You can hit those high frame rates in esports titles with medium/high settings with most of the higher end recent cards. But there's a big difference between 240hz in csgo and other more intensive titles, both in terms of strain on the GPU and actual utility. The difference up to a medium high refresh rate from 60fps is way more tangible than the difference between medium and super high refresh rates and the only games you should really be worried about trying to hit the caps on your new monitor with are those esports titles you mentioned. Just because you can go to up 240hz that shouldn't be a hard target in every game because that's just not realistic, this gen or next.

Gotcha.

And wrt cpu I have a 12600k that manages (at 1080p)3-400fps in csgo and 2-300 in Valorant with my current 1070

Even on CSgo, and absolutely not on Valorant, 1440p @240hz is a pipe dream.

Most esports players play on 1080p with settings set to the absolute minimum possible settings (as in low for everything, with nearly all visual features turned off) to achieve 240/360 FPS. It’s just not realistic yet for 1440p.

Buying a 240hz monitor is not the solution to fixing issues when you run at 144. It’s buying a 144hz monitor that works well (of which there are many) and having a system that can handle the load like a 3080+.

tbf it should last a LONG time, assuming no other big changes in the monitor space take off. as 4k becomes more achievable high refresh rate 1440p will become even more of "the sweet spot" than it imo already is.

I'm honestly a little scared to go past 1080p and 60Hz. I don't do any competitive gaming, but if I switched to higher resolutions or framerates, I'm not sure I'd be able to ever switch back.

I'm looking to plug into VR at some point though, which might undo my abstinence. Project Wingman would play so loving good with VR.

You will definitely struggle to go back. 60hz is super noticeable once you adjust to 144hz.

Monitors are not that pricey anymore. You can land a nice 1440p@144hz for around $250.

I wouldn't ever use less than 2 monitors at work, but I seem to transition to a single-monitor at home without missing it too much. I take it back actually—switching between 1080p and 1440p probably wouldn't be that big a deal either if all I'm doing is farting around and gaming.

But from what I've been hearing, switching back to 60Hz can range from moderately annoying to downright frustrating, even for desktop work. That's a withdrawal symptom that I can do without. :cocaine:

I went from one monitor, to two, to three. And then to a single ultra-wide monitor and that's where I've stayed since .. well ultra-wides have been a thing.
I have recently been thinking about going to two monitors again mostly because real 4k ultra-wides (ie 5k2k) aren't really catching on. There is maybe three models in existence. And certainly nothing that can do better than 60hz - this is most likely a bandwidth limitation though. Maybe things will improve when DP 2.0 starts trickling out.

I do feel that ultra-wides have moved out of the super niche space into more main stream. Especially with things like this new Alienware OLED coming out.

So my opinion is that if you are going to stay on single monitor you should just make it be an ultra-wide.

Look at the prices on these models, think about the average person's budget, and take another shot at whether that qualifies as "mainstream" imo. Especially when they could just get a 32" M32Q or something for almost a third of the price (which is already more than many are willing to spend).

The total cost of this bundle is a fair bit below the cost of the next-cheapest unbundled 3070 Ti, so it may be worth it for the card alone. Unlike the last bit of ewaste this card was bundled with, this motherboard may still be usable for a budget Zen 3 system, though honestly I'd still just try to get what I can for it from ebay or craigslist.

You can get windows keys for far cheaper at SA Mart. And if you aren't using a dedicated GPU (which you won't need for such a simple use case), then you'll need a CPU with integrated graphics, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08X6JPK4K?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1

You can save money by getting DDR4-3200 since the extra speed from 3600 won't make a difference here. And that PSU is overkill too. Something like this for $50 is already more than what you need: https://www.newegg.com/evga-500-br-...7uBQQqfmakIx6kQ

Going to give you an alternate here.

Buy a used or decommissioned office pc from Craigslist or eBay, throw extra ram and an SSD in there and call it a day.

You get a small form factor, and a much cheaper cost. While what you’re building is adequate, it’s way overkill for his needs.

Quick update, lugged in the new monitor yesterday and tried a few games, I can still run Doom Eternal on native 3440×1440 with all high / some highest settings at a stable 80-90 fps. GTX1080 is still a beast after all this time

I missed that post, but I just want to point out that ultrawide 1440p is not anywhere near as hard to drive as 4K. 4K is 1.67x as many pixels as 3440x1440p, which is a big difference in my book.

Anyway, waiting is probably the smart move. You'll probably struggle with games that are harder to run (Doom Eternal runs well on everything), but even the midrange 40-series cards will likely end up being able to drive 3440x1440 just fine for years.

This Asus 3070 Ti with an Asus Prime B660M-A motherboard for $830 is actually a pretty okay deal: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.4487716&quicklink=true

The motherboard is usable for a modern Intel 12th gen system, though I wouldn't put a 12900 in it or anything (and probably not a 12700 either, though it's doable). If you don't want a bundled motherboard, then EVGA has their 3070 Ti XC3 in stock for $720, which is "just" 20% over MSRP.

because it's for sure the sweet spot or sanest option at the high end. the three that launched at near launch (3060ti, 3070 and 3080 10GB) have much much more competitive RRPs than anything that came later, and the diminishing returns after 3080 are insane. here's some random game from the recent 3090ti review:

there is a little variation depending on the game and if it needs a ton of vram but spitballing - a 3070 (RRP 499) gets you 70, a 3080 (RRP 699) gets you about 100. two hundred dollars buys you thirty frames, not a terrible ROI. to get another 5 frames costs five hundred dollars and to get only another 25 frames on the 3080 costs 1300 dollars more.

of course MSRPs are still a joke but they influence secondary market pricing, you're never going to get a 3080ti for less than MSRP.

Thanks PC Building Megathread, that’s was fun and the cooler stuff went great and the whole thing is up and running. Haven’t settled on radiator/fan orientation on that part, we’ll see. The case interferes by <1/8” if I put the radiator tight against the top, so I flipped the fans to go between the rad and the case. Also I don’t actually know if it should suck air into the case or blow it out in this configuration. Currently exhausting, so the fans are pulling air through the rad.

After a day of looking at it, I decided I was going to need some further support on that monster GPU, so I ordered a little screw jack to put under it, most subtle solution I could find. And then less than a minute later, I found an alternate solution 🤣

Only mistake I made on the build was getting an NVME drive with a built in heat sink, I didn’t realize how the Aorus worked and that it provided its own stylized heat sink sandwich, which now I can’t use. Minor bummer, oh well. I can live with that.

This, however, is going to drive me nuts:

They only provided two singles, the rest are multi-terminations and it’s so dumb. I’m not after aesthetics here but come on.
