Really good article on the discourse and aftermath of the slap. Like this whole thread needs to read it I think.

I grew up listening to Chris Rock make edgy jokes, and more recently he's become one of those aging comedians who whines constantly about people not approving of his edgy jokes anymore, so there was a certain amount of...I dunno, schadenfreude or whatever to seeing him get slapped for making a dumb, edgy joke.

There. That's my contribution to the hot take industry.

I'd normally roll my eyes at hollywood actors opinions on things but I guess its fair they get one on this.

Having said that I think jim carrey is being weird about it. I think probably bruce willis has it about right, when asked he shrugged and said as far as he's concerned its forgotten already.

Weird side note, I was watching the Amazon show Upload last night about a dystopian future and Will Smith was used as new slang for cuck.

But also I feel like Carrey was pretty right. It came from some unwell place in Will's head. He's battling a lot of poo poo. And the ovation from the crowd was indeed pretty gross. I think it's just an extension of how much Carrey hates the Hollywood machine.

I've seen a fair few takes pathologizing Smith as mentally ill. The odd thing about the situation to me is that in a certain sense getting out your seat smacking someone famous on live television in front of millions is completely insane, but in another sense when you're one of the most famous actors in the world its something you can do and get away with, morality aside.

Smith didnt even get removed from the room. So in another sense its not 'insane', he did it and worse case scenario he'll lose a few of his millions and some potential roles.

I think a lot of the visceral response people have to smiths actions are on some level a recognition of how completely bizarre the power dynamics are that someone can do that.

I read the referenced article about the John Boyega controversy, which I had no idea about and it's wild. He made a crass, but harmless joke about his star wars character getting with the lead in the end to the ire of a bunch of unhinged social media stans who strongly preferred another pairing and proceeded to make extremely weird personal 'Will Smith Slap-esque' attacks against him. But the funniest twist is Boyega not backing down at all and instead taking the high ground by clapping back via sticking to the text of the star wars films to show how delusional they are.

Lol. It reminds me of when Eric Idle was asked about voicing a character on a Disney ride he did 20 years ago and forgetting about it. The Disney Stan's started harassing him on Twitter about it and he eventually went "Look you idiots, I was in a sound booth reading a script, do you really think there was a loving dragon in there with me?"

Yeah I am not in the traumatized crowd and everyone trying to co-opt it is dumb.

I do think it was a really gross moment though. He wasn't standing next to Rock and reacted. He got up and walked a good distance over there. And then screamed like an idiot from his seats. He's got issues.

And clapping during his speech would be fine. He did win the Oscar. But getting roused to an ovation with his speech was definitely an example of class solidarity more than anything else. He should have been removed. The fact that he refused is also telling.

I don't think he should be ostracized or have his Oscar stripped or any of that dumb crap though.

I don't believe it was staged, but they only benefited from it, so there will be more antics in the future. Not enough to make the Oscars worth watching, though.

We have decided to decline your offer of a butt kicking.
I'm not so sure this is a win for the Oscars. It's true to a certain extent that any publicity can be good publicity, but the Oscars is in large part about prestige. It's about burnishing the reputation of Hollywood and showing the world how high status the movie making business is. Scandal gets clicks and maybe the academy will play it off, but something as trashy as a guy hitting another guy for dissing his girl is not good for the Oscars image.

I feel like being the people at the show who are asked to make jokes about celebrities who had to go back out there after a dude who they both referred to as their friend got slapped on stage for telling jokes are allowed to feel that way. I think the whole thing is stupid and there is not much to say about it, but being critical of Sykes and Schumer for explaining how they feel is also silly.

I seem to recall that the Pinkett-Smiths were once assaulted, maybe even held at gunpoint, by some sleazy paparazzi? This would have been 1996-97, when they were dating, and I guess it was their plan to be the ones who broke the news with "proof" that they were a couple.
