I want to play Edith Finch but I dunno if I can handle the bit with the "eating animals in first person" stuff.

I'm sensitive to animal death in games. :ohdear:

Wow, I messed up enough that Blair Witch wouldn't even start, but then after reinstalling while still keeping the same dglvoodoo settings it just works great, runs butter smooth and no issues with the menus taking ages like in Nocturne.
Playing this as a fan of Nocturne, how much will I miss for not knowing anything about the Blair Witch?

I was wondering this myself! It definitely creeped the poo poo out of me first time I played Dear Esther....there's actually a few "ghosts" throughout the game.

I'd actually recommend watching the first movie first. It isn't long and it is, imo, still an interesting watch to this day. The last 15 minutes are especially memorable.

The human animal is a beautiful and terrible creature, capable of limitless compassion and unfathomable cruelty.
There was a woman named Elly Kedward who lived in the area of what would become Burkittsvile, MD during colonial times and who was exiled to the woods for being a witch. She seems to have killed some people who went into the woods (there's mention of several men found murdered and arranged as if for a ritual on a large rock), but then there was no activity until a man who lived alone in the woods, Rustin Parr, killed several children in his basement, allegedly at the urging of a cloaked woman, in 1940. In 1994, three film students disappeared in the woods, and their footage suggests they found (and at least one of them died in) the ruins of Parr's home.

That's pretty much The Lore. It's not deep.

Thanks, I'll see if I can dig up a copy of the movie to watch during the weekend or something, even if it isn't strictly necessary for the game.

It makes The Woods a little more impactful I think, and what you find there.

Things could be going better

I mostly remember Dear Esther because in one of the early sections there is a chemical diagram of an ester on a wall and I bet a developer thought he was so clever for that

Also Blair Witch is one of those movies where I really prefer the largely questionable theory that the witch wasn't real and the boys just teamed up to murder Heather not because it is a solid theory so much as it is just more spooky.

See I love the spookyness of a hateful old witches curse. The implications of the tapes being found in Parr's foundation under decades of poo poo is such a chilling thing. but yeah the movie ended up being designed so that whatever you find most terrifying, there's just as much evidence for it as anything else.

The limited comic series was really freaking good too. It never answered anything, just showed the reach and capability of whatever it was. I honestly don't know how I feel about the books and retro games flat out telling you.

The games more or less cover the basic backstory of the first movie anyway, just adds tie ins to Nocturne i.e. the first game covers Rustin Parr and his killings, the second covers Coffin Rock during the civil war and the third goes back to just after the witch was exiled and puts their own spin on the events. The first 10 minutes of the first movie talks about these events and then the rest of the movie is about teenagers getting lost in the woods and spooky things happen to them as they go hysterical.

It holds up pretty well for a found footage movie from 99. I watched it this past October for the first time in probably a decade plus and was surprised how good it was.

No indie horror title has stuck with me like Water Womb World so you can imagine my delight when developer Yames announced his new little horror project, Growing My Grandpa.

For anyone who has played a grandpa growing simulator before, you should know the drill - a point-and-click adventure where you have to nourish both grandpa's body and mind through feeding him his favourite food and teaching him new phrases to mutter through that fleshy hole that resembles a mouth. Play your cards right, and you might just be lucky enough to hold a full conversation - just like the old days!

You can pay and play for the full thing on itch.io - the whole experience lasts about an hour with two endings to discover.

Yames' games aren't really 'fun' in the traditional sense but have an atmosphere and writing style like nothing else I've really seen out there. If you can get yourself through the admittedly annoying 'cleaning up' gameplay loop, there's a dark and thought-provoking adventure to be had.

Been playing through Michigan: Report from Hell with some friends and it's the funniest poo poo we've ever played. Brisco is a hero. As a bonus, we're not using the ideal settings on the emulator so things slow down quite often, resulting in people's voices being drawwwwn ouuuuut just a little bit, making everyone sound just a little bit baked.

The worst is when there is no reason for it to be there, not even the slightest reason given for why your character is walking around looking through a camcorder.

Also, been catching up on various vids CJUGames has been uploading and it's kind of amazing how he keeps finding indie horror titles that partway in go "bam you're in a Backrooms game now motherfucker." As lazu as that trend can be, it is definitely appropriate that he keeps getting tricked into playing Backrooms games. He can't escape the Backrooms.

The ending is a bait and switch where you do all the steps needed to win, you know exactly what is going to happen but then you lose in a cutscene anyway

Its worth playing though regardless because the story has literally zero impact on the actual game
