You worked on the xbox version, right? If I remember right, you worked on the revamped console controls?

I started the tutorial for Crusader Kings 3 yesterday, it was mostly an hour of reading but it seems like exactly the type of game I'd like.
Still no idea how it all works but I can't wait to give it a proper play tonight and find out how everything fits together.

The console controls seem very good so far, lots of nice and easy ways to quickly jump from menu to menu because hoo boy there are a lot of menus. I love GUI-based games, it seems this game can get very deep.
The 'hold left stick' to conjure up a mouse cursor to check out the tooltips seems to be a good trade-off, takes some getting used to but it's very manageable.

I don't have any issues with making out the blue text, like another poster mentioned. The colors are distinct to me. I'm using an LG OLED fyi.

Also, the text is nice and clear, easy to read, not to big and not to small. So far the UI seems great, did a great job on this!

BTW you'll want to keep it that way for all content because now the Xbox pixels line up 1:1 with your screen's pixel grid, properly matching its native resolution. That's assuming your TV is 4K or 1080p and your Xbox is outputting at that same resolution.

It's nuts that many TVs still have a slightly zoomed-in "overscan" mode enabled by default instead of showing the full picture.

They're nice. They're functionally the same controller you got with your xbox, just with custom colours.

Blame broadcast TV. A lot of channels I find still broadcast older content with the scan noise in the image intact, that parts that would be hidden by the overscan. So naturally manufacturers keep the overscan on by default least anyone complains about seeing this weird noise on the borders of the screen.

Even then it really shouldn't by defaulting to that for external HDMI sources like consoles.

But yeah, I understand the thinking for broadcast TV, which used to have to make shows "overscan safe" while ignoring the margins but now has to make shows and graphics both overscan and fullscan safe.

the BD laser in my slim PS3 died but it'll still read DVD and CDs. sad but it's modded so doesn't really matter I guess :cheersdoge:

It's not really just a software thing, there's often different lasers to do all of the different classes of disc (like different laser colors due to the different wavelengths required) and the more you support the more you introduce complexity into the drive which means more points of failure. It's not impossible that the headaches some people are having with BD100 discs stems from this.

I’m the Technical Director at the studio but we have like 6 projects going at any one time so I more look after things in a general sense than working on things directly these days, usually. There’s been a large team of programmers and artists and designers and QA working on CK3 since before the new consoles were even announced. It is a bigger game than I think anybody realised!

Glad you’re enjoying it :)

e- One last gripe, the light blue text bits that can be hovered on for more info are hard to see. Like barely different from the white text and I have good vision and am not color blind.
This is excellent feedback, I passed this on to some of the other Directors this morning. Overscan/safe areas used to be a requirement for console games but with the advent of HDTVs it became less of a concern because as you’ve found out your TV can work around it.

The game is absolutely huge so there’s hundreds and hundreds of screens and it would be a massive undertaking to then make them dynamic to account for things like different font sizes or safe areas with however many languages we support (at least 8 but I’m not sure how many.)

That said the game could at least explain overscan situation to the user in the settings or something so you don’t need to get pointers from internet strangers…

I thought I was going crazy because literally every time I would go home I'd turn off motion smoothing on my dad's TV and every single time it would somehow look like a loving TV movie when I came back. Turns out deep in the settings his TV was set to "demo mode" which means that whatever picture adjustments were made would be reverted back to stock after 10 minutes.

I like film mode for TV especially since I can't stand the "70s soap opera effect", but on some movies it seems waaaay too dark.

all ya gotta do is turn off the motion smoothing, i think raw hd picture needs a bit of post-processing on most garbage 4K panels. sharpness, contrast and colour need tweaking for sure

American McGay

My HDTV setup advice is as soon as you get your TV google whatever your particular manufacturer's proprietary name for motion smoothing is and turn it off. Then, spend 5 minutes in the picture settings menu moving the different sliders back and forth until you get a picture that you think looks good. Finally, throw your remote in the garbage so that you can never change these settings again. Live happily with your new TV.

If you're consulting some guide online about the recommended picture settings for your TV then you've already failed.
