Older women are a core demographic of Putin supporters so it's not astonishing to see them parroting his propaganda, especially if their family is directly connected to the Russian state through their son being a staff sergeant in the army (probably VDV given that he died early near Kiev).

The summary is that, in the event of a cut-off, the UK has significant spare capacity in terms of LNG ports. AND, crucially, it has pipelines for gas to/from Europe. This is unaffected by Brexit, and the politics are (for once) straightforward.

Ukraine is richer even if you include Moscow and St Petersburg, which massively skew the Russian stats; without them it's far richer. And many of the conscripts come from these dirt-poor regions.

Is there a particular reason to believe that Ruble exchange rate chart? There is no open market for Rubles anymore. The exchange rate is what the government makes it. Moreover, because the government has legally compelled Russian companies to turn over foreign currency, they also compel businesses to accept the government exchange rate. So how is this evidence of Russia surviving anything? It's a little like saying "The Russian stock market hasn't even tanked" when it's barely been open and most people can't legally sell anything right now.

So how is this evidence of Russia surviving anything? Not at all, obviously no sane nation or trader outside of Russia wants to buy Rubel at the moment because it's just beyond risky. It has recently demonstrated extreme inflation in the face of the sanctions and further sanctions will gently caress it up more. Russia has been twisting as many arms as they can find to buy Rubel domestically and abroad, they have confiscated foreign currency from citizens, prevented them from exchanging Rubel, and they're demanding international payments in Rubel so that foreign nations or traders must first buy Rubel. They're doing this because they're desperate, not because it's fun. It might be fun to them too but that's beside the point.

It doesn't seem right That's kind of what we're circling back to, Russia is not a rich country. It's a poor country with a) big oil and gas reserves and b) a central government that funnels a lot of wealth into its two major cities. Ukraine is in fact better off because they've decentralized quite a bit over the last decade so more local taxation is being used to fund local projects.

I had a co-worker who had a grandmother who refused to have a toilet installed in her house even though it had running water from an electric well. She grew up in the early 20th century, and just thought the idea of pooping in your house was gross. "That's something you do outside." I'm sure plenty of people who use water think toilet paper is gross. I guess this is just to say that toilets aren't a sign of wealth. Well-maintained roads, though, are a reasonable proxy for national wealth. And yes, plenty of states in the US have bad main roads.
