There will be edits condensing down the nonsense into a digestible 90 minutes. It may be okay then. However as it is, we have hack producers not understanding that because of their insistence of being serialized they can’t move on to next episode ever.

Haven't seen the latest episode yet, but I just thought about the scene where Guinan implies that Picard can afford to be optimistic about the future because of his white privilege, while a white homeless man stands 10 feet away from her. Maybe it's for the best that almost nothing happens in this show.

Season 1 detoured and swerved wildly all over the place, but I never once felt it was dragging like this. It’s such a weird trade off, worse pacing for basically better… everything else. I guess I can live with it, but still, we’re half way done and barely anything has happened.

The NX-01 engineering set seemed like it was something just outside the reach of the plausible, like a lot of the Earth Starfleet visual language did, at least at the start of the show. I love how the Enterprise warp core was laid horizontal like the implied TOS warp core and the TMP-era one and looked like a giant ship boiler that ran on space magic bullshit instead of steam and that like half of Connor Trineer's scenes on the show were him just jungle gym'ing his way over, under or around it and trying not to crash into the camera. I'd say I'd want to see a modern Trek take on the ENT sets, but I'm kind of terrified they'd gently caress them up.

There was a lot of thought in that that they could do more if a modern trek did a take on them. From Drex:

quote:

On the “blue sky” list – If we had the money, we would have replaced the back wall with greenscreen, and everyshot would have been a CG set extension. The core would be twice as long, and feeding a TOS inspired cathedral manifold.

...

If you look at the aft section of the NX saucer, you will see an exterior deck known as the Engineering Staging Platform. From here, engineering crews could work on the warp engines, and operate the space station style robot arm. What isn’t so obvious is that if you slide those bulk heads back, port and starboard, you could pull the entire engine room out, and slide in a new one. The idea being that a new more advanced engineering module was being built back on Earth, while the NX is “seeing what’s out there”.

Honestly there were a lot of really cool details in the NX-01 that the designers created which writers could've used but never did.

I am no Trek expert and I have never seen Enterprise and have no idea how the timeline works but
they're setting up Khan right? Like that's what this has to be? The Eugenics Wars clearly never happened in this version of the Trek timeline and there's always been a vague connection between the Soong family and those events. The original is peak Trek, very literally the highest point of the franchise, and something they've been trying to revisit but hosed up terribly in their last attempt, so why not take another swing at it?

Every other aspect of this season of Picard is just revisiting better Trek, so why the gently caress not that? Even this episode is clearly wanting to be Trials and Tribble-ations but because it's Picard they're doing it very, very poorly.

Why don't you perform zazen, facing a wall?
Traditionally Khan is a Noonien Singh, not a Noonien Soong. He’s not supposed to be related to the Data making guy, they just have similar names for Roddenberry reasons. But tbh who cares nowadays, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they retroactively merged them. But I would be kind of surprised if they end this show with our heroes causing eugenics wars to fix the timeline, that would be wild.

The impression I got from Soong's hearing was that the Eugenics Wars already happened and that's why his funding was getting pulled via whatever treaty or accord they mentioned. But that could be totally off, since as Picard said later, records from this century are "chaos", so a lot of the details between major landmark events are fuzzy.

That's also the only way WW3 supposedly lasting decades (according to Memory Alpha, anyway) makes any sense to me: post-war United Earth and Federation historians trying to piece together lovely records from 20-30 years of vaguely related conflicts and rolling them all together. It's hard to imagine a world war fought by conventional means lasting that long before someone gets jumpy enough to launch the nukes, but maybe I've just had my brain poisoned by Fallout games and clancychat

It's a bad take on the Borg because it undermines their whole premise and what made them menacing in the first place.

Picard is obviously not the first show to do that but even with the Borg Queen you at least always had the chance to argue that she was just ACTING like a "human"/individual being in order to accomplish whatever the collective wanted.
The whole Agnes/Borg Queen plot is now even driving further from that away. The Borg Queen is now genuinely acting like an individual that WANTS a personal(!) connection with Agnes and actually cares about her as an individual.
Also notice that the police officer was only there to serve as a body for the Borg Queen and not to start a new collective because the writers clearly want to individualize the Borg Queen further instead of focussing on the actual collective while they now pretend the collective is some sort of "mind melding".

I do like the actress and the overall performance of the Borg queen but I don't like where they are going with this and it's just further proof that the writers don't know what to do with the Borg because it is obviously a challenge due to the fact that they can't be written like your average human-like species.
It's also obvious where they are going with all of this: The Agnes/Borg Queen combo is going to lead to the "benign" Borg and in principle I wouldn't even mind such a plotline (it's been obvious since some time that its the only direction the Borg have left to go) but I don't like how we seem to get there.
