Tangentially related: There's a show called Homestead Rescue, where an Off-The-Grid "expert" goes to people's Ruby Ridge style compounds and fixes their water lines and gardens etc. One episode they go out to the Mojave desert where some dipshit ex marine built a metal shack for him, his wife, and their three dogs. There's no power, no running water, and it's out in wolf/coyote territory. The dogs got eaten within weeks. The wife looked full on dead inside and just explained her situation as "I gotta support my husband". The marine husband acted completely baffled that he couldn't handle things and his wife looks frankly suicidal. Anyways the host gave them new plumbing and just seemingly ditched this poor woman out in the desert with her obviously unhinged husband and treated it like a victory.

Forget bears, he's going to loving freeze to death on the first night. Starvation too, since I see roughly half a meal's worth of food, but that takes longer to die from.

I just watched a presentation by a person planning to hike from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail ~2,650 miles, ~4,250 km, four month plan But they actually have resupply points figured out in advance, and while they certainly haven't hiked that far in one go before, they have done 20 miles in a day before and understand that running out of water is a real risk.
