The lighting bit is the one thing that I don't like. I've never even watched TOS, so I don't really give a poo poo about the exact details but come on, show us a vision of the future where people can still afford friggin' lightbulbs. We get it, your show is moody and edgy and dark, but at least give us a bridge where people aren't gonna trip over poo poo cause they can't see. The medbay in that trailer is beautiful, just make the bridge like that, too, and I'm happy.

Compare this:

To this:

That second shot looks like they're in a nightclub, come on.

Those two shots are from Discovery, which had a very... distinct visual tone in seasons 1 and 2. (You can tell by the tall collar on the uniform, which is gone in the new footage.) In the new trailers, everything is a lot more brightly lit and colorful than before, especially in the close-up shots:

(Incidentally, Uhura's console is covered in rainbow gumdrops next to the touchscreens, which is a nice bridge between the TOS aesthetic and modern expectations of the future.)

The bridge's floor is still polished black, as is the lounge we've seen a few shots of, but other rooms use different colored (and sometimes even not shiny) floors:

I've been really impressed by the visuals we're seeing in the trailers. The way everything is presented really sells the idea that this is a much different show from Discovery.

I think both those second shots are more visually interesting than flat lighting TOS

they look like videogame cutscenes to me rather than spaces people work in or inhabit long term. there's a way to make things visually interesting, while also being feasibly workable furniture or space for the work being done in it, and more importantly, the scenes and character interactions that happen there. We're at a point flashy CG is so common you kind of tune out all the period-cg greeble in the background, characters might as well be on green screen with some random scifi background thrown in. It would stick out immediately to see a classic TNG set in nuTrek at this point they've gone so far from having any established aesthetic beyond bold colour uniforms and the saucer ships.

visual interest is also not that important to good trek scifi soap opera-ing which is more about what is happening and why rather than "ooh something to ogle at." Most of the best trek eps work just as well as radioplays in the background.

"more visually interesting" in a screenshot is also different from it being in motion. plenty of disco shots that would be better if the camera weren't constantly on a merry-go-round

it's kind of cool, reminds me of the expansion pack for n64 in a way. I like the idea of an attachable gunship sorta deal, better than detachable saucer they never did anything with. unless it detaches to attach to the defiant? hmm

It was horrifically terrible, and not even in an amusing way. Its terribleness was so overwhelming that it wasn't even possible to follow the story on account of being unable to think about anything except how awful it was. Truly unwatchable.

One of those background ships seems to be a Galaxy-class with a Nebula-class pod strapped to the top. Dude's just carrying on the classic Trek tradition of kitbashing I guess, just with 3D models instead of AMT's.

Although that one scene when the guy puts his eye drops in to watch an enemy vessel explode is a really good scene.

I sure hope they lean into / remember that SNW is supposed to take place BEFORE TOS.. that means maintaining Warp 8 for too long will break up the ship, there's a lot of those older J-class ships around (the ones with the sphere for the primary hull), and there's no Organian treaty, and selling Orion slave women is a semi-respectable way to earn a living.

In other words it's a lot more like Space Frontier and the Feds are still in the middle of growing pains.. space is still more like how it was for the dilithium miners in Mudd's Women..

So two big things come to my mind..

1) Do we get TOS style crabless Lawrence of Arabia Klingons or a mix of Michael Ansara and lobster heads?

2) it doesn't look like it but I want those big rear end artillery shells with pistol grip phasers, the ones where turning up the power level sounds like cracking a safe, not these tiny shits that look like two handed lipstick cases.

We're supposed to get everything tougher than it was in TOS already..

Like people on the bridge just bumping into each other because they're trying to look away from the handrails. Walking onto the turbolift and rubbing their eyes waiting for the rings burned into their retinas to disappear.
