always got wasted by one of the Hind's cannons. The P-51 actually felt like a better choice for this kind of thing and I got more kills before I died.

I adore the Viggen. Feels great flying amongst the trees and popping up for a strike and then GTFO. I bought the F-14 in the last sale and I’ve barely used it because I just wanna Viggen whenever I play.

The F-14 and the F-5 are the two planes that feel the most like real airplanes to me.

Not that I've flown either one in real life, but real planes do creak and rattle and shake and whoosh like that, and they get blown around and don't always do exactly what you say. Fly by wire jets to me always feel just a little bit like flying a plane in a video game (). Pull the joystick, point the nose, and the plane just goes where it's pointing. Boring. The F-14 and F-5 both give you some attitude when you push them hard, and landing one of those in a crosswind feels much more like landing a real plane.

I didn't know the current campaign was only using a 2 ship flight. It is Vaha's favorite plane so it's in every mission. Every one.

I seriously can't recall a mission in recent memory when there weren't Tomcats. It's a goon favorite. The only real strike against it is each plane counts double against the max player count. That and I guess when it comes to goons and DCS the bug and viper are more popular easier to fly - and more versatile.

Btw I'm not *really* arguing with you. I was being a smart rear end with the first post, but I'm not against having more cats. Just gotta make a mission where the Tomcat is featured more.

In our current campaign, consistency is very key. If you find me reliable pilots and RIO's, I find you slots.
Same for Israeli planes.

We already had to drop the C-130 from our plans due to it not getting used, and potentially if I add another Tomcat which takes two player spots each, I'm now sacrificing some other plane spot. And it really stinks when the tomcat doesn't show up, and the RIO who has never flown the plane is now left standing on the beach, longingly wishing they'd get to play.
